The operation was one of the most visible signs of stepped up security measures around Italy following Thursday's attacks in London and threats that Italy might be targeted as well for its support of the U.S.-led wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. The Interior Ministry said it was stepping up police and intelligence controls around the country, and in particular around sites most at risk of terrorist attack. British installations in Italy were the top priorities. But some 13,246 sites around the country � including U.S. and NATO bases, telecommunications centers, public utilities and the Turin 2006 Winter Olympics site � also were under special surveillance and had been since the beginning of the year, the ministry said. The ministry also said it was looking into possible new emergency legislation to deal with the terrorist risk. It didn't elaborate. The new measures came after a group calling itself "The Secret Organization of al-Qaida in Europe" said the bombings were punishment for British involvement in the U.S.-led wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and said Italy and Denmark would be attacked for their support of the U.S.-led coalitions in both countries, too. Premier Silvio Berlusconi said Friday that Italy would begin withdrawing 300 troops from Italy's 3,000-strong contingent in Iraq, but denied the withdrawal was linked to any terrorist threats against Italy. He had previously said he hoped to begin withdrawing troops by September, though officials later pushed the date back to early 2006. Berlusconi is a staunch ally of President Bush and sent about 3,000 troops to Iraq after the fall of Saddam Hussein to help rebuild the country. there not winning, and they wont. This war againts terrorism isnt a 2 year thing, it takes time.

oh yeah and Berlusconi decides to withhold troops after the day of the bombings in London. This guy is a fucking pussy, might aswell go sucks chiracs french tits.

I disagree with your statement. In a way the terrorist here are winning. For example, here in America we have lost a lot of our rights especially with the Patriot Act. A lot of our rights have been violated here in America. They ARE SPREADING FEAR. How can you tell me they are not winning when no government has proven that its citizens are 100% secure from any attacks. Just look at the attacks that occured in Spain, Al Qaeda didnt only carry out the plan succesfully but they negotiated with Spain and made Spain pull out its troops. London, England one of Americas biggest allies got attack, and every citizen there now is certainly scared of another one, definetly, the whole point of terrorism is to promote fear and they are doing that, and we see no signs that we are weakening this type of crime. Sure is we capture Osama, that is not going to mean that we have ended terrorism,No! We will see some of his followers carry out other types of operation. Its interesting that if we want to end terrorism might as well go to Colombia and tackle down las FARC, a major organization that uses terrorism these people are notorious.

Yes it wont take 2yrs to end it, it would take decades. To be honest with you i think we cannot ended. Terrorism is nothing new, since the beginning of history humans have enconture them. But to control it we need a global effort of all the nations that want to commit themselves in making the world a more secure place.

I've always wondered what the appropiate answer to terrorist attacks would be like. I'm talking about society's everyday life, its attitude and behavior towards the immimnent threats.

1. Showing that Terrorism does not impress you, and that you live your lives as if nothing has happened. Not signalizing any sort of weakness.

Disadvantage: Terrorists might feel motivated to top the latest attack in order to impress more the next time. "If train bombings didn't raise an eyebrow we should move on to nuclear strikes".

2. Create a media spectacle, raise security levels, angrily show terrorists that they have hurt you, but you will strike back. By that the people show that they have NOT started to accept terrorism as as another "normal" aspect of everyday life and terrorists did not succeed in getting us used to regular masscares.


Disadvantage: Terrorists realize they have suceeded in disturbing our normal lives, causing confusion, anger and fear.


Guess there's no right response. It's a lose-lose situation.

The whole concept of a 'war on terror' is idiotic to begin with. Everything they do only feeds the movement and makes it that much worse. Anti-americanism isn't a group of people with bombs who want to blow up stuff - it's an idea, and one that grows for every innocent (or otherwise) man, woman and child killed as a result of american occupation. It's the reason this movement exists in the first place. Those same people today who are responsible for aggravating the conflict are the cause of 9-11, the madrid and london bombings, and everything that is to come - and that includes both the terrorists themselves and 'everyman' americans.

very interesting point,
it is rather disturbing that the US only focuses "anti-americanism" on the middle east where in every country in latin american as i can say from my expirience(sp?) its as lively only we dont take it to the levels that the supposed arabs do. I mean its actually quite ridiculous(sp?) that US citizens get upset when ppl go against their government, note that i did not said against US citizens but the government, i mean whenever there has been an empire someone has to critize it or it will ran rampant and uncontrolled, specially when the ppl living inside said empire do not do anything to controll it.
That is my opinion. The anti american feelin is everywhere and the US has to acknowledge that fact and find a resanoble(sp?) answer to that situation, and one that pleases all sides as the US is only a superpower because the rest of the world contributes to it being a superpower. In isolation no nation or empire can be an superpower.

If their are any flaws in my arguments ill adress them later cuz right now i just beer bonger four of the bigs coronas that are like two regular beers in like an hour and a half and the alcohol is startin to kick in

I'm confused.
If terrorism is so 'anti-American' when why not strike America? Why aren't we seeing more terrorist attacks on American soil?

That's like me not liking my friend on the right so I slap my friend on the left; it makes no sense.

Why would terrorists risk involving the rest of world if they want to make such an, "anti-American" statement?

...and what exactly does, "...a result of American occupation" mean exactly when terrorist attacks (aka "movement") have been happening way before such a concept existed?

It's not just anti-America, it's anti-Western cultures. Although America has spearheaded the "war on terror" so attacks in other countries we have gotten involved in the war could probably be linked to American foreign policy as well.

anti-Western sounds more plausible and is a different arguement as well.
