Best LAPTOP?

I'm in the market for a laptop... what company should I go with?

I've heard good things about IBM... and Compaq's laptops are really nice
But what would be the best buy?

sony vaio

Sony Vaio or Apple's PowerBook (yes, itz a MAC..but damn is it sweet!)
are really the only thingz you should look into

what a coincidence. i'm using my powerbook g4 titanium as i write this. lolz. funny stuff. the powerbook is better than the vaio. has better hardware. but if you're lookin' for a pc, the vaio's the way to go.

it'll cost ya around 4G's CDN.

Take mine, it's the best! It's an old Acer ... 133mhz Pentium1 ... 16 MB of slow RAM, unbelieveable 3GB of HD space (!), including the one and only OS - Win95 (!!!). The accu lasts for about half an hour ... excellent!!!
I'd sell it for $1000 ... shipping not included

the vaios are ok.

i love my compaq presario 1700.... its really cheap (for a laptop), has more equipment & options than the VAIO's, and has really loud built-in JBL speakers.... also has a DVD/CDRW drive hot-swappable with 3.5" floppy and zip drive.... 1 Ghz processor, 256 MB ram, ,20 Gig hard drive..... all for $1300 US.... IMO a lot better than the VAIO...

I'm sitting here now with a Dell pentium 3 800mhz, and I've never had any trouble with it Several people I've talked to have recommended Dell laptops. I mostly use a stationary though, so I don't know that much about it..

Do not get a Dell. Mine works ok but every week or so I have a new problem and everyone else that I work with (who has one) says the same. Mind you, they have excellent tech support but I think the quality of their laptops isn't as good as compaq, IBM, or Toshiba.

If I were you, I'd get a Toshiba...

ibm thinkpad t series is definitely the way to go

the best laptop ive ever used, and you can pick up the top of the line one for like $1400 on ebay

try one out, youll never go back

oh i agree those other laptops are good (ibm, dell, toshiba, sony).... but my compaq is just as good and costs hundreds less (brand new - not on ebay!).... and none of those other computers have a pro-sound soundsystem built-in (like my compaq), only a miniature pathetic speaker if anything at all.... and compaq has great customer svc. & warranty...

my only point here is if product "A" was just as good as product "B", wouldn't you buy the less expensive one?

I bought a Dell P3 450 four years ago and its never given me any bother, it was top of the range then and cost a fortune.
The tech support is great but Ive heard that their more standard laptops arnt anywhere near as good and frequently play up. Computers are funny like that, some run forever without missing a beat and other are better off in the bin.

I hear great things about the Sony Vaio.......my friend got one and he is very happy with his choice.

My brother just got a Dell Inspiron laptop.... Damn, that thing is sweet. But of course I'm also sitting in front of my hamster-powered box of rubbish at work so my view might be a little skewed Plus Dell is having some good deals for the holidays, which is always a good thing.

yea i gues they both look good but i like the way the sony looks...i kind of like the blue/purple look and they're thinner.

but i heard gateway is also good because you can upgrade after 2 years or something, but they look a little boring.

nothing beats the look of a powerbook g4. silver titanium shell on the outside and only 1 inch thick closed. and 5.3 pounds w/ the battery. the powerbook g4 is every designer's baby. hehe.

im sorry, but compaq's are not anywhere near as good as ibm's or dells (the only brands worth buying a laptop from imo)... the ibm's speakers are about as good as laptop speakers go, and there IS a reason the compaq costs a hell of lot less... in most cases, inferior parts, but as long as you enjoy it...

my only point is that product "A" is not just as good as product "B". Therefore, product "B" ends up costing more.

thats your opinion... cool, but you speak of "inferior parts".... the compaq uses all name-brand stuff... this isn't an "eMachine" or "Power Computing" unit here... this is a name brand. Granted, my laptop has a Celeron processor, (which wasn't my first choice), but under the given circumstances, it performs great and i haven't had any problems with it considering all the workload its been getting.

I would have rather gotten the AMD one.... (BTW you can get any of the compaq 1700 series with ANY processor - intel IV, AMD athlon, intel celeron, amd duron....) i think the celeron processor was the only area that was sacrificed.

and which IBM are you referring to that has good built-in speakers? I did a lot of research and went to 3 major computer-carriers and looked at laptops and never saw an IBM that had speakers worth a sh!t. (computers are good though).

I LOVE the styling of the mac laptops.... they are gorgeous... just can't do anything with them (all the proggies floatin around, etc...) are all for the pc-compatible. and they are ridiculously expensive.... and STILL freeze (my mom has one).

and gateway laptops are pretty good too... but kinda priced higher than others comparably equipped... but the trade-in plan is cool.

those are my opinions.

yeah macs are a lot more expensive, but for good reason. if you're not in the digital art or e-business fields, you really don't need one. for the price though, they're extremely worth it. the hardware that's contained within is thee best you can find anywhere. compare anything in a mac with a pc and you'll find that the mac has more and is in turn a more powerful machine. a 550mhz G4 laptop is fast than a pentium 4 1 ghz. interesitng eh? the software you mention that's floating around is mainly made up of pc-compatible ones, yes that's true. but but, there is a deeper warez area that has all the mac software you can dream of. i even have maya 3.5, photoshop 7 beta, and illustrator 10 beta to name a few. all the software i have on my mac i have on my pc, but my mac actually has more because it's a more powerful machine. you just gotta look a little harder.

yes, macs are good for video and graphics work, but otherwise useless. I have not found any good in a mac (besides the video/graphics stuff) since the game "escape velocity" came out! hha that was a fun game. anyways, macs are pretty much a work-specific thing and you cannot do a whole lot more.

gateway is also a not-so-good company to buy. They seem to mix and match parts a lot. Granted that there will be some parts that arent totally compatible with others sometimes (ie. DVD and Sound Card, or DVD and GFX card), gateway seems to put these componenet together a lot. People with gateways that I know have a lot of problems.

Id reccoment a sony VAIO as long as you are getting a top-of-the-line system, if not then get a dell. In fact, id advise you to avoid the entire laptop scene altogether. Desktops are way more convienent, totally expandable, more reliable, and not prone to being stolen.

Laptops are kinda a waste in my opinion unless you NEED something to bring around with you. The problem is that there is so much shit packed into that little shell (and theyre getting even smaller) which causes problems in the cooling system and ultimately causes more problems with the hardware itself. That, and tiny keyboards and LCD screens just dont do it for me.

welp, if youve read this far, obviously my opinion counts.
