Stu Cox - ‘LIMITED EDITION’ :: technical uplifting/pumping trance mix

It’s been about 4 months since the last one, so I thought it was about time for a new trance mix… so here it is!

63 mins of tunes covering uplifting/pumping/tech trance etc, they’re not all the newest tunes in the world but there are a few tracks I got my hands on just after I did my last mix which I really wanted to include

As with my last trance mix, I’ve tried to vary the style of mixing and technical work as much as the music itself so that it’s not just one tune after another, but this time trying to maintain a better flow, staying more ‘true’ to the style of music in my mixing technique.

I’ve also structured it so that it drops back down a level at the end, hopefully leaving you feeling relaxed and ‘complete’ instead of just wanting to bosh another gram speed and put on a happy hardcore cd or something…

I’ve included bits of layering, sampling and ‘meshing’ tunes together (all taken on a bit further from my last trance demo) to give something a bit different and use the music in a slightly different way

That’s more than enough blabbering, here’s the tracklist…

alright stu i've heard way too much hipe about your mixes so i decided to give them a try I'm pretty critical when it comes to advanced mixing and beat matching so I will tell you what I think

Posted by Dee Fox on Aug-11-2005 22:58:

Ok heard the mix all in all it was very good...I enjoyed a few of the song selections you had in the mix, especially Purple Haze Adrenaline difintely vital to vinyl...Most the transitions were very clean however there were a few particulary at 14:37 of your mix..It seemed like you killed the track too soon without gruadually decaying it using the mid and high nobs on the mixer...Also there were other minor errors when it came to advanced mixing that you didn't follow with, especially when it had to do with killing a track within the proper transition period...for instance you being a producer you know about the 32 count rule that all records are produced with..every 32 counts there is a significant change in the melodic/position of the records sound in which it is ideal for mixing...in some parts you would cut this too soon, however i did not hear the contrary of holding a mix too long from you which was good. The beat matching was no problem I heard one minor mishap however it wasn't too significant and therefore I don't even remember where it was exactly.
All in all
8/10 song selection
9/10 beat matching
7.2/10 advanced mixing technique

Take it as you want

good shit... but my 2 cents are

02 Purple Haze - 'Adrenaline'
(w/ Fictivison & C-Quence - 'Symbols')

^^both great tracks, but the hard bass line at about 7:30 all but drowns out the Symbols track... so it almost seems like you left the volume up a tad and didnt notice it...

i was looking forward to a fade into symbols solely but it didnt happen... but in all very good.. i do listen to it often.. thanks and keep it up.. i look fwd to yoru next one...

i like this mix, very pumping - solid basslines and smooth mixing

the track selection is vibrant also- good tunes in there, this mix is a must for anyone trying to redefine trance - good mix of everything in there. though mostly tech etc, i enjoyed it.

keeping an eye out for future mixes

good stuff!

Cheers for the detailed feedback guys, really helps me to move forward with what I'm doing

Dee Fox: Always good to see a big block of text in a reply, shows that someone's really thought about it

With regard to killing tracks too soon, I think once or twice I decided to take a track out slightly sooner than I should have in order to keep the mix in (usually if I had 3 tracks going, taking one out makes it a lot easier to keep it together!). The example you gave at 14:30 was actually a 2 bar beatless break in the track I was mixing out of at 14:32, hence the perc suddenly going from that track - you can year it come back in at 14:33... I agree it would have been better if I saw that ahead and found a way around it (personally I blame Mef/Acute for making the track like that )!

You then mentioned 'advanced mixing' and referred to the '32 count rule' which kinda sounded like you were repeating what you'd said earlier unless I missed something? Tbh that's not really something I'd describe as 'advanced mixing', it's just phrasing which I think I stuck to pretty well... although as much as I agree most of the time the mix sounds better like that, personally I hate the idea of any 'rules' to do with DJing whatsoever - the 'rules' say you shouldn't do technical mixing with trance, they say your mixes should be bassline-to-bassline and you should just keep to one genre in a mix... fuck that

I'd be interested to know what kind of thing (both present in this mix and not present) you'd consider as part of the advanced mixing mark you gave me. Thanks for the marks, I'm glad you liked the mix on the whole and thanks again for the feedback.

