[PSYTRANCE] Axolotyl - Kickflip

Hey TA,

Here is my latest track. My interpretation of the Psy sound ... melodic, uplifting and a bit twisted.

Been a while since my last one. Just been trying to figure out some ideas aswell as learn Live. As a result, this track has been a slog to finish, but pretty glad I stuck with it in the end as I think its an improvement on my last one.

Thanks go to Cybernetica for sharing some cool patches that I've used in the intro (cheers mate!)

Kickflip

Comments appreciated

Hey. I'm not a big listener of psy. Generally I try to rate people against Infected Mushroom (my favorite psy group (Symphonatic yeah!)). Doing that, I can tell this song is headed in a good direction. Watch your EQing though. Specificly around the 3000Hz and 8000Hz+ ranges. Those two ranges are the main source of harshness in songs and theres a bit too much of it in the song for a release. Generally, for a good psy song, I like to hear lots of screaming noises that make you want to yell 'YEAH! MORE OF THAT!'. Psy is by far one of the hardest genres to master because of the need for intricate rythms and religous use of sound effects and I can tell you are pretty damn close to having the style mastered . Keep up the good work!

Cheers,
Zac

Very good job that makes me move and enjoy it a lot

Hey Axo,
commenting as I listen...
that detuned saw in the beginning is wicked, I really like its sound.
The bassline is quite fat and very rolling, I have to say it sounds pro, but I think you could improve it with some very short breaks or stops at some point... maybe through a triggered gate?
The kick sound is good, maybe it could be softened a bit, your decision
Darksword pointed out one thing quite well: You do not have enough drive in your track. There needs to be a certain amount of harshness through upper frequencies. I also think you need more percussive elements in the upper frequencies, or maybe percussive synths adding more drive.
The tune is funky, but not driving, maybe you can give it both abilities.
4:10 is a great change, I love it. It takes me by surprise everytime I hear it. The part is very funky. Very good synth design and arrangement here. IMO the best part of the song.
The lead synth sounds very playful and "freestyle-ish", dunno how to say this, but it works really like a solo instrument... that is absolutely awesome. It's a characteristic of most Trance that the leads sounds quite "looped", most of my tunes do, too. But this lead sounds much more natural and elaborate and fits perfectly. In the end it gets a little more repetitive, though. If you ask me, you should consider some kind of "guitar solo".

Great track, I love its funkiness. You improved a lot in terms of sound and mastering and you can hear it at every point. Improve the issue with the upper frequencies, and you got a dancefloor killer, seriously

Thanks all for feedback. Seems theres a lot of elements in the track people are digging. I wasnt really all that happy with most of it, thought it lacked direction to be honest. Glad people are recieving it well =)

@MegaMan - Thanks mate, glad you like. Didnt think it would be twisted enough for your tastes tho

@Invertika - Cheers Kieran, thanks fo listening mate. Yup kick p0wns over stratosphere thats for sure... (wouldnt be hard.. lol)

@kopi_luwak - Yes, the bassline is lacking somewhat, I'm not happy either. I think the key of the track (A) might be too high for this sort of bouncy bassline and psy is all about the bassline.

@IDarkISwordI - Thanks mate, I didnt know that. Great advice! I'll have a look at this in the final master. The track is definately sounding a bit harsh. Yes, psy is indeed difficult to master... so many technical contradictions like you say.

@EliPsE - Yeah, its was kind of intentional, though more to take the track up a notch. Maybe the mood change is too great, but I'm glad people seem to notice it.

@Sparkunian - Hehe, yeah its always a question when producing... do I drive it a bit harder. Its easy with psy to go nuts. Maybe with the next one, I'll really crank the synths up to 11

@cybernetica - Thanks mate, great feedback. Yeah all my tracks seem to have the same problem. Very funky, but not much drive. I think it has something to do with the question/answer structure of the melody. Going to make a conscious effort with the next one to keep it flowing more. Yeah, pretty happy with the lead, thats the micro Q... lots of automation there

wicked start! and very original. i also am not a psy fan but thought this was really cool. most psy i have heared has been a bit too 'bedroom' trancy for me but this would tear a dancefloor up! that bass is really good and makes the track even more energetic. id love to hear a version that followed the structure of a standard trance track. with a build, an epic break and then a climax.

that would be all id change. cracking stuff.

Thanks rich. Well I intentionally tried to make more of a club psy track, so I'm glad you think it would work on the dancefloor. Would be interesting to hear it remixed as a trance track, I wonder if that would work considering all the wierd fx and sounds? Would probably sound a more progressive then psy I imagine. Anyway thanks for your feedback mate =)

Posted by extalin on Sep-11-2005 10:48:

hehe the song name reminds me of skateboarding as a little kid

it's cool, i don't have much of anything to add or say, but i like it

Posted by dannyc on Sep-11-2005 13:40:

ah yes this is real psy in comparison to my track, i see what you mean now. very creative work man i think is hard to create this kind of atmosphere.

excellent work man kinda missed some sort of break but i guess real psy doesnt use trance breakdowns. good stuff you should send this off

Posted by alexpea on Sep-12-2005 08:06:

I can hear you've tried to make an energic track, and it actually has a lot of potential. Nice melodies and basslines. But the soundquality isn't all that, imo. The kick for example sounds too muted.. Also the bassline...

Being a huge psytrance listener myself and attempting work on my first psytrance track, this is very, very nice Axolotyl! You've really got that psy bassline down. May I ask what you used to create that with? I've been experimenting with several VSTis such as Bassline, VB1, TauPro, and others trying to attain such a sound. Percussion and everything is clean and crisp. Very nice work keep it up! Hopefully my psy track attempt will be half as good as yours when I'm through.

i wouldnt say rmx'd... id say it would be cool if the main weight of it was saved until after a psy break near the middle just so the track would be more mix friendly and intergrateable.

i was pleased to comment on your track

Posted by Axolotyl on Sep-14-2005 04:50:

Thankyou gentelmen for your comment and constructuve critiqe =)

@extalin - Glad you like it dude. Yeah, I used to skate too, but kickflips were about as far as I got..

@Dannyc - A few people have commented on the lack of break so I think I'll work on the structure some more. Full on psy does indeed use pretty huge breaks though (just not long ones)

@alexpea - Hey, thanks for the reply mate. Big fan of your productions actually, so its great to have your feedback! I tend to agree with you re: the bottom end though. Well spotted. In the process of addressing this. God damn basslines are tricky.. lol..

@Magnus - Bassline was created with Synth-1. Very good for creating basslines I've found. Usually requires boost around 200-500 Hz and some multiband compression around 1.2Hkz. Good luck with your track, I'll keep an eye out for it.

@Dj Cola - Keep at it mate and dont be afaraid of criticism. Only way you'll learn.

@richg101 - Like I said to Dannyc, I'll prob end up restructuring the track slightly to give it more of a intro-break-main-break-main-outro progression since everyone has commented on that. Likely extend the strart and end to make it more DJ friendly too.

Anyway, thanks for the feedback guys, much appreciated and very halpfull =)

thanks dude anyways congrats on a really nice track

Posted by thoughtlessjex on Sep-17-2005 14:38:

I think your bass could be a bit thicker. Then again, I'm only listening on my headphones.

I think you need some more percussive sounds. It kind of lacks the drive that percs can give it.

Nice gating.

I really like this melody. It almost sounds like it's in a major key. It's downright happy. Not unlike the Prosper remix of Popcorn.

Nice ending
