Australia's new SOCCER A-LEAGUE
What are your thoughts on this new league fellas?
I personally reckon anythings better than the NSL format, MAN THAT SUCKED
Wonder if this will take off and be as huge as they hope it to be
better then NSL, yes.
successful as they want it to be, no.
they've got a few big stars though
ie. Dwight York gonna be playing for Sydney FC...
I reckon that'll spark some interest, I can only hope as I think quality Soccer is needed in Australia
Perth Glory will die up the arse.
The ads all over the tv are cool...but all it will take is one riot and all the hard work will be undone.
Personally i don't follow soccer but i hope this takes off because i want Australia in the world cup for once (maybe then i';ll take interest)
dwight york playing for sydney??
thats cool... i didnt know that!!
maybe there is hope yet!
*waits for paulie to come in and bash the a-league*
I'm going to go to Sydney FC matches when they start, i think the whole organisation deserves the support of the fans, as long as they can deliver a decent product. All the signs look promising, and the potential is certainly high, but i'm slightly pessimistic about the sustainability its going to have.
It will be nice to have a team to go and support that is actually from where I live, rather than some European team that i just decided i liked.
sydney look pretty good on paper, they have a very potent attack but yorke has been a bit off in the pre-seasons (apparently)
i dont think it will be as big as they hope, just because the competition with other sports is too great and there arent enough people in australia to supply the fan base needed to survive. (that and alot of people might still think that soccer is a fags game)
I don't care what tricks they have up their sleeves and how hyped up this competition is, Australian soccer is and always will be complete shit.
one of my friends plays for central coast, so ill support him
I rekon its alot better because it removes the nationalities owning one side. It will take time (years) for it to develop so I wont expect miracles. At least some big business men are backing it up such as Frank Lowey and such.
Another bonus is Australia joining the Asian's for qualifications for the world cup which should be more interesting.
Aren't all you guys meant to be calling it football now?
the good thing about A-League is that no team has a strong ethical backing (like the NSL).
hopefully it will all go well, its got fairly cheap ticket prices so should get some crowds. but i dont know if it will last more than a couple of seasons *fingers crossed*
its hard for soccer to be successful in a country that already has strong support for so many sports (AFL, Rugby, League, Cricket)
Soccer never was and never will be 'big' here. Which sucks, but I prefer the European leauges anyway.
Good luck to the new leauge anyway. Got to give them credit for 'trying'.
The good 'ol NSL days may be long gone.......but those were the glory days....aaaaa the memories LOL Nothin' like a bit of rivalry and hooliganism

best of luck to all concerned, i hope this is the new beginning soccer australia needs. but, at the end of the day, liverpool & england > australia and thats all i care about
As a former player in the NSL in the early nineties with West Adelaide Sharks, i really do hope the league succeeds. They are certainly giving themselves a fair shot at it. So if this doesnt take off after a couple of seasons, im afraid it never will. So get out there and support if you are at all into the beautiful game.
looking forward to it, already been to two sydney home games and the atmosophere was great !
bought my season tickets today

I'll be waiting for the first riot to occur, it'll happen eventually, it always does.
That said, security is intense at Olympic Park.

not much hype out there at all, and with such a long lead in time, i've lost interest long before the league even starts. Even the strips look very bland. Hopefully I'll be able to drag some friends along to a couple of games but I don't hold much hope for the league lasting.
