Unhappy Joe Nieuwendyk and Garry Roberts both left the Leafs this morning...

...discuss...this is shitty, both are excellent players...I hope the Leafs have something up their sleeves...a younger team maybe?

I liked Nieuwendyk, but Roberts was always an overrated player. Still not as overrated as Domi though - now that's a player i'd like to see gone.

Yea, but from I've been reading, Domi's been hangin' out with Lemieux in the last few days too.

On a postive note, we did pick up Jeff O'Neil

There's alot of players moving around...

We are gonna see a very different NHL this year

Yes....veeeeery exciting for sure!!

Yeah, I'm happy about that. It's good to shake things up once in a while.

leafs are thinking long term and are waist deep in crap this comming season....they have alot of work to do. but on another note i think teams like pitsburg, nashville, and other "weak" teams in the pre salary cap nhl will really shine this comming season. i think we are in for some very exciting hockey people

Posted by cono_sur on Aug-02-2005 04:36:

It's about time they made some room for the young guys.

Posted by amb_ on Aug-02-2005 05:04:

Hopefully they can breathe some life into the team...

I could look this up and read about it but I'm too lazy...so who did we pick up when they left?

Posted by High on PSI on Aug-02-2005 12:47:

They had good days as leafs, but they're expensive to keep with the new cap, and they're too old. The leafs need to get younger, so im hoping they'll pick up another strong and young centre.

Kinda sad to see Roberts gone...

Like stated previously though, I wouldn't miss Domi. He's seriously overrated. And yeah, Domi has been talking to Pittsburgh. Probably to play Crosby's bodyguard on the first line, heh.

Naslund and Forsberg have the same agent and word is he's shopping them around together as they are both free agents this year. There was some talk of Toronto trying to pick up Forsberg to get a Forsberg/Sundin combination on the first line. Ferguson was meeting with his agent as of a couple weeks ago but issued the timeless 'no comment' when asked about the meetings by the press.

Overall, I'm kind of glad they shaved off some of the older guys. Toronto (and Quinn more specifically) have a penchant for keeping Toronto as an 'older' team and they were inevitably screwing themselves in the coming years as those guys retired and the new, younger talent still hadn't had enough ice experience past juniors. Stajan should get bumped from 4th line, Colaicovo should see a lot more games on D and players like Bell and Kilger (along with other farm team members) will get more ice time.

Looking forward to the season this year.

It is a sad day to see Roberts and Nieuwendyk go but to the prospect of picking up a superstar in the likes of Forsberg or Modano would make Toronto an awesome contender. Picking up Jeff O'Neill wasn't a bad move at all

superstars in hockey are overrated.

Joe and Gary were tough and have heart. And heart goes a long way in the playoffs, whereas a close check can eliminate any 'superstar' advantage.

it had to be done. I was pissed at first, but then again, how many cups have they won us? Time to get younger.

I see your point, but Forsberg is a proven playoff performer.

Roberts and Niewendyk were too rich for the Leafs' blood. With the new NHL Salary Cap being set at $40 million, the Leafs already had $15 million locked up in three players. Sundin ($6M), McCabe (3.5M), and a ridiculous $5M on a 41 year old Ed Belfour.

If the remaining players are to accept their qualifying offers, it only leaves $10M to spend on the rest of their roster (seven players). Roberts and Niewendyk were both demanding in the range of $2 - 2.5 M each, which would then leave them a grand total of $5 M to spend on five more players. This wouldn't even allow any wiggle room and would set them at the cap.

The Leafs are a team that really got beat up because of the Lockout and the new NHL structure. A mass exodus of talent (Mogilny, Leetch, & Nolan) leaves them in a hugely precarious position in terms of raw talent.

I say they need to add at least 2 more talented (scoring) forwards and a decent defenceman (let's say 2 forwards in the $2M range), and let some young talent (like Carlo Coliacovo and Matt Stajan) play a more prominent role on the team this year.

It's too bad, but they really got the short end of the stick with the new NHL structure.

I guess the Leafs are close to signing Jason Allison
