I want YOUR input on TOTY Nomination method

Hello fellow TAs. So far the 1st Half Nomination thread for this year's TOTY is moving along just nicely, with just a small flame war brewing which Coup cleaned up nicely.

Originally I was looking at keeping the nomination threads open for three week periods, but after your input decided to keep them open with a decision on when to close them to come at a later time. Now, my intent is to keep the current 1st Half thread open for a 3 month period, July-September, close it up, and then open the 2nd Half thread in October and close it in mid-December before the voting begins.

Does this sound fair? Does it not? Any suggestions, thoughts, and input would be appreciated.

No, I think the second thread should open 1 January. A lot of people will post soon after the 2nd half thread opens, and I suspect many will be too arsed to go back and edit their selections if better productions come along between October and the end of the year. This will result in skewed results to the July-October group of releases, when December releases are already at a huge disadvantage.

So I can vote for 10 tracks now and then for another 10 for the second half?

The thread above titled "Track of the Year: TA 2005 TOTY: 1st Half Nomination Thread OPEN" asks for your top 10 released tracks from the 1st half of 2005 (January-June).

Later on this year, there will be another thread called "Track of the Year: TA 2005 TOTY: 2nd Half Nomination Thread OPEN" asking all to vote for their top 10 tracks that were released July-December 2005.

Each person can vote once in each thread.

I'm just trying to see when we should open the 2nd thread and how much time to keep both threads open in order to get a proper representation of the two halfs and not delay the final voting process by too much.

Good point Cobalt. Some people will vote right away and never get around to updating their posts to properly account for those monster tunes of October-December.

I really have no problem waiting till January to open the nomination thread, but I think others with an insatiable need for instant satisfaction may bitch about having to wait too long after New Years for the chosen One.

mmm...

So we have two proposals on the board.

1) 1st Half Open from July-September, 2nd Half Open from October-December

2) 1st Half Open from July-Mid-August, 2nd Half Open from Mid-December-January

Anymore suggestions???

i'd opt for this proposal. Cobalt has a good point, october is quite early

we should have a thread where people can submit tracks all year really, but obviously (and unfortunately), a thread like that would be flooded with "OMFG i heard this track 2 min ago on ASOT and it's the best thing i've ever heard"

...has there been 98 / 99 toty threads??

no
it seems we are going from 86 upwards rather than 2000 backwards. the latter would be more interesting imo

TOTY is a joke really. Trance gets a total bias no matter what interesting stuff has come out of the rest of the EDM spectrum. Personally, Galvanize by The Chemical Brothers would be my track of the year, but it won't even amass enough votes to get onto the poll.

Whatever method you choose you're going to end up doing a lot of work towards the end. Is there's going to be only one final poll for 32 tracks? If so, the workload will be much less.

Anyway, good luck with the TOTY. Don't let the negative comments get to you.

i know the argument i'm about to use is clich, but it applies very well here.. let's see, how shall i put this....

yes, TRANCEaddict.com's TOTY is a joke, because TRANCE gets a total bias.

and it's not even bias, trance tracks just happen to get more votes. if we extrapolate this idea to politics, it is called democracy. i take it you support totalitarian regimes?

I support open-mindedness. If it was trance track of the year, it would make sense, but the poll includes all styles of EDM. Why?

I definately don't like the fact that separate remixes will count as the same track. But other than that I think this is a well planned poll.

You know the average musical taste of TA, you know there are lots of totally "uneducated" newbies who vote on the polls without posting regularly on the forums, and you know all of these people don't get to listen to and evaluate all the relevant EDM releases. There's not a need to ask why.

i think the admins should do whatever the hell the want or just do everything opposite of what all the whiners want to just piss them off.

Pretty good interpretation of how America runs

M@t, if you support a 99 or 98 TOTY voting, why don't you run it and start it at your own leisure?

Posted by Nautilus on Jul-27-2005 17:59:

So, I'm leaning towards closing the 1st half thread by on Aug the 15th, then running the 2nd half thread from Dec 1 to Jan 15 or Dec 15 to Jan 31. I just want to be sure to give the 2nd half thread the same amount of time the 1st half had.

On Aug 1st I'll post a "GET OFF YOUR LAZY ASSES AND NOMINATE" thread which I will keep bumping for 15 days, so people can have no excuse as to why they couldn't get their votes in on time. I'll also be PM'ing all the people that did nominate notifying them of the close date and telling them to finalize their nominations if they are still unsure of their selections.
