Indepen DANCE Festival 2005 Review
Man, it was great last night... PVD was amazing... I really wish they would let these things go on till a lil later...
Mauro Picotto was banging, as usual.
I went there for PVD and it paid off. Unlike other older DJ's he's still into his sets. I really wish they would let him and Mauro play longer so they can really build up their sets... Great night after all....
The opening DJ was alright. He played that one annoying 80's song twice, for some reason.
Eric Morillo fucking SUCKED. I actually love house music, but his style is just plain shit. There wasn't even one song I enjoyed by him. I guess I shouldn't say he sucked. Everyone has different taste. But his style is defenitely not my taste. He turned down the music 3-4 times, just to hear the crowd cheering. That is such a petpeeve of mine!
Mauro Picotto ROCKED, as usual! His set felt like it went by in literally 10 minutes! Before his set, I told him to make sure and play really really really HARD, and that's what he did!!!
He honestly wasn't at his best though. With a 1.5 hour set, he didn't really have time to build up his set like he normally does. He prefers to spin 3+ hours (I wish I could exprience a set THAT long by him). In massive events like this where u play such a short time, the only choice u have is to play bangers to please the crowd and make everyone jump and dance. He played the good old favorites, including:
Pulsar (some remix that sounded like Verdi).
Coldfunk (his remix of Clocks)
Tao Tek (one of my faves)
Dark Room (one of my other faves)
New Time New Place
Funky Time (that new song he made with Fergie)
some electro type of song that made everyone dance, (forget what it's called)
and a few other sick tunes, including that sick, twisted intro!!
Mauro was also extremely exhausted from his gigs he had on both thurs & fri night, but he still did what he could to please everyone! He gave me his new cd, which I've heard already, but I still took it from him. hehe
He had so many DJ Groupie girls trying to talk to him and take pics with him. It was hilarious. Some bimbo even thought he was PVD!!!
Edgar V was cool, for the 30 minutes I saw of him. Especially that first song he played, it was beautiful. I know I've heard it somewhere before.... Someone told me he never plays more than 30 mins, and only opens for PVD? WTF? lol
I went to go say bye to Mauro, and thats when PVD came on, and it was cheesey right away (in my opinion of course). Again, I shouldn't say anything mean, cuz everyone has different taste. But, I left to go to Spundae afterwards to catch the last hour of Larson & Jethro's set!
w00t! I had a blast!
I was right in front of the dj booth and was getting raped by the ppl around me including a couple of girls that were bumping my ass and a guy that was RIGHT behind me almost rubbing on me while i was dancing!!!
but i myself was technically rubbing the fence
so it was a great night put aside the random ppl though.
I didn't like Dave Armstrong in his pink polo so i didn't want to dance to his haus stuff but Steve Angello was rocking the floor, and i think he played Say Hello, which i expected PvD to play, which he did not. Erick Morillo really got me jammin about with a bunch of remixes of old ass tunes and Mauro Picotto got the crowd pumping with his mindless tunes. Edgar V opened with Without You Near which i sang my heart out to and Paul van Dyk was the greatest with all his Pvd Reworks and SICK ASS BASS on the feckin' speakers that got my body shaking!!!! w00000000000000t! it was a great night of edm for me and i'm glad that i went
"thissss issss the timmmmmeeeeeeeeeee of ourrrrr liveeesssssssssss"
WOW!!! What a night. I think I enjoyed ECD a little bit more but over all I had such a Great time last night!!! It was Great meeting some new TA's!!!

Anywho's here is my review.
Kris, DjFadded and I got in a little after 9. We had to make a trip back to the car due to the no Cam. Rule
(LAME!) Once we where in we Ran in to Evan and his Friend. Steve Angello was on. Ehhh... I was really not feeling him. His mixing was poor and he played with the effects to much imo. I don't think I was the only one thinking this since people around me had the
look on there face. He played a remix of "Sweet Dreams" and I heard that comming in to the evnet.
After Steve it was Erick Morillo
I was really impressed by his set. He had a mix of house, latiny house and a little techno thrown in. He got me dancing.
Then Mauro came on. This was the first time I have ever seen him live. When he first started I wanted him to drop some beats imo. But he Bulit up his set. I enjoyed it untill he played that remix of "Clocks"
Why Maurio why??? That Track needs to DIE! When that track was on I was yelling NOOOOOOO! But the crowd Loved it! And I guess that all that matters. I would totlay see him again!!! I think I need to see a longer set to really get to see what he can do.
Egar V came on and Drop "With Out you Near"
I went NUTZO!! When I heard it. I wish Egar V had a longer set though. A half hour dosn't do him Justic.
PVD Came on His first 3 tracks where amazing!!! The 3rd one ( it kinda sounded like a U2 remix) blew my mind!! Then something happend. He lost me. He went into his German Trance Mode. But then he got me again by playing Someday
After that PVD was simply amazing. His ancore with "Time of Your Lifes" "Nothing But you" and "For an Angel" HFS!!!!
My Big issue was all the pushing, grouping, Penis against my ass, grabbing... was a buzz kill. I think Kris heard every line in the book last night. We had an awesome spot twords the front... But it just got too crazy with all the pushing so we moved to the right side.
The TA meet-up was kind of a Bust.. But I still met some new TA's!!! The Quiz- typeing your name on your phone was key
hehe. It was kinda hard to hear what people where saying.(opps)Everyone I met was so NICE!!
I think our group of people are one of the best around!!! *HUG*
I took a lot of pictures
I had to seek my Cam. in last night but it worked
I have ways.
Michelle- You where missed last night!

