Hi,

Does anybody know if Rank 1's new track "Opus 17" is based on a certain piece of classical music?! I hope somebody can tell me. You can listen to the track here: http://www.astralmusic.com//Streams...m=AC032470_1_01

i have absolutely no firm knowledge, but i would suggest not. the chord changes just dont sound classical to me. but i could very easily be wrong

No it's not based on a classical track. The credits on the vinyl say:

Opus means work, so it might just mean "work no.17". The plural form of opus means opera, dunno if it's got anything to do with that. Beethoven has a couple of works called Opus #.

Taken from Wikipedia.com: In music, pieces of music by composers are given opus numbers, which generally run in order of publication. Unpublished compositions often are given WoO numbers (Werke ohne Opus, German for works without opus).

I know what "opus" means, I was just wondering why he named that track "opus 17". What is the "17" referring to? I don't think it's Rank 1's 17th release as I think they released a bit more tracks if you look on there website and count there releases so what does the "17" refer to then?!

Maybe it's just a random number...

It's possible it's their 17th original project (so not including remixes), not sure.

But yeah, 'opus means' "work" as in a piece of music etc, "opera" derives from the same word but I'm sure "Opus 17" wasn't chosen because of the word "opera".

The melody is based on another piece of music i think, because it's the same as Cygnus X - The Orange Theme. My best guess is that both are from a piece of classic music.

Which movement of Tchaikovsky's Opus 17 did they use? I did listen to some audio fragments op Tchaikovsky's Opus 17 at Amazon.com but couldn't find that fragment used by Rank 1.

Could anybody PLEASE post an audio or midi file of the original classical music fragment by Tchaikovsky that Rank 1 used. I would love to hear the original fragment as it is such a beautiful melody! Thanks!

Which is based on the theme music from A Clockwork Orange I believe. After a quick googling, looks like it was written by Wendy Carlos (originally named Walter Carlos, WTF?!). Couldn't find a decent sample though, so I'm not entirely sure if it's what you're after.

i dunno sorry i just know that that amazing russian guy has sumthing called opus 17 in one of his symphonies...

Not a COUPLE. EVERY single piece of music composed and published by Beethoven has an opus number. Same goes to virtually every 18th-19th-some 20th century Western art music (classical) composer.

As it was said, opus # is just the "work number", and they appear in the order of publication.

Beethoven, Brahms, Tchaikovsky, Schumann, Shostakovich....They all had an Opus 17.


Whether Benno was inspired in a classical piece which had the Opus 17 classification I don't know. The theme is a minor key baroque-influenced (18th century classical) piece for sure. It definitely doesn't have anything to do with the Clockwork Orange Theme, simiarities are purely coincidental in style.

It isn't.

But just for the fun fact....Walter/Wendy Carlos is one of the most important transexuals in history.

Hi,

I am always interested to learn more about classical music. You mentioned that it is baroque-influenced. Could you please explain with a bit more detail what you mean by that. It seems it's alot based on harmonies, doesn't that make it more Romantic.

Also, can you recommend me any classical pieces that are in the same style.

Finally, my biggest request!: I was wondering if anybody here is capable and would be so kind to make a midi file of the classical part (the first 1:30) of that composition. Especially towards the end (before the beat kicks in), it becomes too complicated for me. Somebody said it has 4 harmonies, so perhaps use a different track for each harmony. No need to make it trancy, just use a simple string patch for each part. Thanks to anybody who could do this!

'The Orange Theme' uses the main theme from Kubrick's 'A Clockwork Orange', Wendy Carlos was resposible for this version in the film but the Melody she used is by Henry Purcell one of the greatest english composers. The piece it was taken from is his 'Music for the Funeral of Queen Mary'.
