Sad Sad Trance

I used to be able to find sets, or albums with an over all sad theme to them, but its getting harder.

Does anybody have any specific suggestions, as to artist, sets, or albums with give an over all sad theme?

I find very few sets these days have themes, instead they are just the most popular tracks thrown together.

Timo Mass - Pictures is really dark.. not sad though..

I totally agree with you on the themes thing. I love sad music, I find it to be the most beautiful. At the risk of sounding like a spammer, my mixes are always theme'd to an extent, at least I try for them to be. Embalm is probably my best example of a more meloncholly theme'd set. Maybe they aren't your style, but I hope you check a couple of them out.

As far as other DJs with theme'd type sets, it's really hard to find. I can't think of anything recent that is what your talking about. I think James Holden's recent sets are the best place to look.

James Holden @ Loft Club 09-04-2005 is a particularly good one. Holden at least has a very consistent style that, while is experimental at times, has an overall effect that is very satisfying.

Wow, this is a great idea for a thread, and I'm not at all being sarcastic. Lately I've been listening to a lot of stuff (singles, not sets) that move me to the point of tears... And I've been wondering if anyone else had tracks/sets like this they love...

Tracks in particular that always make me at least a little meloncholly:

Narcotic Thrust - Waiting for You (Instrumental)
Way Out West - Don't Forget Me (Clifton High Mix)
Markus Schulz feat. Departure - Without You Near

and the all time, biggest, sad "trance" (or rather EDM track in general) track for me (And I know, it's new, but I'm in love with it):

Gabriel & Dresden - My Blue Heart

There are a ton more... This music in general just affects me pretty deeply...

Again, good thread M8...

Estuera vs. Re:Locate - Palma Salone
Jonas Steur - Silent Waves
Hydra - Affinity (Thrillseekers Remix)
Solar Stone - Solarcoaster
Transa - Enervate
Above & Beyond - No one on Earth (G&D Remix)
Anything by Echano/Mart
Interstate - I Found You
Moogwai - Viola

Thats just a lil list of trance that makes me think differently than other trance. They seem a little more emotional. This is just my opinion though.

i feel exactly the same about 2 of those tracks you listed... i could listen to viola over and over and never get tired of it. I love AvB's remix as well, 100x better than what he's coming out with lately.

Anyway some more sad songs to add..
Lustral - Broken (i prefer the way out west remix)
Jan Johnston - Flesh (Tilt or Tiesto remix)
Avril Lavigne - I'm With You (Leama & Moor Remix)
Marc Aurel - Running (Dumonde Remix)
Orion - See Me Here <-- i love this track
Evanescence - My Immortal (Michael Feihstel Remix)

Video footage exists of guys (well, technically) crying because they finally received an autograph of Mariah Carey.

Things like this do not surprise me anymore.

Alright guys, I wasn't trying to get all emo in this thread

It's not like I'm sitting here balling everytime I hear certain tracks, I just associate certain tracks with certain memories...

Delerium - Innocente (Tiesto Remix)
Miro - By Your Side (Original Mix)

two of the most saddest and beautiful examples of trance to date!

Can't believe Max Graham featuring Jessica Riddle - I Know You're Gone hasn't been mentioned yet.

You are right, James does hold a theme to most of his sets, and thats why i regard him sooo highly. He does get out there, but deep and dark enough to keep me interested.

I was just feeling down in life, and i needed something that helped me deal with it. Not necessarily get me out of my sad mood, but instead to embrace it.

2002 was a big year for the sad sound, two things i listen to, when im in that mood:

Paul Oakenfold - Essential Mix - LIve at Space, Ibiza(sooo beautiful)
Sasha - 2002 07 24 - Live at La Mania, 3-4 hours of emotional bliss
Tiesto - ISOS 3

thanks for all the input guys, it is much appreciated.

Any more suggestions for Themed sets?

I dont think these are sad, they're just chilled. I still love to hear the full 10 min Original of No One on Earth from start to finish. It's more emotional that way

Hey! 2 great tracks, definately worth mentioning both. "Broken" is a great singalong track, and her voice is fantastic. I really like the Pitch & Sulphur remix.

Orion "See Me Hear": I remember walking in the house with my headphones still in... I sat down in a chair and just cried hearing this, for no reason whatsoever!! Im not a weirdo honest

Just go listen to an Armin or Tiesto set, those are pretty sad.

Sorry, couldn't resist.
