explain filters to me

ive been mixing for about 3 months on 2 cdj-200's and a pio 300. i hear about filters on mixers. are these an effect or what? ive seen DJ's do that thing where they have 2 hands on the mixer and sometimes they rock back and forth...ive heard people refer to that as a "filter ____". if filters are what make that kind of sound effect, then i definitely want filters. sorry for the n00b question.

Only really high end mixers have filters....the Xone series...i think some of the Eclers. The Pioneer mixers have them but they are worthless. But if you're a "noob" you really shouldn't be worried about what DJs do when they put both hands on the mixer and rock back and forth. Stick to the basics.

There's a BIG difference between the digital filter effects on mixers like the DJM-600 and DNX-1500, and the analog, fully controllable filters on an Allen & Heath.

The best ones are the vermona dj action filter- which was then repackaged as the stanton dj filter( whatever the code is for it).
Severe filtering- with resonance and an LFO.... they are on several BIG djs riders and with good reason.

Indeed. Having manual filters on the DN-X1500 is really useful, seeing that you've kinda got best of both worlds, having both a similar set of effects to the DJM600 and having manual filters like the Xone mixers, but the manual filters on the DN-X1500 are nothing compared with the A&H.

Technically, a filter simply removes all frequencies of the sound either above or below a certain frequency, so cuts out the bass or cuts out the treble. As it is a true roll-off and not just a reduction in the volume, the sound is a lot more dramatic than just using EQ to a similar effect and you also have the ability to change the frequency at which the filter acts, allowing you to do a 'filter sweep' - gradually taking out more and more of the sound until only the very high frequencies remain. The good filters (like the A&H) also have added filter resonance, which is where the cutoff frequency is boosted by a certain amount, which gives a filter sweep a whooshing sound - making it sound extra cool

it can be used as a tool to eq without an eq for a different sound can also be used in transition to overlap two songs so that they are each being filtered differently so as to provide a very unique transition.

Well if it sounded a bit shit then what would the point be?

And remember when you go to a club the amount of time and effort that's put into visuals - be it lighting, graphics on screens or club decor - it can make and break a night almost as much as the music. The number of times I've been to a club which has had wicked music but they've just left the lights on the same pattern for most of the night, people don't specifically notice it but can kill the atmosphere.

So things looking cool are important as well
