Read This! Branching out Genre Wise.

Ive started listening to, buying, and spinning a lot more genres than before and while do understand there needs to be flow and progression in a good set, in fact i really like to build a set etc etc.. have started to experiment with using a lot more genres in my mixes than than sticking to one genre..

ive heard a lot of people saying this is a big no no and hate hearing it in clubs they just think poor programming and a lot of people syaing the opposite, that they like it and enjoy a bit of well mixed and programmed variety

im not talking trance and minimal house here folks, more like multiple genres of house..

bit of semi proggish electro with some minimal ish braks and if were really building or depending on energy, posibly even some lighter electro ish techno towards the ends..

thoughts? feelings?

i think there are too many people that only want one type of music top be played....branching out and droping different types of trance, or house and mixing them in together is something i like to do...and i also like to see others do it...

of course the choice of tunes is very important you can't drop just about anything, but there are people out there that like to experiemnt and move outside of the trance stage and drop somep progressive, maybe some prog house after...and so forward...

one guy that comes to mind is timo...his sets are awesome

being able to do this (once you get better at it) shows roundness and imagination...and for sure it will put everything you know to the test including talent of transitions and selection of songs

thumbs up for the djs that experiment outside of one genre...

ps: nice track lists

As far as im concerned its all music.
I play on emotion and energy- I dont give a crap what genre it is pigenholed as.

Anyone listen to Erick Morillo@space for radio ones 10th yr in ibiza the other week? He dropped Lipps inc 'funky town' smack in the middle of the set- and the crowd were singing along to it when he dropped the fader. It worked so well too! He does the same with love sensation and various other things. Perfect example.

Think outside the box and ignore other peoples narrow mindedness- it may set you apart from the others and give you some sparkle if you do it right.
The way I see it is you can all be like sheep and copy one another, or you can try and push the envelope and do something unique and individual.

All my opinon of course- but each to their own.

i go back and forth with tech house, electro, techno, acid, minimal and breaks almost every other track. mixing genres up is excellent when done right.

of course, if you are an idiot, as some DJs are, who are spinning really funky deep house and jump to schranz out of nowhere, well, it will sound like ass.

but whoever says mixing genres is a no-no needs to wake up.

Me is in a big mismatch of all kids of shit from all kinds of genres from all kinds
of eras.
I key my records to keep songs going together for minutes
so I am starting to feel like a mash up/bastard pop dj.
Acid house ,tech house , midnightees prog trance , deep house ,jungle, tribal techno,
dark prog house ,german minimal house , electroclash,
early rediculous rave music,
vocal radio stuff I used to spin ,
and somedays it is just great fun
In a 8hour set you can swift through all kinds of stuff

but in an hour its not gonna work .
Shit ...to be honest with you I sometimes wish I could stick to a
narrow spesific genre and be more productive.
I like people with the atittude ''this is my style''
''the labels that interest me''
''dj I look up to''
''producers I like''
''Clubs I dream to get a gig at''
The scene I want to be part at ....

People who have it all figured out
and are working towards
making this music ,getting involved with their scene,
wheather that is promoting ,producing ,djing..ect ..
I would advise people
to stick to certain sounds and develop a personal style ,
creative WITHIN a certain style of music ,
fuckin drow the line
and get productive....
altough I could be wrong lets see what other people
have to say
This is a cool thread btw...

Actually, believe it or not, it was shared briefly on TA by Dj Day_V and I took it quickly before it got shut down. The track is bangin'. Massive floorfiller.

I only play tracks that Armin plays.
