Can you guys "see" music?

I saw this thread on futureproducers and thought I'd bring it here.

When I close my eyes and listen to a track, I see the fruity sequencer for the drums/percs and the synths in piano roll. Crazy, I obviously spend WAY too many hours producing... sometimes I even wake up in the morning with a fruity sequencer in my head. LOL

But what the post was about was basically if you see images when you listen to music. Especially trance.

When I smoke myself silly I can see colorful patterns in my brain that create twisting, aura-circled landscapes. Panning really makes the image bright, and condensed synths in certain frequency ranges and certain spacing of instruments makes it even more prominent.

Next time you smoke (or maybe you don't even need to), listen to Avalanche (Yahel Mix)... the song has created the most vivid visualizations I've ever experienced.

Most good Psytrance creates the same effects.

I know a few other people who also experience these images, and we've tried to figure out why, but can't.

Cheers.

I can tastes kick drums. But only if they sound sweet if that makes sense. Synysthesisiaisisiaiasia or something.

Synaesthesia is a harmless condition in which people experience perceptual sensations that are not shared by most other members of the population. People with synaesthesia may experience colours with letters, sounds, or words; they may experience shapes with tastes, or smells with sounds, to name a few varieties. It has a biological origin and is found in at least 1 in 2000 people.

COngratulations- you are a thrillseekers track

hmmm cant say i see images...but i definitely know what you mean by being able to see a track laid out channel by channel in FL...just goes to show how developed your ears have become for this type of music... I think one of the first ways to producing great music is being able to listen to a song, and dissect it in your head...

well i guess i sorta see images...if its an amazingly beautiful track with lush pads and awesome supersaw chords....i kinda feel like im flying in the clouds

When im high i always expirence music not only through hearing it but also visually...espacially dreamy chill or prog and banging psy.
making music while high is lots of fun...everything sounds so good...hehe...

In one of my dreams (about a month ago) i saw Nu-Nrg - Supersonik Way playing in a reason sequencer, it was very triangular.

Azza Robinson, I got the same thing. Though I'm more of a sober guy... ;D

I don't think it's Synaesthesia (it sounds cool to have ;D), but when I'm in the right mood and listen to music, I can see the different layers of the track. They take shape in cubes, circles. They change color, size, and what have you, when the vibe of the music changes, and so on.

I can also see a scenario take place when listening to tunes. That's how I name my tunes too. For Quintet of a Meadow, for example, I saw a Meadow in front of me. Trees a little here and there, green green grass all over the place. It's a sweet scene...

For every tune I produce I know what the music video would look like. What will happen in it etc. Sometimes I take it the other way around. I make up a scene, and then try to discribe it, through music.

Nice thread you've got here btw.

That's strange; I never knew synthesasia was a biologically inherited trait. I thought everyone could experience. I can't listen to music without having some image to go with it. My mind usually attributes one colorful sensation to each instrument of a tune, and they all move around or do whatever in harmony. Wow that description actually doesn't come close to the real feeling.. it's a lot more than that. I didn't know I was 1 in 2000 and I'm having a hard time believing that. I'm sure anyone with an open mind can do just the same.

Posted by lucas ss on Aug-07-2005 03:49:

i usually see my own version of a "winamp visualization" in my head.

i usually "feel" music more than i see it. expecially when an especially good trance or breaks track is playing and i'm anticipating my favorite parts of the track and when it hits, my spine and/or my whole body tingles and i'm totally lost in the moment and i just "let he beauty wash over me"...knowing full well it will be over soon, yet so thankful it's there....

i know i'm not alone with this...

Dog Running

I think of colours when I hear a song, but I don't see any images. What's interesting though is that I can hear a tune when I see a repetetive pattern. Take for example, that running dog on this post. I can hear a tone when his legs are up, then a lower pitch when he takes a step.

Wow, that's cool... when I read that and looked at the dog, I understood exactly what you were talking about.

you know, i googled synaesthesia, and come to find out what it meant , then i put taht in my sig awhile ago because i thought it was so innovative to name a track this...

+1 for the ppl who name their songs thoughtfuly!

Posted by dj jasonF on Aug-08-2005 08:20:

i can see the color of sound if that counts... but synasthesia would be cool

What a strange, strange thread...

guys, go easy on the drugs please. You think people who stand in a rice field all day and plow tons of it on a 15 hour working day go to bed and visualise wholegrain before they fall asleep?

All I know is that you should see music when you look at the cones of your speakers. Try it, it's a technique used for mastering. Waveforms are important too, and the dynamics of a compressor, actualy quite a lot, but nothing you need to close your eyes about...!

Actualy, come to think of it, when I listen to music I see pink elefants crawling up rainpipes with little roses between their toes. Then a spotty dragon, a piecefull, freandly dragon says 'hello' to the mailman who is just walking slowly over softly flowing hills. While Monica Lewinsky is lying on the ground in the featus position screaming 'I am a sick man! Help me! Get this profesional chess player off my back!'.

It's quite debilitating.

kind regards,

Charly Darwin

P.S. On a more serious note. I have seen many people completely f*cked up on drugs. People wobbling violantly on a dancefloor. Some guy diagnosed with schitsophrenia. And all that for something that isn't all that much fun. My advice would be to have a good time without drugs, or you won't be able to have a good time without prety quick. And believe me you won't see it coming, and it happens to the best of us.

Ohhh.... We got ourselves a sceptic? Splendid!

For your information, I don't do drugs, nor will I ever. But I do visualize to the music I hear. Sometimes, when my mind drifts away completely, I can tell the tunes story. I kinda see the different elements as people, places, and so on. It's hard to explain, so I won't bother putting it to words.

I was refering to the guys in the thread talking about MDMAand all that. But tell me, was that bad advice?

Glad you take your responsibility. Now that we've cleared that matter:

Personally I have no idea as to how someone can possibily think that drugs are a good thing. It usually goes like this:

"alcohol causes more accident than drugs those"

Well duh! How can that be? Maybe there are more people drinking alcohol than doing drugs?

But that's another topic entirely.

Posted by dj jasonF on Aug-08-2005 20:33:

well it is true that alcohol is generaly worse than most drugs..
but since when you have to drink to see weird things?
