I'm heading out to Buenos Aires

The subject says it all. Heading out there on Monday for a days work. And then will be free until Friday (thats when I am coming back to Toronto). I'm excited, never been to South America. Any recommendations on where to go/what to see?

Dammit Fuad I wish I had your job, just for the travelling aspect of things.

I have no specific idea of what you do, but obviously you work your ass off.

Go check out LaBoca. The tourist area is great. But take a reliable cab there. The tourist area itself is decent, its where tango was born, but the surrounding neighbourhood is a bit rough. As long as you tell the cabbie to take you to "la zona tourista de san telmo" you will be fine. Also really nice is Recoleta. Lots of good shopping there as well.

A great mall right downtown is Galeras Pacfico (pacific galleria). Great shopping and really cheap. (well not for argentines but its cheap for us).

***IMPORTANT**** Even if you have the right of way when crossing the street, NEVER assume a car will stop for you. Always look to see who is coming even on cross streets because even when they turn and u are in the intersection they dont stop for pedestrians. This has only ever been an issue for me in Argentina. If you hurry across and watch out for cars u will be fine.

im not sure about clubs during the week. You will definately find some clubs and bars but the big ones have their nights on friday and particularly saturday.

TAKE A JACKET BECAUSE ITS WINTER THERE AND ITS USUALLY PRETTY COLD IN AUGUST. Averages about a high of 10-15 right now. remember that Buenos aires is roughly the same disatance south of the equator as Washington DC is north so they do get winter there.

If you want i will contact a friend of mine who lives there and maybe he will agree to show you around Buenos Aires.

If you have any more questions let me know.

Sweet! Have a great time

Have a great time man. It's an amazingly romantic city! Try to catch a soccer game while ur there.... atmosphere that will put your wildest imagination to the test.

Be careful though man, it's extremly dangerous in certain areas.

P.S. grab a steak there.... it's an experience alone

If you go to a football game, go with a local. It can get quite scary if you dont know whats going on. Trust me. Go with a local and DONT BUY POPULAIRE SEATING.

Definately go for a steak. But i also recommend a milanesa. Have it with a squirt of lemon and a bit of mayo. ITS AMAZING! Its basically breaded veal but made in an Argentine way. Its the most popular dish in the country.

Order it with mashed potatoes (puree) and you are set. The meal shouldnt cost more than 8 pesos 3 or 4 bucks CDN (cheap as hell!)...unless prices have inflated alot in the last year and a half which means maybe you will pay an extra 50 cents.

Def. really nice!

Also had it as Wienerschnitzel in Holland. yummy..

Posted by Jayx1 on Aug-26-2005 21:29:

yeah but schnitzel is greasy and moist compared to how they do it in argentina.

The argentine way is amazing..its all about the seasoning and the cooking method as well as the thickness of the slice. (they do it very thin)

I spoke to my friend Al. He speaks english and is willing to show you around when he's not at work. He told me to give you his mobile.

From argentina its 15-57-17-75-04

yes, people are just that friendly there!

have fun!

Thanks for all your input guys! Jay, I had a question. Can you recommend me a good hotel (its primarily a business trip) in the downtown area? I've looked around on Expedia, I think the Kempinski has some good rates. Suprisingly, the hotels are cheap!

The hotels are really cheap. But ive never actually stayed in a hotel in BA. Every time i have been there i either stayed with friends or rented an apartment when i lived there. Id go for the Best Western which is $37 cdn a night. If it sucks then you can always switch the next night.

And if you think the hotels are cheap you are in for a real shock with everything else. I dont think there is a cheaper place on the planet. You will feel like a millionaire.

so you'd better prepare yourself for a wild time with argentina's girls.
