-- R.I.P. Napster
Just a little something sayin how much i think everyone will miss the dearly departed napster..... Is this the start of the downfall of the mp3? I think (although unfortunate) the authorities will now clamp down on mp3 distribution on the net. After the napster ruling, the authorities will be looking out for the likes of audiognome & audiogalaxy and will probably go thru the same shit with them aswell
Although sites like this can generally remain untouched so-long as all the music is ripped from vinyl (next-to-none copyright laws on vinyl) or released on mp3
What do you lot think will happen to the mp3?
Peace
I don't believe mp3 will vanish, just because there already are alternatives for napster. IMash is one of them. Not only can you exchange mp3, but movies and other programmes too.
Furthermore: if such a company is based in a country with none, or just a few internet-laws, nothing can be done until these laws are made. This usually consumes a lot of time, so I'm not really worried about mp3's future.
Copyright laws apply wherever they are in the world thats what im on about
i dont think the mp3 will ever vanish all together, its just that in a few years its gonna b much harder to get them simply because there wont be the alternatives to napster once the artists lawyers find these alternatives...
Peace
Well, the not so popular (yet) gnutella, that was out a while, and made by the Winamp creators, Nullsoft, used direct connection between users.. So if i connected to a random person, I would also connect to the users that he was connected to.. Users only need the software and no central server or something.. It would be impossible to delete the program at all the peoples homes if it got popular, so it is quite an interesting possibility..
Peace
HELL NO! MP3s are here to stay and they're no way they can stop them. Also, Napster still has a chance cause the same court ruled against the VCR when it was first introduced. The only thing that would stop MP3 is a virus that targets MP3s.
i hope Napster doesn't die out on me. I get all of my Mp3s from there, and I don't like the way gnutella works (or I just don't know how to use it). anyways, what are some alternatives to Napster that I could try out?
Thanks
alternatives
From what i've tried i would suggest using either audiogalaxy (www.audiogalaxy.com) or the IMesh program;
And in reply to the thought that mp3's will disappear, NEVER; in my opinion mp3's are here to stay; only 2 problems that i can foresee are the following:
1. The self destructing mp3's that are currently under development at IBM labs (i think); what happens is that when a cd is ripped a code is transcribed into the mp3 created. This code then allows a user to listen to the mp3 a couple of times before it is deleted automatically.
2. The advent of DVD audio; someone is goin to have to figure out how to rip of these things (providing that the music companies decide to go with this format) and make a suitable compressed version; sort of like the mp3's of DVD audios...
Anyhow both these apparent problems are still many years away so happy ripping/burning everyone!!

Just check this out

Its all about audiogalaxy replacing napster with ease
GreetZz
Even though the RIAA will try and get rid of these things - alternatives will always pop up and be able to "crack" ( i use that term loosely) what ever the puppets at IBM are coming up with.
Even though Microsoft is writing piracy protection into it's next operating systems, people will figure out ways around it. It's actually already written into WindowsME, but wasn't utilized - probably because MS did realize there were legal mp3's out and that they would lose massive business from future purchasers of the worst operating system ever before they were willing to accept that Napster might actually disappear.
Just keep your Win98/2000/ME machine in good health for now. Things aren't bad yet. Plus the Essential Mixes and live shows that we download will still be pretty open since they aren't ripped from an CD.
Don't know if this is the right thread to ask this, but are there any of the file-sharing programs that will work when you're behind a HTTP/FTP-proxy?? I ask, cause I'm fed up with installing this and that, only to find out it doesn't work. After all we all know how an M$-Windows-system performs when a lot of programs have been installed/uninstalled.
It's just so frustrating when you lot suggests audiogalaxy, IMesh, gnutella etc. and I can't use any of them
Replacements to Napster (JUST IN CASE):
Audio Galaxy (looks to be most promising) http://www.audiogalaxy.com
BearShare (a Gnutella based program, it's ok http://www.bearshare.com
CuteMX (was a good program till they stopped it for awhile, now it's back and better than ever...but I can never get it to download
If anybody has the installation file or gets it to download say something) http://www.cutemx.com
IMESH (sucks, don't even try to get it) http://www.imesh.com
Scour (I think alot of people like this, but I don't see why. I thought it sucked compared to CuteMX. Give it a try if u want) http://www.scour.com
BUT NAPSTER IS STILL THE BEST!

Did you know that Napster was originally found by some 17 year old kid? (who's nickname was Napster)
Bet that guy has made a fortune!
By the way: in an article I read (pop-)musicians where asked about there opinion according downloading mp3. Turns out most of them didn't even mind tracks of theirs being downloaded. Some even wanted people to.
Guess it's just that fucked-up Metallica band and this "dr." Dre ruinin' all the fun for us...
17 year old kid...u mean Shawn Fanning? If u goto the Napster website @ the top of it they have artists opinions of the whole MP3 scene.
But i only download trance mp3s lol and i guarantee not one trance artist would give a shit if u downloaded his or her shit becuase i download the mp3s then i buy the vinyl i dont see why mp3s are bad for electronic music because if it wasnt for mp3s i would never have discovered trance and electronic music. i understand why its bad for pop shit cuz there only profit is cd's but for most electronic base music its vinyl.....and full sets i know are not copyrighted so they should be allowed, there should be like a electronic music napster type program lol.....well thats my opinion.
What the hell?? Am I the only one who has been getting mp3s long before napster was even conceivable?? Does no one remember kermit which later changed to OTH?? I mean really, napster simply takes what was already there and makes it accessable to the average shmoe. The death of napster cannot and will not kill the mp3 community...because there is still IRC, and FTP sites...even if that somehow get killed off, I can still rip my friends CDs to mp3 and stil get free music..dont worry, mp3s will not leave, and as far as napster goes...sure, it would suck if it gets closed, but c'mon, it wont be the end of digital music..they can't stop that
I used to collect MP2's.
They sounded shitty, but that's the only copy I had of Dune - "Million Miles Away From Home" in 1996
MP2s - hell yea, I had a couple of MP2s back in the day, but of course deleted em when i got mp3 versions of em =]
mp4...???
I read somewhere that the mp4 was gonna arrive soon... It was supposed to be a lot smaller and actually have a winamp-style player built into the file. Thats what i heard, anyone know aything about um?
I dont think the mp3 community will dissapear completely, to be honest it would have been better if Rio hadnt have brought out the mp3 player. Although a very cool music player and everything (i own one) all it succeded in doing was grabbing the authorities attention and point them to the mp3... Think about it, before the mp3 player, there wasnt any bother about where u got ur mp3's from, coz no-one official knew about um!!
Peace
Anyway napster is dead, for us Belgian people, they gonna sue some people for using napster after they got a warning to stop copying, and starting from tomorrow they gonna use a special device which will locate a few thousands of users in one minuet that are downloading(they say),and I read in a newspaper that there was an agreement that they will shut down all acces to napster for european people, all fucked up people that decided that!
True...
But Napster made mp3 easy accessible and findable... I'll miss that.
Napster will turn into a subscription system one day, and probably die off. But what are they gunna do about all the 50 million people who have 400-500 mp3's each already, thats a hell of a lot of files to control. File sharing is here to stay.
