PSP: is it worth it?

was thinking of getting a PSP; but was wondering if any of ya'll have it and/or think it's worth it.
i was thinking that if there was a final fantasy game on the PSP, or a new grand theft auto (or hell, any old ones), it'd be totally kick ass.
but then again, was thinking that handhelds are more for the kids that travel around in a family on long trips and stuff, not for 20 year old college kids.
thoughts?

I have one and love it. The game releases are kinda slow but then again the system is still new. A new Grand Theft Auto is coming out, called Liberty City Stories, and it will be out before the end of the year. I have a 512MB memory stick for which I use to carry mp3s and movies/videos, but those are optional accesories. The 512MB memory stick is $90 and the PSP USB uplink cable is $15. I personally love my system to death.

yeah iv been looking into selling my PS2 to get a PSP...

but im still stuck on what to do myself

Posted by BiG MiKE on Sep-07-2005 18:16:

I dont think selling your PS2 would be worth the PSP. Just save up money I guess. Everyone will forget the PSP when PS3 comes out

Honestly, most of my games, I never even touch much.

PSP is good if you want Emulators on it. I play some old school SNES and Genisis, even some nintendo more than my actual PSP games. Other than that, I use it as an ipod.

For emulation, you need 1.5 or higher firmware btw. I dunno if these newer psps have it.

Posted by KOzOK on Sep-14-2005 17:25:

Yeah it's worth it if you travel a lot like me. Sitting on a plane for 8hrs aint fun. I got me a 1Gb stick, and i can fit 2 good quality movies on it, or bunch of games.

Yeah if you gonna run, umm "backed up" games, or emulator from your stick DO NOT upgrade from 1.5 firmware! Some ppl are working on downgraders, but it's slow comming.

www.pspupdates.com

and i forgot which snes emu does this, but turning off your snes emu on with the sleep button may corrupt your memory stick.

Thankx for the info, dude!

For anyone who knows a bit about those emulators for PSP: Do you know if any of the emulators (or any of the ROMs for that matter) support 2 player play over WiFi? I know it would take some extra coding, but surely someone has given it a shot?

2 player wireless Smash TV would rock.

They resently released 2.0 of the PSP's firmware, Which adds a web browser to be able to go to webpages on it, As long as you have a wireless router of course.

You mean to tell me that... the old PSP's couldn't go online!? ... damn I didn't know that.

Well yeah, to answer DarkAngel, I just have to be anywhere with wifi wireless internet access. So for example, my apartment has a wireless network that I can connect off of. I can also go online with my PSP at school, Starbucks, Yoshinoya, libraries and internet cafes. I can even leech off of peoples Laptop signals if they're wireless. And yeah, I can pretty much go to any site. The first time I tried it (at school) I went to msn.com and checked out news on that hurricaine that's closing in on Texas. The pics were sooo freaking crisp. But yeah, I've gone there, to gaming websites, tranceaddict, google, etc all on my psp ant it's fucking awsome!

In the end though, as far as the original question is concerned, whether or not it's really worth it, IMO is simply based on your income. If it's gonna be stress for you to buy a psp then you're probably not ready for one. Myself for example, I just got mine 2 days ago but I didn't have to think twice about putting up the funds for it, so for me of course it was worth it. I got an awsome entertainment machine for myself who's library i can update without being stressed out about it. It's particularly great because I have rather long subway trips in between school, work, and home. I make good use of it, which is another factor one should look at when purchasing something like this.

As far as the age factor, at least as far as us guys are concerned, we'll never grow out of our toys, whether it's PSP's, digital cameras, sports cars that talk, plasma tvs and home entertainment system, et cetera... it's all toys in the end. Within a year I'll be in grad school. A psp is no big deal to have in college. Moreover I see far too many working adults in their 30's, and 40's on the train every day with PSP's.

In anycase, this thing does pretty much everything. If you've got a decent amount of money, then it's definately worth getting.

Actually, The old PSP can go online, The thing is, You would need to upgrade it's firmware to get all the newer features, And the one way of doing that would be to download the firmware into the memory stick and installing it on your old PSP, I dont know how it's done since I don't own a PSP.

I love my PSP. I used it for music, pictures, and internet more than anything else lately. Not a ton of good games out for it right now.

Posted by reLLik on Sep-28-2005 19:04:

its not worth it if you are 18+ walking around playing video games, you will look like a fag.

Posted by TigerClaw on Sep-28-2005 21:15:

The version 2.0 of the firmware has been cracked, They just released a downgrader that can downgrade the version 2.0 to version 1.5, So that you can run all that homebrew stuff like emulators and such, You can read about all the PSP Hacks right here.

Yesterday i saw 2 professors at my coledge in a cafe near school playing ridge racer against eachother. Then an assistant professor that i know came by and joined the fun I later said to him WTF and he told me that almost a third of the staff in the school pulls out a PSP between classes

Im so gonna get one. Ill have to spend 2/3 of what i make in a month to get it but ill have one. Im only waiting for Gran Turismo to come out Sure internet basicly anywhere anytime is cool (but i have that on my mobile phone), i can watch vieos and play mp3s (also can do both on my phone, though it does have a smaller screen) but i cant play gran turismo on my mobile

First of all, the term you'd want to use is dork/nerd/geek rather than "fag". If you're going to assume that any gamer over 18 to publicly shows it is a homosexual then you're just ignorant of the times.

And secondly, the era when it was nerdy/geeky/dorky to play video games in public has long gone. There's no reason for you to feel the way you do.

Posted by reLLik on Oct-01-2005 06:12:

im just saying, how cool are you going to feel walking around playing ape escape. when you walk by a girl you will put it down and pretend like you dont have it, unless you enjoy looking like a kid.
