Charlie & The Chocolate Factory
Original with Gene Wilder
vs
Revised with Johnny Depp
saw the revised edition last night, and i have to say i wasnt really impressed at all. the original is a classic with songs and merry characters and where the poverty stricken look poverty stricken and the rich look like they're rich and well all the characters look like they should.
this new revised version doesnt. Violet coems with her mum to the factory instead of her dad and Violet is a karate expert kid who also chews lots of gum (WTF), Veruca is still obnoxious, but the original character was much more fitting. Verucas dad Mr Salt, was also much more fitting in the original version then this remake. Mike Teevee's character has been updated to him being a pc/shootemup freak instead of a Wild West cowboys and TV freak. Augustus looks like the original and is probably the only character a bit more suited because he talks more then fat fcuk did before
Johnny Depp as willy wonka is a bit of a freak really, forget the hot boy image that all the ladies put him into, he looks like some AIDS ridden Joker/Marilyn Manson character. Totally not working either, Gene wilder may have been a bit cookey, but much more suited to this roll.
the colours used are no-where near as effective and the people like slugworth and the eerieness about it all just isnt there, and instead Willy has a complex about his father whio was a dentist and its all pretty 'family orientated' and lame.
The oompaloompas songs are shit compared to the originals, and these new oompa's look more like indian dwarves then they do Oompa Loompa's.
It takes elements from the book and the old movie and moves them into a pretty horrid remake of this classic movie.
Soups gives this a big thumbs down..
but check it out to compare
p.s - i dont know why i wrote this, but i was bored at work!

needs moar original styles
they are totally different songs.
none of that oompa-oompa-dee-doo
nothing like that.
they sound daft punkish some of them
that was one of the cool ones, i expected them to break out with those skeleton suits in the Daft Punk film clip and hear cranking -
"AROUND THE WORLD... AROUDN THE WORLD.."
but mostly, twas shite
ive been waiting for this one for a while now.
gonna check it out with some mates at gold class.
its not meant to be as kiddish as the first one. this ones directed by tim burton who also made edward scissor hands so its meant to be a little odd and twisted, wonka was a bit more twisted in the novel and not always a happy chappy.
i heard they might be making another movie along thew lines of fear and loathing based on another of hunter s thompsons adventures.
fuk i dont know if any of that makes sense.
Dunno, maybe will watch it when it comes to DVD but its been reported that Johnny Depp will play in the new Jerry Bruckheimer produced film based on the game "Prince Of Persia"
Excited that Bruckheimer is gonna be behind it, now thats gonna be the shiznit!
Soups why didnt you invite an of your friends to the movies?

what would you expect its a tim burton film... have you seen his other work? im sure you have! always dark and moody!
although from what i ahve seen i agree its lost its way a little form the book.. but i guess thats how another interprets it all!!
the shorts i seen the deep does it well, but will have another opinion after i seen the movie!
i used to be shit scared of the tunnel boat scene, im tippin thats gonna scare a few in this movie aswell!
wrong.
its not scarey at all

soups you are spot on. i saw the new one in montreal last week and was very dissapointed. the original is an absolute classic, and the new one just has nothing to it at all. johnny depp is strangely bad, i thought he would make a great willy wonka but he was just left looking a like a michael jackson clone with an irritatingly high-pitched monotonous voice. gene wilder was perfect and had those cuttingly sarcastic lines that brought out wonka's general dislike of children, and callous disregard of the misfortunes that fell their way. depp comes across as indifferent, but lacks that extra bit of maliciousness that makes the original wonka's character so amusing rather than just weird.
and yes the oompa loompas, which made the original, are crap, and all have the exact same indian face, eliminating the community/wizard of oz feel of the originals and generally makes them much less endearing. the songs are crap too, and the whole synchronized dancing routines are a bit on the lame side.
the ending was overly corny as well, and the lack of the gobstopper 'test' (or some kind of creative equivalent) detracts from one of the main points of the original which was that wonka was trying to find somebody he could trust with his secret recipes and overall business, after his previous betrayal by factory worker spies. argh i could go on, but tim burton, shame shame shame. i expected much better!