Fucking awesome night! We got in at about 9 and met up with all of our other friends. I had no internet access the past 2 days so I didn't know where to meet up with all the TA's. It was about 10ish when I ran into Tigo and got to say what up (as he was smokin a J lol). I was looking for you CLOVIS ALL NIGHT and didn't stumble across you and I didn't run into Michelle and Neinerlove until the end of the event..it was nice to meet you neinerlove and I haven't seen Michelle in a long time.
About the night - I don't know if I liked the single stage more or less than multiple stages. I liked EDC last weekend because I could hop from room to room but this was still a kickass night! It was my first time seeing Mauro and he rocked it for me, totally my style of music and vibe. Angello blew my balls, Morillo had a few tracks that I liked but Mauro and PVD really made me happy. PVD's set was awesome and I don't know of a better way to close out the night other than the 3 tracks that he finished with...oldies but goodies! Michelle, German trance mode? I love his German trance mode if that's what you call it..blows me away.
Wish I could've met up with more of you guys but just couldn't find you.

wow, after hearing this i'm almost glad i didn't go...i'm sick of nothing but you and time of our lives...and he played "for an angel (marc van linden remix) at monster massive last year...i was thinking that he would be playing something more in the line of stuff that he would be playing on "politics of dancing 2"...
ah well...i'm sure PVD's show at the mayan will be loads better...and i know for sure that regardless of how good mauro was last night, the next he comes back to LA will be even better.....
I find it the guy 2 entries above talks about house music in his signature but then says angello and morillo sucked. Ah well the house djs threw it down last night I thought, especially Morillo who had so much energy. I really have not been a fan of Van Dyk's live sets since '03 when his Reflections material was still new and not hammered to death. Picotto was good I'm sure but since I am not a techno fan I can't really review him properly. I just felt Morillo tried the hardest to get the crowd psyched and had the best and funkiest tracks. This being my first rave in a couple years makes me appreciate Avalon and Giant productions that much more where proper speakers, awesome house line-ups, and an abscence of drugs make the night much more enjoyable for me personally. Can't wait till Monster Massive w/ Deep Dish, Olav Basoski, and others, a sick house line-up.

Was going to come to this but waiting to damn long to book my flight...oh well. Im suprized Morillo got a few bad reviews.....he always rocks it out in NYC.....leaving everybody pleased.

| Originally posted by zealot I said Angello blew, not Morillo. Morillo definately had the best house set of the night and had me dancing harder than any of the other house talent. About MM, how could you forget to mention Antoine Clamaran as part of the sick ass house that will be there!? Antoine fuckin owns. I enjoyed PVD's music as he spun a few epic tracks from his Jahre Maximal set a few months back. |
Last night was just simply amazing. I had a blast meeting up with many close friends. I also met up with a friend that came from BELFAST, IRELAND, and I was hanging out with some friends that came from MEXICO. WOW... It was nice meeting many TA's, sorry if I forget your names. But here are the many TA's I met up with... Sweetcandy Girl, Miss Julia, TSG, RavinChunLi, jennavive00, Photobot, Noree, Ninerlove (Thanks
), DJ Faded, The Quiz, Clovis, RedLunatik, Electrophile, Desiree-Lyn, and I know there's more!!!!
REVIEW...
I got there 2 songs before Morillo went on. I must say Morillo rocked! He played many classic songs including... Pump Up The Jam by Dons feat. Technotronic, Give It Up, Hoes In This House, Plastic Dreams... Wow, he took it back to High School in the 90's... Morillo had me dancing...
MAURO PICOTTO...
Wow!!!! What an awesome set... Like Julia said before, it wasn't his best, but it was really good. His first half was Picotto's old style. Those that didn't see him last night, you guys missed out since he don't play like that anymore. Many classic Picotto tracks. Then, he kicked it up a notch when he dropped New Time New Place, and went on to bang all the new hard techno. WOOHOO... What a perfect transition, the song makes perfect sence because he went from old, to NEW... just like the song says... And OMFG!!!! The crowd went nuts with his hard banging techno. And, LA experienced something that he rarely does... he played his own UNRELEASED track DARK ROOM... That track has never been released, and when Chris from Belfast, Julia, and I heard it... OMFG, we went nuts. That's our song, Mauro played it for us last time at Avalon, and again in Miami!!!! The crowd was going off to it too. I think that was the song that got the biggest reaction from the crowd. I was dancing non stop. I even saw Mauro dance on stage while DJing to this song. He was jumping up and down with a big smile on his face. That's something I have never seen him do. It looked like he was really enjoying his set. And off course, he did his trademark weird faces and hand moves. And did he get new headphones? It looked like he had new white Meganite headphones! Awesome!!!!
EDGAR V...
Not a big fan of Edgar. He was playing alot like Markus. Oh well... Sowwwy...
PVD...
WOOHOOO...
Seeing two of my Top 3 DJ's in one night, almost back to back is simply amazing! MAURO and PVD are my two favorite DJs in the world and Sasha is my 3rd. PVD had me dancing non stop. I screamed so much during his set that I lost my voice!!!!! NOOOOOOOOOO... By this time I was already hanging out with Desiree and her cuzin Julia... Awesome girls, fun times with them always. But wow, I'm speechless. I loved every minute of PVD and Mauro... If only Sasha would've been there, then my night would've been even better.

