Djs trying to look like they're doing something
Is it just me, or has anyone else noticed that a lot of Djs TRY to make it look like they're DOING something....
no offence, but even from my limited experience, i find that about 30-40% of a song, i'm either standing they're enjoying the music, or trying to find cool special effects to throw in (yes, this is once i've matched the pitch on the cued track, and YES, it's AFTER i've found a point I want to bring the cued track in on).....
I've seen a couple of Djs who just stand there in this period, and feel like they have to look like they're doing something. Like, i see one turning knobs or wateva, but she puts all her effort into it, and tries to make it look cool. interestingly, she's not wearing her headphones, so she isn't adjusting the cued track, and I don't notice ANY differnece in what she was playing....
do u guys know what i'm takling about... for Djs out there, what SHOULD i be doing in the "waiting" period.... assuming i'm in front of a crowd...
crowd interaction
reading the crowd
having a drink
eyeing off honeys

I hate DJs who do that. Or DJs that exaggerate everything they do behind the decks. They'll turn the EQ knobs, but have to get their whole body into it since you know it takes 30 pounds of pressure to turn the little knobs.
Because of the music I play and my mixing style I hardly have time to just stand there, but when I do I like to dance a little maybe wave a record in the air and get into the groove, but pretending to do something to the music is retarded.

haha yeah the filter face

The answer is simple... cue up another tune
I consider it a personal artistic failure if I'm "doing nothing" at any point in a song other than the breakdown.
That's why I'm trying to NOT SUCK at scratching.
well shoot, i just get a drink and relax when im doing house partys.. lol im not gonna pretend to be doing things, well ok i sometimes get a little going and start playing with the mixer, lol.
but really, i just like looking for what i should play next most of the time, i like to take my time finding the perfect track.

When I spin techno, If im not doing something at all, the next mix is going to suck ass.
During a breakdown I try to rise the crowd with a cool Fist Pump
or... Hands in the air
... It works a whole lot better than just looking around.

ive seen it loads. Just watch some of his sets.
Just use 3+ decks and an fx unit and you won't run into this problem.
Or learn to scratch.

i agree i see this a lot. crowd interaction is def a good thing to do at this point... if i'm at a place that has more than 2 tables then I usually end up planning the rest of the set and cueing up other tracks
yeah i like to mix in a lot of stuff... keep it fresh, so i love having 3+ decks...
you know add in a accapella here or there... throw in some Breakbeats durring a break down or something
or mix up like 3-4 tracks at once, but just add snipets from each...
or play with an efx if there is one...
but if iv only got 2 tables and a mixer... i go play with the crowed
lol
Yanno, this situation just happened to us this past weekend.
We went to the Vinyl (Denver CO) to see Gabriel & Dresden. It so happens they didnt even get to play on the main stage... they played upstairs at the SkyBar (bar on the roof of the club).
Anywho, the guy that was spinning on the main floor was doing just that. Standing around, without his headphones going nuts with the EQ. Its only obvious he's not doing anything. The sound didnt change at all and he had quite a few goofy looks while twisting the EQs.
To end the night, G&D were awesome, and the afterparty at my pad went til 9am.

so i change myself.. everytime a cool melody/beat come in i jump around & shout like a retards... sometimes accidentaly kick someone beside me

is it cool? hahaha
cheers m8!
I have my next gig all planned out:
During the breakdown of a really eipc track, I'm gonna whip out my wang (I call him "The Captain") and slap a club ho in the face with it.
I'll be the talk of the town : )

Yeah, well I can't say anything bad about Ferry.
As long as your cued track is cued and matched properly you can do whatever the hell you want. Personally I think it's fun to play with eq's on certain tracks that have dramatic breakdowns and buildups but certainly not for every track. Jump around in the booth/talk w/ nearby dancers, do anything that pleases you. If you exude happiness and confidence in whatever you're doing the crowd will stay happy and energetic too
