Funny.. just got an email from a guy mentioning that we cannot setup a router in our network to talk to their network because We are running Nortell routers while they use Cisco routers...

talk about noobs...

I wanna write up a response.. anyone help me proving this guy wrong?

i believe 2 routers simultaneously broadcasting will pretty much make the whole network go down. I ran a linksys DSL router as a hub on a cisco routed network and the whole network would lock up and go down. I didn't discover this until maybe the 4th or 5th time having the network go down. Now I'm not a MCSE or CCNA but I'm pretty sure if routers are ran in parallel on any network without a bridge, it'll bring the whole network down. If you run routers in series meaning you bridge router to router for more ports etc, then you should be fine. i don't know any network guru's out here?

You are right, but any two routers that dont know about each others existance and start broadcasting stuff (anything not just internet/intranet data) will fuck up usually even if they are from the same company (unless the company has some built in propriatary ability to recognize another router is out their trying to do its job, then they figure out which router to let handle requests or something).

or they could be building linksys stacks in the basement and having a LAN PARTY but cant figure out why their network connectivity isn't working. i use group switches after my router however big the WAN may be. And for a 1 person studio apartment, I'm running 4 machines. amdbox file server, media center shuttle, p4, and a wireless ibook. i also have a line running to my neighbor who's on a g4 and i don't ever have trouble with my line or connectivity.
