Arrow the FC Porto thread

I may very well be the only Porto fan on these boards.. but if there was a thread for Crystal Palace why the hell can't there be a thread for this great club.
-------------

Name: Futebol Clube do Porto

Funded: 1893

Stadium: Estdio do Drago

(built for Euro 2004)

Footballing History:

- 2 Intercontinental Cups
- 2 European Champions Leagues/Cups
- 1 UEFA Cup
- 1 European SuperCup
- 20 Portuguese League Titles (19 in current format, 1 in the old 1930's format)
- 12 Portuguese Cups
- 14 Portuguese SuperCups
- 4 Portuguese Championships (trophy in the 1920's and 30's in the format of the current cup)

Kit for the 2005/2006 season:

Squad for the 2005/2006 season:

1st row:
99 - Vtor Baa
Goalkeeper, 35 years old, portuguese. A Porto legend who won countless titles for the club. For the first time in a couple seasons, he has competition for his place with the arrival of Helton but should be the first option.

1 - Helton
Goalkeeper, 27 years old, brazilian. Comes from Leiria after an excellent season which made him a target for several clubs. Has a bunch of caps for the brazilian national team, which he got before arriving at Portugal.

2 - Jorge Costa
Centre-back, 33 years old, portuguese. The other legend, right next to Vitor Baa. However personally I'm not his biggest fan, I think most supporters share my opinion that he's too old for the job. Plays tough, gets lots of yellow and red cards.

4 - Pedro Emanuel
Centre-back, 30 years old, portuguese. While not the most well known player on the squad, he had a very good season last year contrary to the rest of the team. The question is, can he keep the form? I doubt it a bit.

3 - Ricardo Costa
Centre/left-back, 24 years old, portuguese. Young, criticised by many who believe he isn't good enough to be on the national team, is however becoming already a symbol of the club. Has the potential to develop into a solid player.

15 - Nuno Valente
Left-back, 30 years old, portuguese. While not a fantastic player, Nuno has been for the last couple seasons the best in his position, both in the league and for the national team. Solid at defending, also attacks fairly well.

2nd row:
13 - Bruno Alves
Centre-back, 23 years old, portuguese. Loaned to AEK Athens last season, appears to have been a regular option for the greek side. A bit unknown to me, only remember him from the Olypmic Games where the entire team played awfully.

12 - Bosingwa
Defensive midfielder/Right-back/Right-winger, 22 years old, portuguese. Bosingwa is the handyman of the team, being capable of playing in different positions. Good player, settled at the club, but could have problems in getting a regular first team place.

5 - Leandro
Left-back, 26 years old, brazilian. Arrived at the end of last season from Brazil and wasn't very impressive, but that could be only his adapting period. Seems to be better defending, rarely goes up to attack.

18 - Paulo Assuno
Defensive midfielder, 25 years old, brazilian. Loaned to AEK last season together with Bruno Alves. Again, he's a bit unknown to me, even if he has played in this island for Nacional. Probably a backup for the first team.

14 - Pepe
Centre-back, 22 years old, brazilian. One of the big flops from last season. Bought as a very "promising" player, after a couple huge mistakes was relegated to the bench. I believe he'll stay there in for a while.

6 - Ibson
Defensive midfielder, 21 years old, brazilian. Arrived at the middle of the last season as a complete unknown, and imediately settled in as an important player. Very good technically, reads well the game.

3rd row:
17 - Jorginho
Attacking midfielder, 28 years old, brazilian. Comes from Vitria de Setbal after a brilliant season, leading the club to a Portuguese Cup win. Very skilled and dangerous, prefers however the individual play to team-work.

20 - Diego
Attacking midfielder, 20 years old, brazilian. Hyped as the next great brazilian star, his first season at the club was a bit disappointing even if the team clearly missed his presence whenever he wasn't avaiable. Very talented.

16 - Ral Meireles
Defensive midfielder, 22 years old, portuguese. One of the most low-profile players in the squad, was a backup last season and probably will keep on being one. However I sympathize with him, I believe he can become an useful player.

8 - Lucho Gonzlez
Midfielder, 24 years old, argentinian. Porto's latest big star, Lucho is regularly used as a first team player for his national team (missed the Confederations Cup though). The few times I've seen him playing he seemed excellent.

27 - Alan
Right-winger, 25 years old, brazilian. And here's the stupid deal of the season. Average player, comes from Martimo and I don't believe at all he has the quality to relegate Quaresma to the bench.

39 - Hugo Almeida
Striker, 21 years old, portuguese. Hyped as the saviour for Portugal's lack of good strikers, his last season loaned at Boavista wasn't great. This giant (1.90 metres tall) needs to show something more than just height to claim a first team place.

4th row:
7 - Ricardo Quaresma
Right-winger, 21 years old, portuguese. This guy is stupid. Incredibly talented, completely lacks the brains to realise dribbling past everyone isn't the most efficient way to play football in the 21st century. There's still some hope he might realise that, he'd become the next Cristiano Ronaldo.

25 - Ivanildo
Left-winger, 19 years old, portuguese. Porto's latest young star, was given a chance to play by Jose Couceiro the end of last season. Haven't seen much from him, but he seems to be quality all round technically. But lacks strength, and dives.

10 - Hlder Postiga
Striker, 22 years old, portuguese. Wtf have you british guys done to him was the question last season has he returned from Tottenham totally changed for the worse. In the end, he returned to form and started scoring goals. Apparently he's being adapted to attacking midfielder with some success.

