Are you indirectly killing the music scene?

Just wondered what your thoughts were on this?

I have notice how annorak like some peoples comments are on this website and how tune spotting a lot of you are. Which is fine as everyone is entitled to do what they want and talk about what they want.

However Almost every dj i have spoke to about this subject thinks that you guys are killing the industry. Due to constant moaning, Every dj has to play the newest stuff out or they will be barracked and slated by people on forums such as this one for playing tunes that were(dare i say it!) one month old!!

Also if a single mix goes out of place they are labelled a rubbish dj and are also in line for a Slating. This i find most unfair.

Now I don't know what you all listen to dance music for but I for one listen to it to have a good time and because i enjoy the music. This was what i originally did for a few years but i have felt since 2000 people have started taking dance music far too seriously due to people being what i would say is a bit to geeky about dance music.

Now I expect to be called every name under the sun after stating this but i would appriciate some constructive critisim back if you are going to say anything.

Your Thoughts????

True.

But even if someone hasn't sipped a bit of alcohol then why would there opinion differ to anyone elses?

I personally love it when dj's throw in an old toon(years not months). Blast the the past, brings back good memories.

Its really a very vocal and small minority that says this stuff, they coudln't possibly be making any significant impact.

Actually thats what i would call all the ppl you are refering to! No fuckin way do they have enough power to "kill" the scene. Shit in this area it barely exists, and though ppl bitch, you still see them at most shows. Shit Check any forum on any topic and ppl bitch, thats part of being on the nerd box! not just this site... Forums are generally rubbish imo.
I Love the music, thats why i listen, im no where near as picky as some of these tarts lol.
Check the "trance cheese" thread, some ppl say that all trance is cheese... but they're still listening : go figure.

Posted by MR FLOW on Jul-17-2005 19:45:

Well its nice to see people share the same opinion as myself then.

I think people need to enjoying clubbing a bit more rather than just go to see what tune is going to be played and moan about how this isn't as good as the old days.

I am only talking about clubbing in the uk tho and parts of Europe as i haven't been to far fetched with my clubbing adventures, Howevr i get the impression this is happening everywhere at the mo?

The MarathonMan concurs with this statement

No, the real problem is the idiot "DJ's" you talk to who aren't doing what they want to do.

What he said.

At the end of the day, this forum is only a drop in the ocean of the dance music scene, and the vast majority of people are in it purely to go out and have a good time.

Personally I couldn't give a shit about DJs. They don't deserve their reputation in this scene. Ultimately, a DJ is nothing more than a walking record player of other people's music. And that music is what really counts. Whether it's old, new, obscure or famous, as long as it does the job at the right time I'm happy.

Well when they try to they are slated for it.

The point i'm putting is people seem to be so wrapped up in whos doing what and why they are doing it that it seems to have taken all the fun out of clubbing.

perhaps the idiot "clubbers" should take a step back and just enjoy themselves

Posted by Aiwendil on Jul-17-2005 21:18:

Most of them do.

dj's are a dime a dozen nowadays...... top dj's are where they are, and expected to play the newest tunes and not mess up a mix because they are making thousands of dollars per gig, and are rannked the BEST of the BEST....... otherwise they wouldn't be getting paid that much money, or have the superstar status that they do

Posted by scAza on Jul-17-2005 22:23:

minor mistakes are fine, a total 'mare of a gig every once in a while is normal, but people who are just shit, and train-wreck all over the show, shouldn't be getting paid 1000s per hour to play.

having said that none of the "big" names are that bad, they all have a basic amount of skill, and most of the bufoons who slag these people off too much, have never once DJ'd in a club, on a big system that isnt set up like the nice familiar ones in their bedrooms with nice working monitors...

anyway in short, these people aren't "ruining the music scene" imo, coz I dont see whats so bad at the mo' ?!?

...yet another dance-music-armageddon prediction while the majority of us still do loads of clubbin and love the music currently

I didn't know DJs were worried about people e-thuggin them on the net. They shouldn't worry.

"Oh man, DJ X played song X and it's one month old!! Or DJ X had a little 2 second trainwreck mixing in the song!"

Good Lord. I bet if the TA posters dated super models they'd complain about how ugly her toe was.

If anything, it's the opposite. DJs are often slated on TA for their faceless rotation of the newest slop off the Epic production line, rather than finding an individual sound and exploring it. Such narrowing of standards, which caters to the casual at-home listener rather than the veteran base, is the problem, not people who are honestly calling a spade a spade.

I really don't care how old of a record the DJ plays so long as it's used toward a distinctive set as a whole. Nevermind the incredible diversity and depth of past music that has gone without lasting recognition, and could easily be played today without a whit of difference to the audience.

The Orkidea set posted on the TA downloads page offers a prime example of what trance DJs should be capable of.

BS. As someone said already, DJs are a dime a dozen. If a DJ can't stay at the top of his game, there are plenty of other talents who ought to fill the place.

I listen to dance music to have a good time, too. But I find that difficult to do when standards of quality have declined to such record-of-the-week mediocrity.

This is bollocks.

Surely the job of a dj is to get people enjoying themselves and dancing?!?! Who cares what djs should be capable of technically, If someone plays good music then they are doing there job properly.

When did I ever say that technical skills were of most importance? They help -- and top DJs should be technically polished without qualification -- but set construction and track selection is at least as important to being a talented DJ. Orkidea's set represents this aspect very well. I wasn't holding it up as an example of technical prowess; there are plenty of Detroit techheads for that.

I guess I was unaware that the best way to get people dancing was to put together a bland set of disposible McProg and half-assed Epic, which sounds exactly the same as the next jock. I vaguely seem to remember a better way to work a set for the crowd.

Marco V played a number of old tunes at sensation and so far I've not seen him being slated. Quite the opposite in fact

Posted by Soeder on Jul-18-2005 02:17:

when we talk about sensation, why the f*** was dj jean doing there?
think that made alot of true trancelovers stay home!

Totally agree.

Mayb its because of the endless amount of internet radio shows or something but nearly all trance mixes of late sound like listening to local commercial radio. The problem is they all sound indisquishable from one another since they are playing the same 10 or so newest tunes.

The worst offenders are the ASOT and AvB taw who i would guess are thinking more about their new realeases promotion rather than making an interesting dj mix.

Play anything enough and people will 'like it'. Has radio and mtv and the crazy frog not proved this

I saw this topic, laughed. Read your initial post, laughed harder. Every form of entertainment, music, movies, theatre, sports, etc. is written about online. Every joe blow and his uncle and dog has got something to say about whats out there. Sometimes this can be a good thing, as an occasional kernal of information is passed along. However, for the most part people are jsut expressing their personal and therefore unobjective viewpoints on various matters. I know DJs visit this site, which I think is cool. But, if a DJ is honestly going to take to heart what a bunch of people say on a message board then he should mature a bit. Just worry about keeping the dancefloors you play for happy, not some unkowns in a forum.

As for the allegation that we (members of tranceaddict I am taking it) are killing the music scene is not just incorrect, but makes my face go red and my brows furrow . Go to the CD/Review board, you have people getting the word out about every freaking release from Oakenfold to Bedroom DJ #124901349. Next, take a trip down to the amateur DJ and Producer's forums, will you see people from all over the world trying to get people to notice their talents. If the attitude of this site was so negative we would jsut all come to a consensus that trance is dead, prog sucks, dnb causes deafness, and Oakenfold looks like a monkey. There would be no discussion, no 20 page threads of what are you listening to... You comments are assanine, and the only thing that is killing the music scene is you going around spreading your nonsense.
