Exclamation ZUH-OH--- smoking m1mk2s

SO I just bought my Alesis M1 MK2s active studio monitors from djmart.com

And the right one works great. It is connected to a powerstrip with a surge protector. But the left one, wasn't as protected when I plugged it in. And I smelled that frightening and oh too familiar smell. Electrical burning.

So I quickly unplugged and freaked out. And opened up the box. And there is NO visible damage at all. The circuit board is great, the wires are fine, and the tweeter/woofer look to be in great condition, my concern is what was fucking burning? Was it some of the padding, but I couldn't see any wires too close to the insulation. Anyway. I'm freaked I'm going to try plugging it in again to a protected power source after closer inspection.

Thoughts? Ideas?

Here are pics:

Bring them back and ask for new ones. I don't know what it is with alesis, but they seem to have problems with most of the left monitors on the mkII's, as I've read from some other peeps that had some minor problems with them too. When I bought mine, the left monitor was damaged from the outside and when playing sound through it there was a noticable rumble from it. Might be transport damage or something. I immediately called the store I bought them from and had them replaced. The second pair I got are in great shape.

Just some thought and ideas from me .

Hmm, don't know your sources for saying "them having problems with left monitors on the MKII model" I've sold quite a lot of pairs of these monitors, including to a few TA's here, and I don't think any of them came back because of manufacturer defect, I don't think I've even had a complaint about these monitors

Cheers...

Didn't mean to say something bad about the mkII's (and I didn't actually), I have them too and like them . Just in his case I'd bring them back and ask for new ones.
Well, the 'sources' as you put it fancy as if it was about some secret : Just people on other forums that shared their experiences with these monitors. As you can see from this thread only, DJFreaq has had some kind of minor weird 'problem' as have I both on the left monitor. Coincidentally those other peeps too, on the left one.

Again these are some nice monitors, but the left monitor thing is strange...maybe aliens lub the left ones and have hot thumping sex with them late a night when we are asleep, really giving it to them: "yeah biatch, want more! *smack* .

Thanks for the info, wanted to know where you got your info, so I know what to respond with if there should be a customer complaint about these. Oh and just an FYI, Alesis has discontinued the M1MKII Actives but new pair sets will still be available till around end of August, new replacement model is I believe the M1 active 620 at price point same as M1MKII actives were, $399.00

Cheers...

Sorry to hijack your thread DJFreaq
Interesting! The tweeter doesn't have that offset and it seems they placed the power switch on top (which is more convenient if you ask me).
Sleeker design, but what about the bassports? Have they placed these on the back or is this picture still a draft.
I bought my mkII's in april, but if I had known I would've waited either for the new ones or some bargains on the mk's. Thanks for the info so far .

Edit: Just headed over to the alesis website and the bassports will be on the rear. What's more interesting is that they added EQ switches so that you can place them in corners or close to the wall etc. (just like other monitors already have such controls).

Hi-jacking is fine. My motherboarded died a few days ago. I just got back up and running FUCK GIGABYTE. <3 Asus.

I hate to be gay. But I think the new Alesis powered monitors are... well... really gay looking.

But looks aside I'm sure they sound nice.

Personally I dig the all black with that little blue light and front bassports.

And so far these monitors have been fantastic. That weird problem at the beginning was a strange fluke. Seriously for the money only 400 bucks retail, they're fantastic sounding.

i have a pair of m1 actives and my left monitor is slowly dying on me =[

ahaha TINFOIL HAT TIME

Posted by wrzonance on Jul-14-2005 15:33:

That's just too weird. What's with the left monitors seriously?

And yes. Wear your tinfoil hat, although I doubt it will help.

Open it up and randomly solder things! That always works!
