NJ gas is one of life's greatest mysteries - they pump it for you, but it's cheaper

Posted by yujie__ on Jul-15-2005 02:20:

isn't it required by law that they pump it for you in nj ~~~***for safety reasons***~~~? thats what i heard

it's required by law

The Garden State is one of two states where it's illegal to fill 'er up yourself. Only gas station owners or employees can pump gas in New Jersey and Oregon -- "the only two states atavistic, sadistic, and masochistic enough to still require thousands of 'professionals' to waste time, money, and inconvenience customers," according to one columnist.

The ban on self-service gas stations is a highly combustible issue and makes for some heated debates. New Jersey passed the law making it illegal to pump your own gas in 1949. At the time, legislators felt it was too dangerous to have untrained people dispensing such a flammable liquid.

That may have been sensible at the time, but pumping gas is much safer today, and some motorists feel the ban is outdated and needs to go. Opponents of the law argue that removing it would lower the cost of gas and make refueling much quicker and more convenient. Proponents of the ban argue that it creates jobs and customers like full service.

Whatever your position on the matter, next time you're in Jersey and need to refuel, take the opportunity to relax in the comfort of your car while the gas station attendant does the dirty work.

ain't it great?!

there's nothing stupid about it... and it's certainly not an inconvenience- it's definitely more a convenience than anything else!! it gives me time to make a call, get my deposit slip ready if i'm going to the bank to make a deposit, check my makeup if i'm going out... i love having other pump my gas for me for a cheaper price than ny!

there are two refineries in the entire state - the one in elizabeth and i think there might be one in south jersey too.

what's funny is that i live within 10 miles of like 4 refineries but nobody ever makes that any kind of generalization about the bay area for its refineries.

also, it costs less in new jersey because they resisted increasing the taxes for a long time (i heard they are raising them now though ) it doesnt have anything to do with not having to pump your own gas. i can't tell you how much i miss not having to pump my own gas...

I heard state and fed govt is spending millions this year to get rid of the smell around exit 13 on the Turnpike...

There are 2 refineries, and sewage treatment plants in that area.

I'll have to dissagree - ever wait in those 50 car long lines on the turnike b/c there are like 2 dudes working 30 pumps... and, I can, through some feat of magic, manage to talk on the phone while pumping gas . The fact that NY is so expensive is that it's... well... NY, and like everything else, they tax the shit outta it. My opinion, repeal the ban

So you enjoy pumping your own gas in the middle of the winter knee deep in the snow.....NJ might be ass backwards on a lot of things but pumping your own gas must stay and NO you don't have to tip them.

New Jersey has three gasoline-making oil refineries and is near four more in Pennsylvania and Delaware. It is also home to most of the petroleum storage in the New York Harbor, with major distribution pipelines crossing the state.

New Jersey drivers also pay the second-lowest fuel taxes in the United States, amounting to 14.5 cents a gallon, according to the oil-industry group American Petroleum Institute.
