Satan (eek!) How do you get the Shuttle from California to Florida...

Not quite as cool as the Russian one...but still pretty damn neat!

Posted by VERTiG0 on Aug-19-2005 18:13:

I was going to say "in pieces."

Posted by AwakenedAddict on Aug-19-2005 18:19:

Damn.. I should have taken the shuttle to Cali!

Posted by LKD on Aug-19-2005 18:26:

Posted by kabelicious on Aug-19-2005 18:31:

That's the biggest piggyback in the world

i learned about this in elementary school and thought it was the coolest thing. It made me want to go see a shuttle launch. Too bad that when i finally did go see one live it ended up being the Challenger in 1986

That thing is the largest transport plane in the world

Just to remember the old days of competition...

The US Space Shuttle vs the USSR's Buran

Anyone know if he russian shuttle uses thermal tiles
or something more exotic (titanium skin ??)
since Russia can't afford to fly it , maybe NASA should buy it to replace the shuttle LOL

If America hadn't been in such a hurry to beat the Russians in the 60's then the X15 would have been the route into space and whetever that would have evolved into would certainly be better than the shuttle

Russia discontinued the program long time ago but I think they "saved" and "stored" the two shuttles they had somewhre but I don't know anything about where they are or what not.

And they are using tiles as well but from some reports I was reading the tiles are somewhat different...not sure though.

Posted by techead on Aug-19-2005 20:25:

Just found the web site

2 flyable shuttles were built and 7 mockups

1.o1 was destroyed when a hanger collapsed and now only 1.02 remains
apparently it uses tiles , but they are much more robust than the american shuttle

I am not sure what's going on with the Buran but Russia is now showing this vehicle during their Air and Space exhibition in Moscow going on now

Apparantly the price tag to transport the Shuttle from CA to FL is like 50 million dollars one way!!!

Posted by TranceGrooves on Aug-20-2005 00:15:

things that make u go hmmmm

if the shuttle launches from florida then why cant it land in florida? if it can land in cali it shud be able to land in florida as well. why spend 50 million dollars to transport it when a few million cud do the job by building the runway and shits. coming from space its not like florida is a million miles away and traffic is too heavy hmmmm

poor weather in Florida .. if the shuttle gets destroyed it'll prolly cost much more than 50 mil to replace.. not to mention the deathtoll as well

Posted by starsearcher on Aug-20-2005 02:20:

^^ Yep what he said...they were supposed to land in Florida - Kennedy Space Centre - the day before BUT because of bad weather for 2 days they decided to just land it in California - Edward's Airforce Base (I think)

Posted by TranceGrooves on Aug-20-2005 06:18:

ok i am sorry for being the dumbass here but isnt florida on the east coast and cali on the west coast ?? with like 10 air force bases in between and shits. i know there is huge airforce base in shereveport louisiana. why cali ?? why not chicago or houston or dallas or atlanta or any other city close by to florida?

Edwards airforce base is a big stip of nothing in the middle of the desert thats why the alternates are in the middle of nowhere

Originally tapped as the prime shuttle landing site, Edwards Air Force Base is fully equipped with the necessary hardware and support crews to not only safeguard an orbiter after the wheels stop, but also turn it around shipment back to KSC

There are 45 sites around the world prepared for an Emergency landing , but only Edwards is considered the primary alternate

Not to mention the facilities to rehabilitate the astronauts after several weeks in a microgravity environment. The effects of space travel on the human physiology are quite extensive. From the skeletal system to the nervous and cardiovascular system, without proper acclimatisation after their return to Earth, the astronauts would not survive. They cannot travel large distances and have to be quarantined. This also requires special facilities.

Landing sites include (emergency and otherwise) Bangor, Maine, Wilmington, North Carolina, MCAS Cherry Point, North Carolina, NAS Oceana, Wallops Flight Facility, Dover Air Force Base, Atlantic City, New Jersey, Gabreski, New York, Otis ANGB, Pease International, (all USA), Halifax, Stephenville, St John's, Gander and Goose Bay, (all Canada), Lajes, Beja, (both Portugal), Keflavik (Iceland), Shannon International Airport (Ireland), RAF Fairford (UK), Kln Bonn Airport (Germany), Ankara (Turkey), Riyadh (Saudi Arabia), Diego Garcia (British Indian Ocean Territory). Past sites have included Kano, Nigeria, Easter Island (for Vandenberg launches), and Rota, Spain.
