TA Remix Compo 7th Edition
Hi everyone,
Isoterra earlier mentioned the need of someone capable to organize the 8th Edition( or so I was told) of TranceAddict.com Remix Compo.
So here I am willing to help out and take hands on this.
So, without further delay let me explain the nature of this competition, quoted as.
| quote: |
"As for the tune, there was much discussion a while back about this, but i have decided I want it to be Yahel & Eyal Barka - Voyage. Why? It's a well known & well loved classic, has a rather dated sound & dj-unfriendly structure which could use an update, and has little in the way of existing remixes. There also are quite a few layers of melody which should give people enough to work with & be creative with. And it's an instrumental, which a few expressed appeal for (since the last 3 contests have been vocal numbers).
Sample here: http://isoterra.artists.mpfspromotions.com/voyage.mp3
Midi here: http://isoterra.artists.mpfspromoti...ge__unknown.mid "
upload webspace is available on a fast & reliable server. the only problem is that the server owner is rather lazy and doesn't want to set up a new account for me or whoever to access the files ... so basically what will happen is that people will upload the entries to a folder on an ftp, then once the deadline is reached, i can inform him, and he'll zip all the files & move them over to a downloadable location for you & the judges. the only issue with this is that if there are problems with any of the files, you won't notice them til afterwards so things could get drawn out a little. |
Now let me quote previous rules made by Stan himself.
| quote: |
"Genre: This is tranceaddict, so please place your remixes somewhere at least in the electronica genre. Trance is preferred, but feel free to span out into the the harder, chiller, deeper, more progressive, or breakbeat versions of it. No rock or jazz or anything please."
"Collaborations: Up to two people. If you choose to collaborate with someone else, neither of you can submit your own, individual remixes. You either work alone, or with someone else; but not both." |
I have contacted Yahel myself requesting full permission to use his track on this competition, and such was granted.
NOTICE THIS: Yahel said: "I don't want to promise anything but , if I will like the remix
I will offer to the winner to release the remix on my new label FTPmusic".
I hope this encourage you to participate.
I'll be looking for more prizes sponsored by record labels, tho, I can not guarantee them.
If you have any questions, please submit them in this thread, and I'll be delighted to help you out and solve all your concerns.
IMPORTANT NOTICES: No sampling from the original or any other professional song for that matter , not a single riff, if any of the judges notice this, they will desqualify you right away, with no second chances.
Submissions must be exclusive for this competition and NOT posted on forums, especially TA, until the judging is finished.
DEADLINE: September 24th of 2005.
YET ANOTHER NOTICE
Ok, this thing about you uploading directly to FTP server is gonna cause some confusion.
Since like some members requested, I want to supply the tracks to the judges as Remix 1 , Remix 2, so there won't be any biased decisions.
So, for this, PLEASE, upload your final mix to yousendit.com and send it to this e-mail address: [email protected]
I'll take your tracks, back them up in my External Hard Drive, rename them, and upload them myself to the FTP Server.
Please make sure to rename your 192 mp3 remix as Artist_Name_TrackName_TAMember_Name
Thanks

JUDGEMENT SYSTEM
Judges will qualify in scores from 1 to 10, the following 4 categories.
Creativity: I think this is not needed to explain, no brainer knows what this category covers.
Overall Sound: You don't have to be an engineer (if you are, you have more advantage tho) to make it sound decent, judges will look for clarity in the song, clipping, humming , excess of high frequencies , drowning, all of this will be taken under consideration.
Melody: How remixers interprets the main melody and news melodies implemented, if they are harmonious or not etc.
Arrangement: Structure of the track, if they are Dj Friendly or not, if it lacks of drive etc.
MORE ENCOURAGEMENT
Ok mates, I've been looking out for more prizes for the winner of this competition.
First.
O N L I N E - M A S T E R I N G . C O M

how long do we have time?
Posted by PDM on Jul-24-2005 09:23:
You have exactly 2 Months, September 24th would be the last day you have to submit your work .
Posted by Massive84 on Jul-24-2005 09:25:
great paulo .
Maybe i will give it a shot as well..never been in the TA remix comp.
Posted by DJ_RoKo on Jul-24-2005 09:46:
same, im working on it now
Posted by Massive84 on Jul-24-2005 09:59:
I wanne suggest the following as well.
Get 10 judges to judge..but not from this section of forum but from the Music discussion one. Why? because producers have a different ear to listen to music than regular listeners. If you can get 10, get 5 if not get some from here as well. Maybe 4 from MD and 4 from this forum.
When you present the xx amount of remixes to the judges , you don't give them a label. Just track 1, 2 3 etc. it will give a fair review.
Posted by richg101 on Jul-24-2005 11:05:
count me in.
never heared this track till i listened to the sample.
that bassline s leavin some major scope for imagination!
i recon it would be a good idea it have the producers names unavailable during judging to prevent people being biased.

could someone find a better MIDI for this, as when i import the MIDI file in Cubase, i get ALL channels and notes in one channel
Posted by RickyM on Jul-24-2005 12:26:
I really like this melody, was playing around with it, so i might have a go at it.
Posted by in_dreams on Jul-24-2005 13:18:

i disagree, because all they can rely on is their taste. what i'm saying is that a lack of bass or too many highs on a hi-hat could go unnoticed, for example..
the technical side of the remixes is important as well, the remixes should be reviewed as objectively as possible.. just have a look at the criteria used in previous competitions:
- Originality: 20
- Sounds and effects: 40
Percussion 15
Synths and effects 25
- Arrangement: 40
Layout/structure 20
Eq/mastering 20
Total: 100

sall good, i just used the wrong notes coz that funked up midi isnt all that accurate.
Posted by Aquarian on Jul-24-2005 14:35:
Shouldn't there be a rating for melodies? I mean, just because it's a remix doesn't mean you keep all the same stuff.

new melodies are covered by the 'originality' criterium

There's two bass layers in the original mix.
The low is D#, A#, B, D#.
The high is D# + F#, A# + C#, F + F#, D# + F#
If that made any sense
Edit: Uploaded an example from the original.

Yeah, I'm definately gonna build a Yarune remix for this!
I think it's a good thing to have different members throughout the forum to judge. Then from every point of view you can get results and that will provide better view on the quality of the remixes.
September 24th is noted. Good luck to all!

I'd say sticky this thread. And spread the word.
PDM, maybe a list in the first post who is planning to participate or judge so we have a bit of an overview of the size of this.
