Rane 2016

was thinking about gettin myself this mixer although one thing is putting me off.

by lookin at its layout it looks like you can only cue 1 channel at a time in headphones. that would be fine normally as long as I could hear the master in with it but by looking at that switch on the right hand side of it your option is "cued channel" or "master."

am i right? if so how do users cue with it?

Yes the normal 2016 you select your cue channel and thats it. You cant listen to more than one channel in the phones at once. You can switch it to listen to the master in the phones, but NOT at the same time.

However, get hold of a 2016a (later model- but practically identical ), and it has split cue, enabling you to hear both master and cue in the headphones.

Would always make sense to learn how to mix with one source only in your phones, as you may well encounter such mixers in clubs from time to time.

Oh- and get the rane XP cross fader/eq unit with the mixer too as its a million times better.

Very nearly splashed out for one of these myself until I found my vestax rotary. It is a great mixer. You can get them from the states REALLY cheap at the moment too

thnx for clearing that up freak

i'll havta give this method of cueing a try b4 i commit to it. at the min i have a DJM-600 to practice on

edit: one other thing freak - usually when im cueing up a song i use my mixer's split cue function along with the leds to match up the volumes of the tracks. how would one accomplish this on the rane?

Posted by Freak on Aug-30-2005 13:03:

well the way I do it (my vestax rotary only has an led meter for the cued track too) is to flick quickly to the master or the tracks that are playing through the master, make a mental note of the level, then flick back and adjust the cue to the same. Also you get a feel for it over time with your ears automatically knowing whether its too quiet or too loud.
As i normally have my tracks hitting at the same level on the meters, i know what level to cue at anyway- if that makes sense- but its not hard to just click the dial round a notch for a few seconds, check it, then flick it back.

There is a 2016a, a new version which will let you do what u want to do.

Let me start by saying that you have a great choice with the 2016.

Just like you I used to mix in my phones on a DJM-600 and just like you I was worried to get the 2016 because it meant I couldn't. But I took the plunge and was able to learn how to mix with monitors and a single cue in a day or two. It really isn't that hard. Over time you will get better and better at it. When I started I needed the monitor right up at ear level firing directly at me -- now days I can have them in front of me, behind me -- I've even mixed against the house system and no monitors using single cue.

I just bought a second 2016 and I didn't get the 2016a because I was worried I would revert back to mixing in my headphones. It's bad habit in my opinion so it's nice to have a mixer like the 2016 which forces me to mix proper.

I picked up my 2016 MP+XP for $1400 US. Since they are discontinued you can get a great deal. If you get it and need help on a case let me know. I can suggest a couple solutions.

Just get it! Both the 2016 or 2016a are great mixers. I've owned all kinds of mixers, most recently A&H Xone 464 which I still have. I got the 2016a about 6 months ago and love it to death. I have both the mp and xp, but this mixer is so smooth you don't even need the xp. I like the routing on the A&H, but the 2016 is so much better to work with. ROTARY ALL THE WAY!!

i love my allen and heath xone 92r. Would strongly suggest it simply because of the filters on it.
