Tipping in the club

How do you tip in the club? The bartenders? Always? The people handing you paper napkins near the restrooms? How much?

Posted by vtec junkie on Jul-03-2005 17:46:

$1 per drink at the bar is standard so if I order one drink I tip $1, if I order two drinks I tip $2. I hardly ever take paper towls in the bathroom but If the bathroom attendent is cool ill tip him $5 sometime durring the night and jack all his chewing gum.

Posted by kadomony on Jul-03-2005 17:48:

Bartenders: usually about $3 for beer, $4-$5 for a mixed drink.
Bathroom people: about $2-$3

of course, I usually tip a dollar or two more when I'm drunk :P

-edit-

if the bar is INSANELY packed, I might tip a straight $10 or $20.
usually guarantees you to be served first

Why don't you just crawl under the bar and give the bartender a blow job? For real, unless your making 6 figures those tips are not necessary.

Oh yeah - When I first read this thread, I thought I said "Tripping at the club"

dont come to my bar!!

no seriously, bartenders make like $2/hr and tips is how we make a living. just like in a restaurant the standard is NOT a dollar, its at least 15%. i cant complain though... where i work, gratuity is included, so even when people try to be cheap and not tip at all, they really are tipping me 17%

Exactlly why a $1 is ENOUGH!!! Congrads....now everybody knows your little secret.

Oh and last time I came to your bar.....I drank for free.

Posted by matt167698 on Jul-03-2005 18:21:

$1-$2/drink if theyre cool but if theyre an asshole in anyway i give em nothing. if theres one thing i cant stand its giving a guy $1 to open a twist top who's got an attitude to boot

its funny how in europe the bartenders are usually chill and you dont tip them anything at all. here they make $200+ a night and theyre gonna be pissed off???

its not that im cheap but when ur in the service industry you have to be courteous, i was a waiter at college for 4 years so if anything im a good tipper at restaurants for good service. But dont be obnoxious when im ordering an $8 bud light...

I'm a big tipper wherever I go. Restaurants, bars, etc. I even tip the guy pumping my gas if it's cold or rainy. But, at bars and clubs, I usually just round up to the nearest 5. If the order is 7, I give 10. If it's 11, I'll give 15. Etc.

If you only make $2/hr you're severely underpaid. The median and means salaries of bartenders in 2004 were $7.42 and $8.29, respectively.

Ah, so the gum is free. I thought they were selling the stuff. Good thing I started this thread.

I liked reading this, as it means that I can punish assholes without necessarily being a cheap European (I believe you should adapt to the customs of the places you stay).

Oh yeah, I myself stick to the $1 per drink rule, and $1 to the bathroom guys - unless they're being pricks. Outside the club I'm pretty generous, generally tipping 25% and more in cabs, restaurants and at the hair dressers. But these people also tend to be much more nice to me than nightclub staff. Actually, only bouncers and DJs have yet to piss me off in a club, and these are the only ones that you're not supposed to tip. Strange.

I almost always drink beer when I'm out and I usually tip $1-$2 per drink. If I'm buying two drinks maybe I'll tip $5. Clubs rip people off with drink prices....I couldn't even fathom giving a bartender an extra $5 on top of paying 11-12 bucks for a drink.

if its alcohol dollar or two each drink, if its water..no tip lol and when im fucked up i tip the guy in the bathroom 5 bux for unlimited fillups of water haha

Posted by trunks1022 on Jul-03-2005 23:22:

philly food service = oxymoron

Posted by verndogs on Jul-03-2005 23:31:

at a club:
$1 per drink ($0 if the bartender is a jackass, $2 if the bartender is really nice)
$1 for the bathroom guy
$1 for the coat check per item checked

at a restaurant:
15% standard if the waitstaff is averagp
16-25% if the wait staff really goes out of their way to serve you (give a good description of what is on the menu, always fills your cup of water without you having to ask them, etc.)
10% if they forget to get you something
pennies-5% if the wait staff is rude, not polite

cab drivers:
15% standard
more if I get into a good conversation with the taxi driver
more if the taxi driver goes through red lights and speeds for you

for me it depends on on a couple things:

a. If its a regular bartender i go to.
b. If its a random bartender
c. If I open a tab
d. If I get separate drinks.
e. Depends how much effort is required to serve the drink.

I have a particular bartender at FUR that I go to everytime and tip her nicely. She always calls me by my name (before I hand her my credit card), tries to get to me as soon as possible, always hooks me up with lower prices and never tries to pull a fast one on me by loading my cup full of ice.

On an average night, if my tab was $60, I would normally tip her around $20-$30 depending how my funds are doing.

With a bartender I dont know with decent service, i tip $2-3 for mixed drink and ALWAYS $1 for beer since all is required is popping the cap off. I dont tip for water because the price of water is usually jacked and all they gotta do is yank one from the cooler. But yea, if you want faster service next time, tip nicely.

and that is the key right there.

Oh man you said it best... why, why is it that a huge portion of people that work in NYC clubs have the worst attitudes... I'm a fuckin customer I expect to be treated that way.

I give 'em a dollar period, most of the time those assholes try to over charge you for drinks anyways. Last time Johan was Avalon I drank Goose & Cranberry all night.. aaaaall night lol and it was $10 a drink. The drunker you get they start tellin you 12... 13... fuck that shit.

I understand they work on tips, and if I have a good bartender, I'll usually hit em off with a few extra bux when I'm done drinking, I'm not gonna tip them big in the beginning so they'll be nice to me, if they're nice I'll hit 'em off with extra at the end. You gotta figure, if everyone tips a dollar, these guys/gals are serving a few hundred drinks a night... they do well for themselves.

Now I don't want to be an asshole, but have you been living in a cave in some mountain in Kurdistan for the last 8 years?
Your next thread should be called " How do I get on an elevator?"

Ok, youre comparing a restaurant to a bar. At a bar, its $1 a drink and that is the standard. But when I sit down to eat (alone), the way I tip it usually comes out to about 25-30%... with a group its like 20%.

1 dolla per drink
