UPDATE: Nomen Nescio - All hope Is Gone (Original mix/192kps)

Hey there people,

It has been a while since I posted my last track Bright Light. Have been busy working on other things and enjoying the good weather
But now I am back with a dramatic epic trancer called "All Hope Is Gone". I finally found some inspiration after hearing good tracks here on TA from Romi and I believe Static Blue

I am pretty pleased with the result, but as always I am looking forward to your feedback and suggestions. Compliments are welcome as well

You can hear the track right here:

http://www.soundclick.com/bands/pag...m?bandID=281691

I have used a new simple host/sequencer called Tunafish for the structure of the track, and I found it quite useful if you guys are interested you can visit the following website:

http://www.brambos.com

And no this is no advertising, just giving my fellow trance producers a good suggestion

Looking forward to your reactions on All hope Is Gone.

Cheers,

Nomen nescio

hey mate i'm very glad to hear that some of my works may have inspired you or at least made you want to produce

the track is good, really pleasant listen. The melodies and the theme, simple but following a well structured chord sequence, are very nice !

some of your synths, including your pads around 4:00 may be a bit "dry" for my taste, but maybe i'll be the only one to complain about it

great work

Thanks Staticblue and Marcellos for your comments. Glad you guys like the track

Hi,

I'm honoured that you finally got new inspiration by listening to my track Menno .

Now for the review. Good kick, nice bass, a bit too much reverb on it imo. The open hh is a tad too hard. Nice melody now, simple but very effective (just the way i like em, and the labels too btw ). The break is nice, good pad and melody. I think the transition to the climax is a bit too sudden, work on that some more.

Well, overall a very nice track with good melodies. It could use some more effects and filterwork to make it more interesting. Good to see you're back in business .

Thanks, getting some nice and good feedback. Very nice compliment from you Kopi that even though it is not your kind of trance, you still like the track.

And Romi filtering and toying with fx is next on my learning list

Cheers everyone and keep the feedback coming!

again, the climax is very weak...lacks power and energy.
except for that, good track (cool name ).

Big Ears

Excellent intro, love the bass and the instrument on top of the bassline. Used to great effect!
The hihat DOES seem a tad harsh.
You've got a good arrangement, just doesnt exactly "hook" me like some. (I guess that's what Ronk meant).
This is a tight, clean production. The break was the best part. I liked the saw pad and the new beat was great!
Good work man.

Posted by Nomen Nescio on Sep-11-2005 11:14:

Ronk, Digital Aura thanks for your comments! And I guess it is a matter of taste what hooks and does not hook

I will look into the hi hat. I always love hi hats which are THERE A bit like Tiesto , he also always has one very heavy hi hat in his productions.

Sounds good mate, nice work!

Posted by extalin on Sep-11-2005 11:41:

first of all thank you very very very very much for the heads up on Tunafish!!!!!

It's always a great pleasure to find out about new softwares, i've downloaded the demo already and i'm going to check it out for sure

About the song, it's not my usual taste of trance, but i can appreciate it anyway and i like the orchestrated strings and breakbeat section the most out of the song.

it's cool because i can hear the dramatic sad feel about "all hope is gone" which is something i don't normal hear in trance, so it's good to hear something different

Thanks mate! Glad to hear you really like this. You are one of my most important critics and I value your opinion as a DJ a lot.

These compliments are very nice, when people do not like the style but still like the production

Nice big kick and bass but there's way too much reverb on the bass, makes it muddy below. Open hat sounds a bit raw, try to put a crisp tiny open hat on top, should sound better with that. Gated pad/lead is just great, nice 'dramatic' feel. Break now. The filtered thingy in the break is just a tad too slow, it doesnt really fit imo. Breakbeat is a bit too simple, hehe you dont get away with it that easily Doesnt really suit the track. Melody is ok man. Overall nice work.

Posted by Axolotyl on Sep-12-2005 03:05:

Will comment as I listen

Good strong start, straight into it. Hihats are crisp and full. Bassline is fairly standard for this type of track.
Plenty of harmonics in all the elements.

Sounda at 1.20 starts to repeat feels kinda wrong at first and then when the chord changes come in, its all very beautiful.

2.00 This is feeling very PvD circa '99.

3.00 Not much progression, but everything is feeling extremely well balanced.

3.15 Ahh... the breakdown almost on cue I dont think trance can ever escape this. Not a criticism, more of an observation. Flows into it very nicely though.

3.30 Nice sweeps and sizzling pads. Great fx here if a little typical of this style.

4.46 The break is a bit of a let down. I think you let the cat out of the bag too early with the melody. Going from a breakbeat into a 4/4 pattern is a bit of a jolt too.

This track had a lot of the right ingredients, I just think the arrangement still needs some more work. If I were to give one comment it would be less breakdown... more drive. Dont build it so hard and then maybe it wont feel like it lacks power after the break.

