Amen Break

In case some of you haven't seen this before I thought I could post it here. It's about the infamous Amen sample, or the Amen break.

Infamous or not, doesn't ring a bell with me (at least the name)

I'll have a look, thanks for the link!

I already knew about the origins of the Amen break, but this was extremely fascinating, and kinda infuriating regarding the crazyness of copyright laws and how this break somehow escaped the pandemonium of legality.

Thanks for the link.

It took me years to find out what that was when I first heard it in 1991.. took me some time!
That break and the akai s950 that was used to trigger it back in the day is responsible for drum n bass- THE breakbeat and responsible for so much that followed....

ps- I typed that before i listened to it- and hes just mentioned it in it...lol - total respect for playing original nuttah too!!!!!!!!

Anyone into drum programming should seriously take note as you will learn a lot from that

Not impressed with *what*?

The original break was played live, you fool. And it didn't impress anyone, that's the whole POINT - almost nobody knows the original song but one tiny drum solo in the middle spawned two whole genres of electronic music and one genre of pop music. Did you actually listen to the documentary or did you just skim through half of it?

I skipped some parts yeah. If you had the patience to watch the whole video, you must have eaten a few tons of coffee beans.

Even if you don't like it, you gotta respect the Amen Break. Hundreds of tracks were made from that six seconds alone. It's an audio legend, and like DigiNut said, it created 3 fucking genres by itself. If that's not impressive for a six second drum loop, I don't know what is.

Well, with that much patience (not to mention high standards!) you must surely have some brilliant tracks of your own to share with us?

a VERY meaningful recording if you ask me.

Especially the part at the end about copyrights and overprotection of music restricting creativity of artists and building new sounds and fanbases. Definately something to think about!

I like the general sound of the Amen Break when used in the proper context. I've even sampled it at 75 BPM then sampled it again, quieter, at 150 BPM overtop... it sounds pretty good

It is amazing that it escaped the tangled web woven by copyright law.

2) my farts sound better than my productions
3) i am too ashamed to share them (my productions)
4) perhaps i should import some amen breaks in my productions to spice them up

The Amen is a great beat i use it all the time in my drum 'n bass tracks although very well hidden and btw great find Icone

Myself and a friend were killing some time in the studio several years back, and had a total mindfuck by wondering how much they should have made in royalties if they were paid the publishing and mechanicals they were due for every use of it...

Just realised, that drumbeat is really everywere :S

Threw on a DJ Slipmat set, and every track in there uses that sample.

Incredible.

And I hate copyright, copyright is wrong...
