Coming back into the Trance scene after about 2.5 years...

OK. Let me just say that as of now, I'm completely lost in the Trance scene. I haven't been downloading or buying much new material sicne the last DJ Tisto 'Concert', in 2004. During 2003 to the present, I pretty much stopped collecting music. I got broadband in late 2004 & burned a lot of stuff. Now, I'd like to know this:

What's really & truly worth getting from the last 2.5 years? What would you consider the 'top 100' Trance albums/mixes/live sets of 2003, 2004, & this year (so far)? I love Trance, but don't know where to start now, after not keeping up since 2003. Has much changed since then? Is DJ Tisto, PvD, AvB, & Ferry Corsten still out on top?

Thanks for any info...

On the prog house front, you may have missed Nikola Gala's 'Swing 2 Harmony'.

Here's a summary of what happened in the trance scene:

Unfortunately, these last 2 years seem to be recognised by most people as the continuation of the downfall of trance. Not necessarily in terms of popularity, Tiesto has been packing some stadiums, but in terms of quality. From the point of view of most epic trancers, it lost the "special feeling" from the 1999 era whatever that might have been. The new rising stars of the last 2 years have been bedroom-producers armed with software synths only with the goal of getting their tracks on ASOT.

Yeah, that radio show from Armin is still going on, over 200 episodes now. Dunno exactly how it has been sounding lately, haven't listened to it in over a year i think. But many people have been criticising it very harshly, as it appears to have sucked the entire trance scene into some boring shit that hasn't evolved anything in a few years. Or something like that.

So basically, Armin, Andy Moor, Markus Schulz, Gabriel & Dresden are the big names now (Armin and Markus more as dj's, Andy and G&D more as producers). Last time I checked their sound sucked, but you might like it, dunno. PvD, Tiesto and Ferry all have kept the superstar status, but haven't done anything particularly remarkable. PvD bashes ASOT trance on the press only to play it in his sets. Tiesto is doing this series of In Concert, popular as fuck, not anything special musically tho. Ferry has been a bit more low-profile, but i think he released a compilation recently.

That would have been a shorter answer than your post. Clearly you dont like trance so you wont help the original poster very much.

i don't see you trying to help the guy either by listing tunes or by telling your version of what happened.

and i like trance:

Cosmic Baby, Leftfield, Orbital, Microglobe, Union Jack, Humate

Danjo & Styles have done some good work since you've been gone.

Not much else that decent really, Active Sight (M.I.K.E alias) made a good track last year. On the progressive scene, Lolo is decent, Sultan is pretty good and Deep Dish have done some good remixes + releases.

1999/2000 seemed to belong to the big 4
oakey, tiesto, pvd, ferry

2001/2002 we saw bog bog prog largely displace this good ole' trance style, but we also saw the glory days of ASOT, from my POV Armin van Buuren picked up the trance torch in those years.

2003/early 2004 ASOT was getting stale, again from my point of view, it seems trance would have almost gone exticnt if it werent for the explosion of gabriel and dresden. Their belonging to the trance category is debateable, but to me they picked up trance after Armin dropped it.

From there it seemed to shift towards Markus Shulz, "McProg" took over as the big trance flavor, I like to call it "Twinkle Prog" because to me this music sounds like that same bog bog prog from 2001/2002 except with a stupid twinkly sound slapped on top of it. This style got old VERY fast, it was refreshing at first though. I would say McProg dropped the trance torch before 2004 was half over.

After that I havent really found anyone who I can view as the next carriers of trance, it seemed to just fragment and dissolve, there are good tracks scattered about but no artists or songs that seem to define the current era.

Which trance hero will pick up the genre next?

There was something special about 1999 /00, it may have been that no one had heard tracks like out of the blue, gouryella etc before and the sound just blew peoples heads off.

Maybe it was the ecstasy, pills were fucking good then.

Maybe it was the gatecrasher explosion in the Uk and other clubs in the UK like godskitchen coming into the scene.

Maybe it was when oakenfold played amazing sets with amazingly good music that you just knew was being played by oakenfold.

Maybe its because there was no unwritten rules and dj's like judge jules would play house right through to trance in a set.

Maybe no one heard those melodies before and now there just simply isnt much more melodies people get that pleasure of hearing for the first time ever.

So many tracks oakey played for example that if anyone else played them, it just didnt sound the same as if oakenfold played them. Sounds crazy but true. Nowadays he plays fucking rubbish music 9 / 10. I dont mean tracks he plays but the way he plays them. Rubbish.

Van dyks sets were full of energy and he was always bang on with each track he played. Now he just doesnt create that same feeling for me, probably because he admits himself there just arent enough good trance tracks out there.

Whatever it was 1999 / 00 will never be recaptured again. Not until trance clears out the dead wood and deletes its Reason / Frutiyloops or whatever programs templates that so many producers obviously have saved as the sound is the exact same in every production.

1999/2000 was a very bittersweet moment in history

Things like the .com bubble, massive wave of computers, bill clinton.

The general mood of the population was different, people were much more optomistic about life, changes were much more drastic, the feeling that all people from all over the world could come together to enjoy each others company seemed so much more feasable back then.

I don't think that trance music exploding and all the things in history about 1999 happening during the same time were a co-incidence.

People are so much more scared now, so much less trusting, there is no overwhelming faith that things are going to be OK, we are now in an era of uncertainty and fear, and I think that this is reflected in our music.

That is just my guess on why 1999 was so special for so many people, I was a freshman in high school and was therefore too young to experience it for myself.

I read alot about a similar thing happening with music in the 60's. The stars just aren't right for such a thing to happen right now,
