i used to have talking Ren & Stimpy stuffed dolls when i was a kid. to get Ren to talk you had to pull his tail, and to make Stimpy talk you had to pull his hairball out of his mouth.

i think my parents liked that show more than my brother and i did

The best thing about that show was the exaggerated expressions/movements the animators gave to the characters. This is something that is also done in Spongebob (especially with Patrick) which is also why that show makes me laugh.
