YOu know....i gotta say.....each and everyday people in here bitch and moan about America and how it is an evil empire and blah blah blah....but can post nothing about the events going on in Uganda?

If what i have been reading on Uganda is really going on, it makes what the US is doing look normal.

Posted by Lira on Aug-23-2005 13:35:

This has been going on for ages... it's sad that most of the world leaders ignore this. I would even joke about the town's name but...

Oi, oi, oi, don't mix things up.

When what happens in Uganda starts having an affect on their lives then they'll start bitching.

It's true.

Look at the threads in this forum...80% have to do with "EVIL" America...and everyone has an opinion on a country that, although misguided on world affairs, does try to help...yet America gets bashed 6 ways to hell.

Ya you're right...who cares about a few hundred thousand black children...that was an 80's thing.

Posted by Konijn on Aug-23-2005 13:59:

these atrocities occur daily all over the third world (and parts of the second) although modern cannibalism seems to be a uniquely african phenomenon...

the reasons the industrialized west largely ignores the issue are two-fold: one, like one poster mentioned, if the problems don't affect our daily routine, through things like rising gas prices or costs of living, we don't care enough to pay attention; two, getting involved would force many countries (and multi-national companies) to acknowledge their own sordid role in the post-colonial chaos.

It's been happening since c. 1986.

That is so fucked up. And sad.

i love it. I can actually see bush using the same excuse himself. With the stupid grin of his "hey, worse stuff is happening i nthe world, sure were treating those iraqi's like royality compared to it."

Honestly dont see how you can try and excuse american actions because of what is happening in uganda.

anyway the reason no nations are doing anything is because they dont give a toss. Sure theres nothing important in uganda that the west need. So fuck em

i never claimed, implyied or said such a thing...what i MEANT was people here bash and bash and bash America for what it does but say NOTHING of this topic....i am not saying what America does is good...jus that how can people, like yourself, go on and on about how bad America is when this is going on in Uganda and yet say NOTHING about it, have no protests about it?

read the last 2 lines. no one gives a toss. Not the policitian, not the media and not the average joe soap.

what will a protest do?

The same thing that a protest will do against the Iraq war...nothing...but bring the horrid side into light.

Uganda is far different then whats going on in Iraq.....i dont think many people know about it...meaning the regular public...so a protest , or bringing it to light, could push the UN to do something.

Iraq is a "war", for better or for worse....Northern Uganda is the blatant butchering of children....big difference.

Comparing Uganada and America is absolute retardation.

Uganda(and most of Africa) has been in economic and social chaos for generations... America is the richest country in the world. Don't you think America should be setting the EXAMPLE or helping the rest of the world? Instead, you say it's okay to justify America's actions by saying "hey, people in third world countries are more fucked up than we are." hmm

oh man you people claim to be so smart in here...yet not one of you can grasp that that is not what i am saying............

What i am saying is that you people bitch and bitch about America and how many bad things we do...but you dont bitch and bitch about little African children getting butchered to death.....why is that?

And the reason i said that is because no one seemed to care or reply to my original post...but if this post was on how America did "XYZ" then oh shit u would all have a field day attacking america....and dont you fucking lie and deny it.

Why do you think? Maybe because Africa has been neglected for years. Look at the Rwanda genocides... the international community knew what was going on but did not offer any assistance until it was too late.

The point is, the Average Westerner lives a sheltered life, secure in a 9-5 job, a suburban house, and evenings spent watching sitcoms. We've been conditioned to be productive people, and not to worry about what happens in other countries because Uncle Sam is generous and is "solving their problems."

Our interest and concern is basically dictated by TV... if the international spotlight was on Africa, we'd suddenly be in an uproar to help them... just like with the Tsunami. But as soon as the media attention goes away, so does our interest.

OK, so WTF is the UN doing about the situation in Uganda?
Absolutely nothing.

What a great world governing organization the UN is not. And not in the least...

So, should the US step in and install law and order? Dunno. What value does Uganda have as a trading partner or supplier of natural resources to the US? Probably about none.

The US tends to pick its fights in the grand scheme of things if the UN won't act on humanitarian reasons, which is the norm. Think the same scenario is going on in Chad and Sudan as well, BTW.

why don't u give up your privileged sheltered western life by expanding your horizons and to see the true world by moving to some third world cesspool like Africa since you're so concerned about us privileged westerners not worried enough about whats happening in some shithole like africa...oh wait a minute...

in the mean time i'll enjoy my summer leisure time in my nice two story house in quiet suburbia
