Variable Bit Rate MP3s

Am I the only one who hates these things?

the kbps is jumping all over the place, you can't tell how long the song is, sometimes it will skip, they take more processor usage, blah..

They annoy the hell out of me.

does anyone know a good way to re encode a VBR mp3 to a CBR mp3?

I tried the lame mp3out plugin for winamp, it took forever, and when I got the output file, it was at half the speed of the original!

any help or sympathy out there?

i've never had any problems with VBR at all.. in fact.. i encoded every dune cd and 12" i had with VBR last yeah and burned a collection cd and they all sound fantastic.

yeah, u usually shouldn't be having any problems with VBR...but if u wanna convert it to cbr then u can get musicmatch, it has a converter that comes with it...or search for sum at cnet.com or zdnet.com...

peace

yeah, they sound fine.

but, it's annoying that the track time left doesn't work.

makes them impossible to work with in VTT

Normally i don't have any problems with them..

But i convert them anyway. I use mpeg suite..
it is a freeware. you can download it in the newspage/software here on ta

what are you talking about that the time remaining doesn't work right? I have a few hundred vbr mp3s and they all work fine!!

I have a few of them and what he means is that the total time of the song doesnt display correctly. a 4 minute song might appear to only be 1 minute long in winamp...i think/

Posted by AnotherWay83 on Dec-07-2001 07:33:

yeah, because winamp calculates the time of a song as a function of the bitrate...so if this bitrate is not constant then obviously the track length will be wrong...thats how i think it works..

well I have never had problems with wrong times in winamp. In media-player, YES. But that is Microsoft
Also in Traktor the remain time works with VBR and why do you need it anyway? Don't ya know your tracks well enough???

Posted by Fraggle on Dec-12-2001 11:15:

ya, i agree

vbr's stuff up the calculated times on winamp

but, i dunno if they're better than 192kbps...are they supposed to be smaller or larger files? and better or worse quality!?!?!?

i have no idea

they are smaller with same quality (or better, depends to what CBR you are comparing). go to www.r3mix.net for more information.
