Carte Blanche.

What exact trance genre does it fall in.
And also Universal Nation and Cafe del mar.

epic/anthem ish, you'll find lots of arguments on this, esp from those who've read a certain guide, but that's just being awkward. To be honest categorizing everything in genres is a bit silly, just put it as 'good' or 'bad' much easier

if so Carte Blanche will prolly fall into the 'good' category...love this tune, quality production by VDM!

defo anthem status for all 3 carte blanche is uplifting.....but wats the point just call it trance

precisely, too much is given now to putting everything into small neat categories then arguing about it, rather than just 'trance'

We're talking about Veracocha - Carte Blanch? I thought it was produced by Ferry Corsten..

Veracocha = Ferry + VDM

..i'd rather just call it trance.

exactly...and since ferry has no real clue about making melodies the melodic part was prolly VDM's work.

I because 'trance' is too broad a term.

I like the epic trance ala Carte Blanche, but I don't like tech trance.

They are different sounds, and as such deserve different classifications, much like a saloon car differs from a hatchback

Most so-called coupes still have a back seat It's claustrophobically small most of the times, that's true, but still.

progressive
uplifting/epic
hard
tech
commerical

they're all ok ones, it's when you get arguments over sub-divisions to that mate, like the whole 'dutch' or 'anthem' etc

Are you basing that on anything, or just randomely slanderising someone successful?

good.

I would call it very bad pop trance. But that's me.

He does have a point though. The main melody in Carte Blanche sure sounds more like VDM's work at the time than Ferry's. But maybe they worked it out together, who knows.

Here's my take:

Carte Blanche is mostly Epic with a bit of Anthem. The melody is 32-beat (Epic), but could fairly be considered two 16-beat Anthem lines that vary by a note or two. It's emotional, but quite anthemic as well. However the piano number is pretty much a dead giveaway; piano melodies were more or less copyrighted by Epic after 1996-97, and are almost entirely absent from Anthem.

Universal Nation is one of the best examples of Anthem trance out there. In fact, it's an excellent reference point from which to define the subgenre. It pumps along with an archetypical anthem line from start to finish. Not surprisingly, Strange World is another of the best Anthem Trance examples.

The Three 'n One remix of Cafe del Mar is mostly Anthem (16-beat lead, pure fanfare mood) but also has major Progressive Trance components. It lies in that grey area of 1996-97 when Anthem was growing out of Progressive Trance, and wasn't always easily classified. Standard Anthem Trance usually busts out with the main anthem line not too long after the intro, but the Three 'n One builds and builds for over half the track until it arrives at the lead. So the answer is both Anthem and Progressive Trance, but more Anthem.

Actually I find it pretty interesting to pick apart subgenres as best as possible. Perhaps in the same way that some people enjoy reading the phone book.

It's my own pathological pursuit, which I recognize others shouldn't necessarily follow or care about. I'm just trying to create order for myself, because that's something I do.

Yes, but Corsten has come up with countless well written hooks all by himself. Hell, he probably writes better hooks than De Moor.
