Short or Long mixes?

I know long mixes are sometimes a sign of skill, but I've found that short, altho very fluid mixes work just as well, if not better!

What do you guys think?

The longer the mix, the more concentration it demands on your behalf(not to forget beat matching skills). The length of a mix is the first thing I look at to assess the skills of a dj( next to the fact that it isn't trainwrecking or that the dj is putting his eq's to good use).

I think it definitely depends on what type of music you are playing. More uplifting epic trance calls for shorter mixes since the song picks up suddenly and if you had it going for a while there would be too much going on.

The progressive sound is perfect for much longer mixes since progressive builds and builds suddenly, giving you the opportunity to compose a sweet ass looooooooong mix.

but, with the right tracks, a short mix can sound awesome.

i personally would rather hear a shorter mix with the right songs then a long mix with bullshit songs....but if its a long mix with good songs

IMHO
deep/prog -- loooong mixes are rather enjoyable to do
cheese -- short and fast -- get that shit done with!

overall, yea, long mixes do take bit more skill than short mixes, due to syncing the tracks

I enjoy creating long mixes. When the second or third measure of the next song kicks in and it's all in perfect synch, I get a mental rush.

I think that both types of mixes require extreme skill to do perfectly, and that both can be just as successful in creating the perfect mix.

With short mixes you have to be very good at being able to adjust your gain, 3 band EQ , and volume very quickly to achive a good mix.(Hard to do if your mix only lasts say 15 sec. or so). You kind of have to "get in out" in such a short period of time that you leave a lot of room for error in there. Just look at how George Acosta and The Forth do it. Now those guys are the masters of short mixes.

To perfect long mixes you have to be able to master matching beats perfectly (something i have yet to do ). Where as EQ and gain require less attention during these long mixes because you have more time to adjust. Take a look at how Sasha or Sander Kleinenberg spins and then you will see the perfect looooooong mix

So I guess i would say i do both in my sets, and it just depends on the 2 tracks i am mixing together.
