Shivers is Armin Van Buuren's first artist album (we'll discount 2003's 76 as that would be like saying Sasha's first full-length album was The QAT Collection), yet despite the wait, and a plethora of guest vocalists and producers as a support cast, there's nothing remotely groundbreaking, and very little original, to speak of. Opening with "Wall Of Sound", featuring Justine Suissa and the aptly named "Empty State" sporting Mic Burns' deeper tones, the dreamy and ethereal approach to their delivery can do little to shore up the fact that they're drab and predictable songs. There's even former Genesis vocalist Ray Wilson popping up on the breakbeat-ish "Gypsy" - need I say more? Surprisingly this album was two years in the making; recorded in Amsterdam, San Francisco (with Gabriel & Dresden), Miami (with Markus Schulz) and New York (with Nadia Ali of Iio who features on "Who Is Watching"). Armin's pairing with G&D on the rousing "Zocalo" is actually one of the album's few highs; the other in collaboration with fellow Dutchmen Remy and Roland Klinkenberg on the proggy "Bounce Back". Armin is quick to declare that Shivers is a major step for him into full songwriting, having co-written most of the lyrics. A brave move that whilst perhaps satisfying his own craving, fails to offer anything new to the creative process. As a DJ the sellout tours and worldwide bookings speak for themselves, however making the transition to the recording studio is not always as smooth. People may pay top dollar to hear a DJ spin, yet not nearly as many will pay a similar price for a DJs CD. Stick to what you do best mate, play other people's music |
can't wait to listen to Shivers.... i do really like Armin

Most of the TA's are so predictable, somebody writes that the album sucks and they think the review is brilliant
I bet some of you haven't listened to it entirely.
The reviewer obviously hasn't done his homework. AVB produced some mind-blowing stuff in the past when he was younger, his own stuff AND remix work. The sentiments about this particular album may be true (I haven't heard it so I don't know), but to say "stick to what you do best" is BS. And its not a "Transition into the studio" becaue he's been producing since he was about 14, correct me if I'm wrong?

I agree I don't like much of what he's done lately (except for "shivers", and the KvA mix of some vocal track last year (forgot the name
), and "slipstream" and "another day" and "from the heart"). I just think the total lack of a mention of his production-past, as if this is his first batch of tunes ever, shows that the reviewer really didn't know his stuff...

| Originally posted by Floorfiller i don't think many can argue that armin doesn't have the potential to be a great producer, but what he's been producing the last 2-3 years is just crap. and what's worse is that he actually thinks he's improving or obtaining some great level of artistic expression... |
"i've been really going downhill as a producer lately... pick up my new cd!"

I couldn't agree more with the BBC's review. I first heard Shivers about a month ago, and when I listened to it, I was like "this is Armin?" I've listened to it numerous times, and every time I hear it, I have the same feelings about it. Armin has produced some amazing tracks and done some incredible remixes, as for this album, its just not what I personally like to hear from Armin.

Shivers is an alright album, the best out of this whole cd imo would be ZoCalo! The rest of the this cd is pretty chill cept for control freak and serenity. but its not that bad. I mean i know Armins production has gone downhill a bit, comparing to communications, blue fear, sound of goodbye etc etc... not including all his great remixes in the past too.. but he's still one of my all time fave djs because of the fact that he's been around for such a long time and still keeps up with his ASOT show even though he didnt have to, and that when you see him live, he's never f*cked up and always smiling! sooo those oare my 2 cents |

but im not trying to be stubborn or anything, i just think its rare for producers to keep coming up with new things.
Glad to see that most people think Zocalo as one of the best tracks of the Album as i love it
.It has so much feeling and is so mellow,i can't get enough of this.I'm waiting for the album cd just for this.Brilliant, just brilliant