all i have to say is PVD IS BACK!!
holy shit!! THAT was the PVD i remember! anyway had a blast! the VIP was awesome....too awesome to leave. lol sorry i didn't see anyone but uhm. maybe next time

oh my god... Independance Festival 2005 was just amazing... didnt get there in time to hear Swedish Egil, although i wanted to cause ive never heard his sets before.... got there at the end of dave armstrong's set...pretty disappointing so far...nothing that got me pumped up. Steve Angello...BOOOOOO!!!!! get off the stage!!!. Erick Morillo, he didnt start off too strong but his songs and his energy as a dj got me dancin for sure...definitely one of th ebetter dj's that night. Pimped out Mauro Picotto with the cigarette in his hand rocked the fuckin Coliseum. His intro lasted about hmmm....an hour or so...but WHATEVER IT WAS SICK!!! i loved the energy in the sets...each song built onto the next. When Edgar V came on I was just fuckin amazed with that first track...I seriously wanna find out the tracklist. I think it was his last song that he played that really got me movin! MUST FIND OUT TRACKLIST! ...
and then...the Master of them all...PVD!!!!
literally lost for words all i can say is great intro track, YELLOWBLACKBOARD - SUPERFLY was fucking amazing...great tracks ive never heard of before i seriously need the cuesheet for this one...and great encore...
for the people pissin on him that he played shit from his reflections album...IT WAS A FUCKIN ENCORE...hes gonna play shit by him...
got his autograph too!! so overall it was an awesome night!!!
p.s.
hey and if anyone went there and saw a skinny black guy with sunglasses and some fucked up tied back hair...yea that was me! dancin my ass off!

dude. was swedish egil the dude with the pink shirt? hahaha all I could concentrate on was his shirt.
personally. I thought angello was pretty good. better than morillo probably. but that's just me.
mauro was freaking crazy! I never knew he was that good. I loooved his set. tahhhhhhhhhhh!! does anyone know what his opening song was? I want it.
too bad I had to leave half an hour early. damnittttttt. friends were too tired. I missed out
haha I ran into electrophile towards the end of the night. as promised. he was wearing his skeleton shirt. nice. oh and sweetcandygirl it was nice meeting you! sorry for randomly coming up to you and saying hi out of nowhere loll. I recognized you from club heaven
haha
The first dj, trainwrecked every mix!!!
How can you trainwreck every mix with CDJs????
sounded like the kentucky derby!
Overall an amazing night!
My highlight::: Hanging out with DJ Diamond in the VIP area!!!

his mixing was ridiculous and his set was great. Towards the end he slowed it down abit and that was really nice...brought me back to earth cause I was somewhere else during the beggining.
My fav DJ's (by far) were Mauro Picotto and PVD! Got there in the middle of Dave Armstrong's set, was o.k. Steve Angelo played some good tracks, but went into Eurythmics "Sweet Dreams" mode twice during the night (the max set time was 90 minutes, is it really necessary to play the same song twice????)
Morillo's really not my style, but gave me a break to get some drinks and wait 20 minutes for the bathroom. I went there for that GERMAN TRANCE SOUND, after all!!!!!!!!!!!!
Mauro was off the hook...was so funny how he made those weird faces with his arms up in the air, like "wtf, why are you all looking at me for, I'm just the DJ but I'll go along with it all and pretend like I"m somebody important!"
PVD really shook the house (hmmm...no ceiling, o.k. he shook the floor)! The crowd was so into him, very difficult to get up to the front though I did, just takes patience.
I could see that he really loved this night, and when the crowd shouted "Paul van Dyk" over and over two different times before his set ended, I saw him smile appreciatively.
imo, the headlining DJ should have been given a 3 hour set though. Drop some of the others, whatever it takes, but this world famous top 5 DJ flew in from Germany and deserved a 3 hour set!
Most annoying thing was the cam rule. "No digital cameras allowed" per the website, but when I got there I saw at least 50 of them!!! Anyone posted pics yet?
Best part was the people. A little too close for my comfort at the front, but a polite group imo and paid proper respect to the DJ's like they deserved! I'm sure that every one of those DJ's will want to come back to LA soon after an event good as Independance!
