Unhappy Another pathetic Tech Thread

OK, I know this is a little not welcome or w/e but I have a comp i put together a while ago, AMD Athlon XP 2500, Nvidia Geforce 4200, 512 RAM, Chaintech motherboard, some other shit. At first I had no problems with it, then after about a year I got a new power supply and stuff (that's about the only alteration i made to it) a little while after that my comp started to run really slow every once in a while. I formatted multiple times, about 2/3 times and it starts working fine and then once again shit starts to go as slow as a 200 mhz computer. Shit is getting very annoying. I defrag'd it, ran virus protection, got windows SP2 and everything but keeps happening after a while. Help?

ok, i have to break it to you, but we're pulling your leg with the keyboard shit.

hmmm, so it's running slowly eh? do you ever clean up your hard drive from temp files etc? and..i'm not sure what else, i have trouble assigning a diagnosis without actually seeing the comp and using it

Posted by Lepanto on Aug-02-2005 04:20:

Yeah i figured that was a joke, i know a little something about comps as well. i did the clean up files thing. When I look at the Windows Task Manager my performance is 100% when i'm really not running shit.

do you run slowly in safe mode?

is your cpu fan operating properly?

have you tried removing hardware to isolate the problem?

u say you run 100%... what app is hogging the cpu power?

have you checked all your bios settings?

safe mode doesn't change anything

not much hardware to remove...come to think of it, i got a DVD burner a lil while ago that doesn't read CDs (reads DVD-rs and DVDs only) and it might have happaned after that not too sure

no app is really HOGGING the cpu power, just normal shit, explorer, TA.com and aim and it still runs slow. my Commit Charge could be like 120 and still slow as fuck

don't really know what it could be in the bios

Then it might by spyware. That shit has been fucking my computer up.

Thing is i have formatted before but it keeps happening. i've thought about spyware but i use ad-aware along with a corporate copy/version of Norton 2005 that one of my friends gave me from work and it blocks anything for the most part. i remmember one episode when i just formatted and haven't gone on any websites yet and it started to run slow again :\

Ummm does your comp overheat?

You're welcome. Ya, I need to buy a new fan/heatsink combo for my laptop..this shit overheats and it's way too loud..

Posted by Lepanto on Aug-02-2005 04:49:

I was thinking of getting a new case, another 512 ram stick and a 300 gig hd, but this has ruined all my plans, i saw a kick ass case on newegg with water cooling I want that or an AC case (saw it on some forums, the dude attached the portable AC sleeve to the case!)

Posted by tribu on Aug-02-2005 04:52:

Do a check on your RAM. Maybe you fried it or another part when installing the Power supply. Also, make sure youre connections/connectors are all clean and properly seated.

What kind of power supply are you using? I(f youve formatted and continued this problem, spyware is doubtfully the answer.

So what are the advantages of water cooling?

lotsa cooling hehe

Posted by Ibizadreamer AG on Aug-02-2005 04:58:

I really really need that now!

Posted by Matt on Aug-02-2005 05:20:

if all your apps are hogging equal amounts of cpu (not just one app hogging 97%) then I would try switching in some different ram or check your cpu temperatures.

also, check your bios settings and make sure your voltage settings are right, etc.

Posted by onceler on Aug-02-2005 16:27:

run memtest32 to check your ram. do you have any other AMD cpu you can stick in there to make sure it is not that? see if you can find some sort of "burn-in" test program that will stress the various componenets.
