I ****ING HATE my whitelabel!!!
I made a thread earlier about my whitelable sucking at high frequencies but now it's just sucking ass all together. Its REALLY pissing me off because I spent a lot of money on what I was hoping to be a top of the line needle only to have it sucking ass within 3 months. I could only afford to buy a second one next week so I though it was going to suck having a really shitty stanton needle that came with my old table as my second needle for a while but who would have imagined me HATING to mix into the table with the whitelabel because it SUCKS SO MUCH.
The $20 stanton needle is kicking the whitelabel's $100 ass! I tried cleaning the contacts and everything. Its not a dirty record beacuase even brand new records are sounding like shit while the stanton plays thems them without a hitch. I was thinking I just may have been unlucky and got a crap one but Im fucking pissed that im going to have to buy ANOTHER fucking needle already.
It can't be the speakers or the mixer because I took out my old little amp that has a headphone jack, no going through any mixer or anything just straight from the needle to my headphones and it sounded the same. I really want to buy a diffrent needle because I don't trust the whitelabel anymore. I wanted the ortofon's but I heard they really wear your records and I'm really only looking to buy an all in one headshell type needle.
This sucks so fucking much, all I've been doing all summer is saving for my tables, saving for my mixer, saving for the needles and now when I thought I was finally done this week and could finally return to just buying records my needle craps out and I have to spend all of this weeks check on 2 fucking needles that I don't even know are going to be whitelabels or not and then wait another 2 weeks to finally buy my first record in over a month.
[/rant]
Guys I need to know if theres a way to get my money or ANY money out of this stupid shit whitelabel back. And then if I should get the ortofons or the whitelabels. I really don't want to buy 2 more whitelabels in fear that they will crap out on me and that I will have to constantly be taking extra special care with them and I don't want my records to get torn up with the ortofons. The main reason I don't want anything else is because I hate hooking up the cartridge to the headshell but if I MUST get one like that then I will
To sum all this shit and giant rant.
I simply need a needle that I KNOW will last long not having to be extra special careful with it all the time and will sound excellent
This right here just shot up my expectations for the ortofons
"Therefore, the Ortofon disco cartridges are equipped with cantilevers made from aluminum tube with increased wall thickness. Special attention has also been paid to the attachment of the bearing and the design of the bearing itself. This means that rough treatment will neither damage the cartridge nor degrade its stability."
That was my main concern just throw right out the window.
ive had whitelabels for 2 yrs now...havent changed the stylus or anything yet...TOP NOTCH...
a local dj who uses ortofons is thinking of buying some..THEIR that good..
So do you think I just got a dud?
iv heard of some people getting duds from when they were first made...
hopfully your luck changes m8
When I get back from work tonight I will put up a sample of the same exact record on the whitelabel then the stanton so you can see how bad it is.
Have you tried changing the weight on your tone arm? I've had Whitelabels for a while too and I've only had to replace one of the stylus and that's just because some dummy bent it.
Heres that sample. The first take is the crappy stanton needle and the second is the whitelabel. You will hear a little bit of the same noise thats plauging the whitelabel with the stanton because my recording software, but trust me, when the stanton is playing that same song, I can turn up the volume in my headphones all the way and there is no distortion at all. You can even hear the stanton hum when I take it off just to let you know how crappy it truly is.

It's the one titled Whitelabel sucks of course.
u prolly have too much weight on em bro...the whitelabels are pretty heavy...put down the weight and the height @ 3...thats where i have em...have no problems...anti skip 0
I have the height at 0, the weight at 2, and the anti skate at 0.
so... try his suggestion and set the weight and height to 3.

Look at the needle and see if it's bent at all. The second sample sounds like mine did before I realized it was done for.
If that's not it I don't think there's any fixing your problem, I think you definitely got a bad needle (or you somehow damaged it w/out knowing). My suggestion would be to contact the people you bought your needle from and let them know of your problem. Don't let this discourage you from buying another White label, though, it's a great needle. Just keep in mind that there's never been a product introduced to the market that hasn't sold a faulty unit.
The stylus seems fine to me. I'm really hesitant right now for buying another one or just the Ortofon. Thanks for that reply though, I think I can actually go to bed now haha.
damn that sounds so bad... It's fubar fo sho. I had a m35s back in the day that sounded just like that. It was a defective cart as well. Of the 6 shure cartridges i bought over the years, i only had one that was bad out of the box. As for whitelabels, i own two, im only using one for recording. Both of mine sound great, but in my experience, the styli break very easily. Thus I'm using M44Gs the past 7 months and i love em more than the whitelabels.
The first pair of needles I ever bought were the Shure M44-7's. If you refuse to go with the Whitelabels, I highly recomment them. Yes, you will have to mount them to your technics headshells but it's not rocket science, trust me.
This got me into critical listening AND RECORDING. I've recorded a track from a new record at 24/96 using both a m44g and whitelabel. When listening, i switched back and forth, i honestly couldn't hear any major difference. So i decided to go ahead and record from both carts and i've noticed noise like pops were in the opposite phase. This had me wondering, i quickly checked the wiring on my carts and tried two seperate whitelabels and m44gs and came with teh same results. I then took the left channel recordings and cropped them to match and replace the right channel with the left from the opposite cart to show you a side by side comparison.

listening to this in my headphones makes me go mad, but it does create a cool noise canceling and phazer effects when my earcups face each other.
HAHA Thats nuts.
Anyways I'm thinking about going down to my record store and just getting a replacement stylus. I'm going to ask them if I can return it the next day if it dosn't work. If it is the whole cartridge then I might get the M44-7 although I'm really liking the whole interchangeable stylus tips on the Ortofons though. I could buy a very basic model and then when that tip wears out I can buy a Nightclub or Elektro.
just bring the cart down to the shop and see if you can check it out there.
Yeah, in a perfect world they could let me switch out for a new one or a diffrent needle.
Well I just got back and they said I can't return needles no matter what. I'm going to call Shure tomorrow and see what they have to say though.

What was that you played?
And yeah sounds like a problem there.
But I do know a lot of people with Whitelabels without any problem but they are on the more fragile side it appears
The song thats playing is "Adam Johnson - Four Squares"