Posted by RickyM on Sep-12-2005 11:34:

Nice track mate, I like the gated synth - but the bass has too much reverb, although i like its sound. Percussion is nice too - sounds very upfront and bright....at the breakdown now - strings are very nice - but you need a big low string there to widen the break up a bit...melody is nice - but im not a fan of the breakbeats ...I like the song when it breaks into the main 4/4 part - but I feel you could do with a louder bassline when it does..but overall nice track.

Posted by Nomen Nescio on Sep-12-2005 13:37:

Thanks Ricky, Jay M and Axo for the nice reviews. I will definately work on the reverb on the bass and lower it. I just hate flat basses but indeed I will listen what difference it makes in the overall sound when I lower the reverb on the bass.

And Jay M, my breakbeat too simple , auwww that hurts I did not really intend to make a real breakbeat but just a little retro beat to go with the strings. And I do realise it is pretty simple

For a start, I personally wouldn't really call this "dramatic", but hey I suppose it's a matter of how you interpret both the word and the music.

Quite a cool track in general, melodies are nice although I don't find them particularly exciting myself. But obviously that's all subjective so I'll move onto commnets on production now

Production-wise the levels are all good and the whole thing sounds "well-packaged", if that is a suitable term... you can hear everything clearly, it sounds quite full etc.

I think what it could do with is more attention to detail on things like the percussion, pads, fx etc. e.g. introducing more one-off hits - I know you've added some sounds occuring once every 4 or 8 bars but I think it would really benefit from some more 'un-classifiable' sounds as part of the groove - I don't think it needs any more rolling ryhthms (well, maybe just one or two with midrange sounds) but things that occur once or twice in a bar which sound more rhythmical than incidental.

Again, with your sound effects you've got (sweep sounds etc), I think the fact that they're so few and far in between they just sound like they've been thrown in for the sake of it instead of being part of the track, in parts at least. Personally I'm not a fan of the quite high thin sweep you've used in a couple of places (occurs at 3:21) - as it's the only sound effect there, it just sounds really weak on it's own... a much thicker sweep sound would work a lot better I feel, or use that over the top of other effects etc with a lot of reverb to kind of merge it in with the other sounds...

I know you've got a lot of cool ideas so I'm really looking forward to hearing your future stuff, but there are certain things I feel you need to work on to make your tracks sound more involved. That's a good word, think it's quite applicable - make it more involved

Just my few cents/pence/centimes/sen worth

Your mark... 5/10

(Scale: 0 = don't bother, 1-3 = needs work, 4-5 = nearly there, 6-8 = releasable, 9-10 = outstanding)

Thanks Stu for your review. I agree up to a certain level that my track could have more depth by adding effects and percussion. It is something that I am becoming more and more aware of with each track I produce. However I do start with melodies because I think a good melodic structure with good bass and kick are the main ingredients for tracks to be played by Dj's. When on a dancefloor I truly do not listen to swooshes or little percussions in the track, I listen to the groove and melody. But that probably differs for everyone.

I am surprised that you are the first one who actually likes my previous track "Mesmerize"(an 8 on your rating system) better than All Hope Is Gone as this new track sounds more mature I.M.O. But that is the lovely thing about music and people: everyone has his/her own taste and preferences

Nevertheless I value your comments a lot and I know I will put in more effort on next tracks.

Cheers!

It's not necessarily that people specifically listen out for the swooshes and every single perc hit etc, but it all builds the feel of a track... paying attention to these things can make your track as a whole sound much more polished and interesting, even if people can't put their finger on exactly why this is.

And yes, everyone has their own opinion and of course my marks aren't entirely consistent

Smoking ..umm..something d(-_-)b

soft and simple, does the job very well

Posted by dannyc on Sep-13-2005 21:30:

simple and straight to the point just the way i like it and as someone else said earlier what labels like too.

i feel you've kinda gone for the airwave sound which i love btw, deep and emotional

i love your melodies in this one, bass lacks drive and power thou think as someone said theres too much reverb on it, should keep it mono. the synths are nice too real easy on the ear, but i think they need more space to breath they'd be hard to hear on a loud club sound system and you want the listener to be able to grasp the melody.

that breakdown was wonderful i loved that gated effect pad, i dont even know how thats done maybe you can help me out? breaks was very simple but i thought it worked, you dont want it to be too complex and take away from the rest of the track.

i think you should stick with this one for a bit longer cause i think it has alot of potential, u just need to learn some filtering, volume fades, transistions,fx and mastering then you'll have a gem on your hands

Posted by krivi on Sep-13-2005 22:28:

i really like this tune, but have some tips for you..i would put one more top melody over the breakdown, try to better EQ sounds, firstly open hihat..and would not use reverb on that bass..equing will make this tune a hit

Posted by Nomen Nescio on Sep-14-2005 12:09:

Darkness, Danny C and Krivi, very much appreciate your comments Especially Danny C I am very happy with your nice review. I have already rendered a new version with less bass on the reverb and I will probably master it one of these days.

Very happy that I get so much positive feedback and reactions. It is always a bit eeeekkieee when you put up a new track (which you yourself like a lot) for reviewing.