Zewad: Glad you liked the mix. Loads of people have commented on the Symbols layer over Adrenaline so I think it's safe to say it didn't work as well as it could have done. The idea was for the Symbols lead to just sit with Adrenaline and work with the Adrenaline bassline, giving it a different feel (as the Adrenaline chord sequence is different from the Symbols chord sequence, but the Symbols lead still musically fits with the Adrenaline chord sequence), so the Adrenaline bassline is supposed to still be there in full force with the Symbols bass pretty much taken out... and hence as just a layer (shown by the "w/" on the tracklist, meaning 'with'), not a full track I didn't want to mix right the way into Symbols.

Btw, I don't actually think about it in quite this much depth when I'm doing it that would be very sad - I just imagine how I want it to work and give it a go...

And I've just talked on and on again... hope what I've said gives a better idea of the kind of thing I'm trying to achieve, so if anyone's got anymore thoughts along these kinds of lines then please throw them my way, cheers

i agree. its boring and stale if mixing is learned and implemented through textbook rules. if we all did that we would all be the same dj. everyone has his or her own style. and you get my respect if you dont have to voluntarily count beats or do any technical shit. itll come naturally; just go out there and mix.

anyway, you mix is outstanding. i didnt hear anything wrong with any of the transitions between tracks. i used to think that was so important to be a good dj. obviously, there is an importance to good transitions but lately ive finally been beliveing that song selection can make or break a mix. if there are 10 epic trance songs one after another i get bored. and the epic quality of those songs is lost because of the total saturation of the syle in the mix.

i agree with you again that mixing is best with a variety of style of music. progressive house (my fav type o' house), techno, trance... i find that mixes these three styles allow for such a wide array of emotions. the progression you can create with a variety of style is unlimited.

perhaps ive been blabbling. sorry. but your mix is smooth and tight. song selection is great too. good work. ill keep an eye out for some new stuff from you. if you can please check out my mix located on this site. its got a variety of style like i was talking about.

later

Cheers again guys.

Variety and something a little bit different is what it's all about

Sorry I stopped your mix after 15Min cause it sounded so awfull to my ears. The 2 mashups at the beginning (killa & purple haze+symbols) didn't work very well imo. The first transition was a bit odd . And that the same for the second and the third one :/ Melodies are mixed together during your transitions and it doesn't sound very good.

It's great you tried to do something different but you experienced too much things and the mixing at the end is far from being smooth.

Haha thanks for your honesty. Tbh I'm surprised there weren't more people who said that. I personally really liked the way Killa worked with LTD... but it does make LTD sound really different which I suppose can be weird at first (even Mike himself says he likes it now after a couple of listens) if you knew the tune in the first place.

I do agree about Symbols though - although the two tunes theoretically match musically, they don't quite work... mainly I think because Adrenaline has such a dark feel and Symbols has quite a light feel (as I said before).

I appreciate I do need to get better at telling which tracks will work well together for that kind of thing, over and above just using tracks in matching keys.

But at the same time I feel to a certain extent (however small) there's a tendancy for people to reject hearing 2 tracks layered up, just because they're not used to it and it kinda tends to be considered as something that "shouldn't be done". I think this particularly applies to tracks you know which end up being given a totally different feel when put together with another track (usually because the bassline is different so the melody seems to move in different ways), which again you may not be expecting or be used to... but to me this doesn't mean these things are "wrong", just because it doesn't sound how people expect it to. If you hadn't heard the track before then it's quite possible you'd interpret it differently (because you wouldn't have a preconceived idea of how it should sound!)

I think i'm now just delving into musical philosophy or something

I think this latter point is probably quite minor, but I'm certain it plays a part. Although I definately agree that picking my tracks more carefully would help me to make something that more people will like.

I think I've probably just repeated things I've said several times before, but maybe worded them a bit better this time What I'd really like now is to hear people's thoughts on what I've just said - so please say somethng

and i've just realised nearly every paragraph in this post starts with 'I' ... often followed by 'think' which is never a safe activity!

Thats okay. There isnt a rule against that.
I didnt think the mash up sounded bad. It may just seem out of place because were not used to hearing the two together. I kinda liked it. Who knows...

Posted by Derka on Aug-17-2005 20:54:

Sounds good! The only thing that seems off thus far was what was previously said about 7:30 how one of the sounds drowns out the other. Other then that im @ 21:15 and all seems well
