Armin, Junkie XL and some other guy - Dallas - 07-23-2005
Just got home, AvB fucking owned. There's just no other way to put it.
He completely embarrassed Jokenfold, and for that matter he owned PvD's last performance at the Lizard Lounge by at least 100%. This was my first time seeing him and I've always heard from friends that have seen him live that he plays more on the progressive side. Well, not tonight...he was dropping some nasty tech that was relentless. He also played a few tracks that bordered on the hard side as well, one in particular was a version of Scot Mac - Damager that I'm not familiar with, I'm guessing it's a bootleg that he's done. This was all balanced out with some very nice melodic trance at the right times. Really, really great set.
Junkie XL, I had never seen him before either, but he put on a damn fine show as well. Great energy and some very good tracks. One thing that I really liked about him was his crowd interaction, very cool. If we could have cut Jokenfold out of the middle, it would have been perfect.
And uh, speaking of Jokenfold...ya, after he wrecked his very first mix, I went outside for the rest of his set to cool off. So ummm, no comment.
Had an INSANE time there and AvB rocked like no other!! His set was hands down the best I've heard in years.
Armin Van Buuren totally blew me away with his performance and tracks. Considering where I live, it was the first time I got to see him perform with my own eyes and ears and he really set the bar way high. It was worth the hearing damage.
Paul Oakenfold was well... I don't know. I sat out on half of it... too bloody hot and too bloody loud.
i thought oakenfold was awesome - i enjoyed the entire show (fav was Junkie's crowd interactions and Armin's set) but left early because of the heat - that place needs to get some better damned air conditioning, as far as it being loud - i thought it was perfect considering I had ear protection - after standing next to the speakers at PVD@LizardLounge i've learned my lesson on ear safety
P.S. Guys quit taking your shirt off - nothing worse than having to deal with a nasty slime ball trying to walk past you or get closer to the stage.

i thought the first half of Armin's set was heaven! however the second half was a little dull IMO, i noticed a LOT of people were leaving during his second half- but im sure it was because of the heat.

I couldnt stop jumping.... everything after that SOS track sucked |

| Originally posted by mal1ce Weird, I was just to the right of the stage in front of the tall stacks and it sounded fine to me. Of course I was wearing my ear filters (musicians ear plugs) so the sound was not so over powering being that close. I know it sounds backwards, but ear protection makes a huge difference, especially at the end of the night when your ears would normally be tired. It sucks that you didn't have a good time, but I can see how you may have been overpowered by the bass (and missed some of the melody) if you were dead center in front of all the subs. I'm not the best at track lists, but I know for a fact he played Purple Haze - Adrenaline, Shivers, Mr. Sam - Lyteo (Rank 1 Remix), and Scott Mac - Damager 02 (MacZimms Remix) all of which have great melodies IMO. Seriously, maybe next time try some ear plugs, even some cheapo ones are better than nothing...especially if you plan to be in front most of the night. |
Anyone remember seeing someone toss a glowstick at Oakenfold?... it hit one of his turntables. You could hear the "POP" it made.
I know Armin played (in no particular order):
Enmass - CQ
Thomas Bronzwaer - Close Horizon
Mr. Sam - Lyteo (Rank 1 Remix)
Eye Wall - (Remy & Roland Klinkenberg Remix)
Randy Katana - Pleasure Island (Dub Mix)
Armin van Buuren - Shivers (Alex M.O.R.P.H. Dub Mix)
Purple Haze - Adrenaline
Armin Van Buuren vs. Gabriel & Dresden - Zocalo
Andy Moor - Halcyon (Original Mix)
Rank 1 - Top Gear
Scott Mac - Damager 02 (MacZimms Remix)
Sting & Police - S.O.S.
Hammer & Bennet - Language (Santiago Nino Dub Tech Mix)
I don't know if you could count the last two tracks he did, he didn't mix them or anything. He just teased us with them before he left, but they were:
Armin Van Buuren & DJ Tiesto - Yet Another Suburban Train
Departure - Without You Near (Gabriel & Dresden Remix)
Well the tracklist is very good. It resembles the tracklist he played here in Cyprus but he had Communication Part 3 or (Part4) also. Serenity. and many others..Halcyon is a good track to uplift you in a club environment with that screaming-shouting voice of woman.!
Anyway, I look forward to Dj Awards to be announced because AvB is really pushing up the limit..he can be number 1 this year!

I was with 4 other trance addicts and they all shared the same thoughts.... u clever shit....how come i never thought of wearing ear plugs hehe....guess i couldve survived the 3 hrs then abt the tracklist... my ears were abt to pop...there was no melody to my ear...couldnt even tell... he did plau zocolo bad deal sos shivers.. but the rest...were all flat to me...all i could make out were thuds....armin felt more like super hard trance that day... okey and junkie on the other hand were very smooth...their sound didnt bother me at all....i think armin also played LOLO's why.... anyways......i just learned 1 big lesson from forest theater....NEVER TO UNDERESTIMATE THE GOD okey im sorry to have shouted armin armin when u went on stage... |
Saw oakey at turnmills in London about 2 months ago where he played a stella 3/4 set, then went a bit cheesy/commercial. Saw him again about a month ago at Clapham Common (also london) and was AWFUL. He's been my boyfriend's hero for about 8 years - the one who turned him to dance music, the guru, the one and only - and my boyfriend was ready to cry at the end. He even said that he wouldn't watch him again at global gathering on the weekend in case he was that bad again... boo......

theres no real trance melody in those armin tracks
its all mcprog trance and some harder stuff thats it.
Oakenfold while has horrible mixing he still plays the classic old school trance. Thats why people still love him.
Armin is in a spot with no creativity right now.

Yea, Oakenfold sucks, plain and simple. He played along with Junkie XL in New Orleans a couple weeks back. His first 3 mixes were so off you would have thought that he just bought his tables, it was unreal. But Junkie made up for it, he had the place rockin!!
