REVIEW: M.I.K.E. and MARKUS SCHULZ in Calgary

Oh, where do I begin with this poorly promoted event by enigma? AS mentioned already, wrong spelling of the name on both flyers and tickets. Second, tickets go on sale TWO days before the event. No wonder why many of the TA's couldn't make it. Either that, or was skeptical to make it.

I give much respect and props to both M.I.K.E. and Markus, as this was the worse turn out I've ever seen at a trance event - and I thought the turn out at the M.I.K.E. show last year was bad...sadly, I was very wrong. What a blow to the ego, where 1,500 people show up in VanCity.. and less than 100 show up in Calgary. Im pretty sure the dj's weren't the slightest bit happy. Otherwise, both of the Dj's had awesome sets! (enough to get about 10-20 people on the dance floor moving).

This will be the last Enigma promoted event I will ever go to. For all the TA's, think twice before you buy your tickets for an Enigma promoted event.

PS It seems like that the Enigma group spent more time and money on making "back stage" type passes to hang around their necks, rather than on the actual hype of the event...how sad.

wow what idiots. what a waste of 2 talented acts.

Enigma Go Home

I knew this would happen. I previously aired my concerns in the other thread about this event regarding the horrible promotion. Enigma are a bunch of clowns and the only reason their first event was successful was due to it being Armin Van Buuren. I rarely miss a trance event and I purposefully stayed away from this one because I knew it would be empty. In Calgary, the scene won't support events with lesser known DJS (by Calgary's standards) unless it is well promoted. Hopefully, M.I.K.E. and Markus won't hold this abomination against our city and will return one day to spin for proper promoters (ie. Fehrenheit)

A birdie told me enigma lost $70k on last night. Ouch.

at the end its the club/promoters that lost out the most I guess.

I can't believe your event was so poorly put on! I feel very bad for you peeps in Calgary! You had such a great opportuniy to witness soemthing special and those stupid fucks at Enigma basically screwed you and themselves!
Hopefully next time you get some better promotion companies, or try and make the road trip to Van!

Posted by Promoter on electrocalgary.com:

"Although it was somewhat of a lack of effort, the blame also goes to the short notice that was given to us to organize things. The agency that represents Markus Schulz and Mike Push only gave us a month to promote this event therefore things weren't very organized. Therefore this event wasn't a success. I myself was very disappointed from this outcome. However, we're learning from our mistakes and hoping that in the future this will never happen again. We appreciate those of you who took the time to come out and support us. Thank you."

How is a month not enough time to promote an event? Idiots! Get a flyer made and print some tickets. How hard is that? They didn't even have tickets at outlets until a few days before the event. WTF? Were they printed in Banghladesh? Ticketmaster can get you tix the next day.

At least they'll feel the consequences of their idiocy...losing a reported 7k.

Posted by unconscious on Jul-26-2005 03:59:

Don't worry we lost a reported 6k on our Darren Tate event lol plus this was on a sunday night now that has gotta hurt since not too many peeps come out on a sunday night even for top notch talent sometimes. I'm pretty sure they had done what they could do in a months time and trust me that ain't very much time to organize an event.

I felt so bad for MIKE and Markus, when MIKE came on, I swear there were 3 people dancing. Then I thought we gotta show some respect to these guys, so my buddy and I finally went on the dance floor. MIKE dropped a kick-ass set, dark and emotional, and Markus hit us with his Coldharbour style and put on his unreleased remix of Led Zeppelin. It was unreal! Then I started thinking, f**k the promoters, f**k Calgary, f**k the lack of support that night. For those 15+ of you who came and danced, thanks for being there for the love of music. Without MIKE, there wouldn't be PUSH, Plastic Boy, Solar Factor, and so on. Without Markus, we wouldn't have a chance of hearing a whole new sound in electronic dance music. Having a chance to chat with MIKE and Markus about their upcoming plans, producing, and music in general was an experience I'd never forget.

For all of those whom did not attend thanks! you made the night better, the small intimate crowd for M.I.K.E and Markus was something different, from the usual sold out shows on the weekdays and friday and saturday nights! M.I.K.E and Markus both played some amazing sets i want to exntend my thanks again to both of them!! That zepplin track was awsome! good work markus! The best was at the end of Markus' set when he came down and we got a chance to talk to him! That was truly amazing

I have read all the complaints etc about this show, and I have to send my warm wishes to the promoters. I know how you feel. One month is NOT LONG ENOUGH to promote a show...trust me. I know from experince having extremely poor turnouts for John Selway and Treavor last year. We promoted our Chris Liberator show for three months and barely broke even.
The truth is if people want to go they will go. 90% of people who buy tix do so the four days prior to the event. I do think it would have been better to have tix available beforehand, but sometimes it is just not feasible. Plus sometimes delaying ticket release actually boosts ticket sales purely out of anticipation from patrons.
I think this show was simply a case of bad timing. Post-Stampede people are broke, exausted and still nursing their fortnight long hangovers. Unfortunately not a good combo to try to push another show on...on the upside I really commend the promoters for admitting their mistakes and learning from them. That is half the battle. I know they will have many successes in the future.
I am glad that a show like Markus and M.I.K.E. happenned in Calgary. Take away the financial loss for the promoters and you have a wonderfully intimate setting for two top notch DJ's.
Personally I would rather play for 20-50 people who really wanted to see me and were into the music than 500+ punters who are so off the heads that they can't tell what is happenning.

Just my two cents.

Posted by Darkevil on Jul-26-2005 19:12:

well.. my bro and I were of the few that showed up.. drove 300kms to meet Markus and MIKE and it was well worth it... it was a shame that the turnout was bad.. but it gave us diehard fans a chance to talk to him and stuff.. plus having the Tidy Boys on the same night doesn't help either... But Promotion of this event would have been a great idea.. Boodang had told me that they didn't even see any promo material available for this event so they figured that the party would be dead...

Posted by ChadVanDyk on Jul-26-2005 22:56:

Here is the flyer...no ticket locations or prices and Markus' name is mis-spelled. C'mon...you have to do a bit better than this even with a one-month time restraint.

Posted by Mortyman on Jul-27-2005 01:00:

Geez, that a pretty lame flyer
It hurts to look at it.

Posted by Silence_S on Jul-27-2005 07:37:

you know whats even worse? on the back of the flyer, it lists Markus Schulz' website (markusshulz.com) correctly! If you see that the spelling of the name is different from the dj's website - its not hard to put one and one together and see something is wrong. Editing for flyers and tickets do not need one months time.

rofl.... i didnt even notcie that =P

Posted by burtonlinx on Jul-30-2005 04:27:

imo MIKE is the absolute best producer in trance right now with the exception of maybe Marcos or Fred Baker.

and Markus's radio show (GDJB) is probably one of the top 5 most followed shows in the world right now

One of the best combinations i've ever heard of for a calgary clubnight!

shame

IS!, WAS!, AND EVER WILL BE!

Talking with Mike, he said that he's done with trance btw! He's moving on to different styles, more of his own style, a more housy style but still with some sweet melodies.
He says his fans will follow him. He's got my support!
