I think powerbook is much more...well...powerful ...

I think it really depends on what you want to use the machine for. I'm getting the 14-inch iBook G4, but using it only for lectures and when I'm on campus, while my clunker of a machine will be staying at home and housing all my games and music.

You have to see which best suits you for your lifestyle. Are you going to be using it for school? For work? Are you going to be holding a lot of information on it or burning it to CD and making a copy on a stationary PC? etc. etc.

I'd also suggest maybe not buying anything top of the line right now, and if at all possible to wait for a few months.

Apple's recent announcement to switch processors to Intel will mean that you sould be able to get end of life products much cheaper than what they are currently listed at. Just something to think about.

I'm quite happy with my 2.2 pound HP Jornada 820 HPC Pro from 1998.

Best thing ever for lectures. Who the fuck needs a $1500 laptop for typing out notes? No thanks.

Unforunately, not everyone got themselves a laptop back in 1998 :P

My dad's is from earlier than that and it's a sloooooow thing, so it's a waste. If anything, getting a new laptop will last you a good 6 years hopefully... besides, I'm dead tired of my PCs getting viruses all the time and crashing now, so going to a MAC is what I'm doing.

Mine isn't even a laptop

It runs Windows CE 2.11 on an Intel StrongARM RISC CPU, 190MHz. 16MB flash RAM, and a 16MB embedded ROM that stores everything else.

8.2" CSTN passive-matrix screen...

Very impressive. I love old tech that just works

Although for class and notes, depending on what classes you have, some type of tablet might be a better fit, since you can scribble hand writing on it as well.

Personally I bought the Fujitsu P7010D for myself, I really like the size of it (only 10"), made it much more useful for me to actually lug around everywhere. Only 3 pounds vs 5 or 6, but it does make a difference over the long haul.

As for a tablet, I would reccomend the Toshiba m200 series, just because it's the only 12.1" tablet that offers a resolution over 1024x768.

As far as viruses go, well, you do run into that with Windows based stuff, but you have to admit it's a hella lot easier to get software for a Windows based PC, including more choice. There's always good and bad to every issue and this is no different.

If your dead set on a Mac, remember too, if I recall right, that the Powerbooks didn't have great battery life, and although the iBooks fared better, it really doesn't touch the Pentium M series from Intel.