22 - Fatih Sonkaya
Right-back, 24 years old, turkish. Well, we just bought a player who was a backup for Besiktas, that can't be good. Let's wait and see, rumour has it that he's very strong physically but a donkey with the ball on his feet.

11 - Lisandro Lpez
Left-winger/striker, 22 years old, argentinian. Comes from Racing Avellaneda and he's another total unknown. But the press says he's done some excellent work in pre-season and could be a surprise. I hope so.

19 - Tomo Sokota
Striker, 28 years old, croatian. Average player that comes from the rival Benfica. I like him, but he's not a big goalscorer, and probably will be another backup.

5th row:
9 - Benni McCarthy
Striker, 27 years old, south-african. Another talented guy who lacks a brain. Not for individualism, but for lack of discipline, as he was sent off several times last season. Hopefully he'll come back to his senses and start scoring shitloads of goals again.

21 - Csar Peixoto
Left-winger, 25 years old, portuguese. Loaned last season to Vitria Guimares, didn't impress, but strangely is back again. He's decent, but probably not good enough for Porto. Quite lazy, sometimes looks like he could play better but can't be arsed to.

29 - Bruno Moraes
Striker, 21 years old, brazilian. Loaned last season to Vitria Setbal. Another predictable backup.

31 - Paulo Ribeiro
Goalkeeper, 21 years old, portuguese. Comes from Vitria Setbal as well (but was bought not returned from loan), is going to be a backup as well. They say he's a future good keeper, but looks dodgy from what I've seen.

Anderson
Attacking midfielder/Left-winger, 17 years old, brazilian. Hyped in Brazil as the next Ronaldinho, was going to be signed now but we'll have to wait until January because of his age. Transfer isn't confirmed tho.

Co Adriaanse
Coach, 58 years old, dutch. Comes from AZ Alkmaar, reaching the UEFA Cup semifinals and causing major upsets in the dutch championship, fighting for the first places. Very strict, likes offensive football. Hopefully the guy we need.

I challenge you guys to make a detailed post like this for your clubs. Or.. ok, forget about it, I just have no life

Next (friendly) matches: Friday 29 against Boca Juniors, and Sunday 31 against Arsenal, for the Amsterdam Tournament. This will be the first matches on TV this season.

Results so far in the pre-season:

13 July: NEC - FC Porto (0-1)
16 July: Benekom - FC Porto (0-7)
20 July: Vitesse - FC Porto (2-0)
23 July: Brugges - FC Porto (2-2, 5-6 on penalties)

The team has been on a tour to Holland with a small trip to Belgium for the Brugges match. 2 wins, 1 draw and 1 defeat so far, but it's way too early to get any conclusions from this.

The first competitive match is in the 21st of August at home against recently promoted Estrela da Amadora for the league. This season, apart for the national tournaments (league and the cup) we're again directly qualified for the Champions League, and will be either on the 1st or the 2nd seeds.

Yesterday: FC Porto 2 - Boca Juniors 0

Goals from Postiga and Jorginho.

Good game overall from the team, the goalie Hlton was particularly well with a couple of nice saves.

that must have been postiga's rebound-lob.. the second goal was quite cool, hugo almeida wins it in the air, jorginho moves faster than the keeper diving to finish

sweet goal . good work with the thread by the way paranoik .

Woah, really good goal there by Rooney.

Today: FC Porto 1 - Arsenal 2

Goal from Lisandro Lopez.

Good first half with the team slightly out-performing the brits (or should we say the french, the dutch, the swede, the.. ). Confident play, lots of good movement in the attack.

Arsenal entered second half at a completely different speed and Ljungberg scored 2 - the problems in our defence really showed off. Then they went back to defend the lead, we gained the control of the ball and had 1 or 2 chances but it wasn't enough.

Overall the exhibition was better than the result, but the defence still keeps looking shaky. Jorginho was our best player, very inspired. On the other hand i didn't like Postiga, can only remember a good shot from him and a bunch of needless fouls.

From Faro.. there used to be a team called Farense who even got to qualify for UEFA Cup a couple years ago. Now they're in the 4th level due to financial problems..

There's this new team called Algarve United (founded last year by some rich as fuck italian) who is at 5th level, their goal is to climb all the way up in 5 or 6 years. They just hired Paul Gascoigne (player/manager i believe).

Never got the chance to visit that place tho..

3rd division. cause there's a "2nd league" and a "2nd division b" below it

they aren't the only former 1st division team that sunk miserably.. only counting teams that were there from the 90s till now:

- Salgueiros just dropped to the same level than Farense. last season they got 1 win, 2 draws and 35 defeats in 38 games
- Tirsense is at the same level than Farense
- same for Lea
- Famalico was at the same level, got promoted this season
- Campomaiorense left football
- Alverca is going the same way as Campomaiorense, at the moment they have 1 manager, 4 players and shitloads of debt

Yep probably but who cares cuz it doesnt cout

i hope el hamdaoui is gonna play against porto and score

Posted by noikeee on Aug-07-2005 12:26:

Tottenham 2 - FC Porto 0

(Defoe scored both)

Didn't see the game so can't comment much. Suposedly we lacked on finishing and they just didn't.

This puts an end to the fight for the goalkeeper place as Co Adriaanse said whoever played in this match would be the main goalie for the season. Vtor Baa was picked, Hlton will be the backup.
