Review: J00f at Republik (sept 11/12, 2005)

I know I don't normally post much here or put myself on roll calls, but i'd thought i'd post a review on an excellent night at the republik.

I actually liked it quite a bit b/c it was sunday night, b/c it meant the club wasn't massively overpacked and i had tons of room to move around without feeling like the place was empty. The bouncers were also very kind and never pushed me around and were very courteous.

I was dissapointed at one point at the night at the "asian" crew that kept pushing me around when i was trying to dance. Some of the girls had no manners at all and kept pushing me or randomly touching me. Now, being myself asian, I found it extra irritating b/c the asian culture involves politeness and courtesy to others. Oh well, can't ask for too much. Actually, it was just a select few that were a bit pushy... The vast majority of them were great and giving lots of space.

Another thing I was a bit dissapointed at was the smoking... Being a non-smoker, I don't mind if people smoke, but just not right in the middle of the dancefloor.. People need to breathe while they dance... My friends smoked too and I was cool with that b/c they actually know not to smoke in the middle of the dancefloor but in the upstairs lounge instead.

Now on to the music... I'm not sure who was in the main room before J00f came on, (I think it was Goldfinger?) but he was doing great with the Tribal Techno stuff, although I thought his transition near the end to a more trancier sound wasn't pulled off as well. J00f started a bit slow, but kept building and building and by halfway through the set, the whole place was pounding and he didn't even give me a chance to rest for about 40 minutes since he was totally controlling my feet. Thankfully, he died down a bit for a while and allowed me to rest for about 10 minutes, but then started up again and ended an awesome set (IMO) some version of Faithless - Insomnia... 2 thumbs up for this man ... I didn't catch the guy afterwards, as I left right after J00f ended at roughly around 4:30. Loved the Trance that he played.

BTW, I think on the dancefloor, I was basically right behind the TranceAddict crew who I think were at the very front, so if you saw some crazy short haired chinese male full of energy with a beige polo shirt inside out going at it the whole night, that was probably me hehe.

Thank you Republik for such a great night!

8/10

w00t.

That was a fun night! J00f played some sick psy and I was loving every second of it...

I left soon after Deko-ze came on - it wasn't easy though - he was dropping New Time New Place... mmmm

Time to sleep.

(Oh ya - Chanoa - you were like a whirlwind on the dancefloor - watch out!)

Heheheheh. Thanks TO ALL OF YOU, Yeah YOU for making my night no my BDay as fun as hell. More of a decent review to come...

P.S.Andrea! Wtf you came out of nowhere! lol

Posted by zoogla on Sep-12-2005 10:09:

LOL!!!!!!!! Andrea---"a whirlwind" "coming out of nowhere"... I say she's a "breath of fresh air"!!!! More on this awesome girl later...

Got there at around 11 to see my man Dennis Hahn spin some CLASSIC TRANCE...I loved every second of it, bro...in fact you were my favorite that night!!!! No joke...

Wow, heard Goldfinger for the first time. He dropped Blank&Jones - Perfect Silence (thanks, Josh, for IDing it for me) which totally blew my mind. He played some SICK, DEEP house music. The whole floor was totally pumping to it.

Then J00F came on and the walls fell apart. Wow, I've never heard trance played like this before. Never knew trance could be in the same sentence as "dark" or "dirty"...WOW The bass was pumping so strong that my back practically gave out. *note to self: no softball tournaments and all-night parties in the same day...especially when they follow two straight late nights of dancing*

I've still got classic trance in my pants (hehehe n00bl4r) so Dennis Hahn is still king!

So Laura and I were gonna leave at about 4:30 when j00f was still playing because she has a 9 am class AND has to drive all the way back to Hamilton (whoa you're hardcore, girl! ) so as we were leaving, out the door and towards the parking lot, ANDREA (chanoa) came RUNNING at us!!!! Wow, I was never so happy to see her smiling face, because I was so drained from the music...btw...I also have some bad stories about a few of the Asians that were there; I've never been pointlessly shoved before and I wasn't too happy about it...hehehe Laura broke it up! ...

...anyway, so Andrea comes up and we tell her, "oh man we're so tired; we're heading home" and she's like, "OH NO YOU DON'T! YOU'RE HEADING BACK IN WITH US!!!" and with that energy and excitement Laura and I head back in and lasted another good HOUR...Andrea you effin' rock!!! Thanks for keeping us going that much longer and making my night THAT much more fun!!!

But eventually, I HAD to leave (even Andrea couldn't hold my spine into place ) so Josh, Laura and I head to McDick's where I had a whole meal and they had nothing (hehehe fatass) and it was really a pleasure hanging with you and chatting.

I love TOTAs...really missed you Nada and Jenn

Posted by nusty on Sep-12-2005 11:02:

just got home now to waterloo from this. deko-ze was awesome for the first hour of his set tonight but then we headed out. Saw most of dennis's set and loved. He even played my two favourite tracks from his purple room set the other night and set my night off to a good start. Goldfinger was good but I found myself constantly wondering where this set was going knowing he was opening up for joof... ended being an ok transition and I agree that the tribal percusive stuff were his better parts on the night.
Joof tore the place a new on dropping some of my favourite psy classics including the astrix track with the heavy gitaring in and the "player" sample in it, the place was going nuts.
A couple of the asians girls aparently didn't notice me in front of them as they ploughed through me... I mean I guess I understand, I'm only 6'2" and 195 and blend in easy into a crowd of asian girls reaching 5'2" with heels.
And then there were a couple that noticed me a bit too much and started grinding my leg! When I walked away the one gave me a pouty face and asked if I liked her dancing. The dancing was fine but the dry humping was where I drew my line tonight.
In general I thought white girls were sleazy to hip hop but apparently give some of the girls from last night a dose of psy trance and it brings out some interesting sights on the dancefloor!
(ie the girl in front of me between two guys, first guy is grinding his crotch into her ass, second guy is in front shaking his head back and forth while the girl rubs her face all over crotch)
...note to self play more psy trance.

The rest of the crowd was awesome and dancing up a storm and I got to hang out with a bunch of great TA's and even meet a couple noobs.

Now for some sleep before class at 10am. (it's now 7... come to think of it, why bother sleeping?)

TRIPLE WOOT!!!

Awesome night at Republik - got there nice and early 10:15 - Dennis played a VERY good opening set - nice and proggy - little vocals - good b-lines. Thanks for playing Perry O'Neil- Myst and Yilman Altanhan - Eighties (REQUEST) among others

Brad Goldfinger - first time hearing this guy spin - pretty good stuff - went up to ID a track he was spinning and ended up sharing a cigarette with the guy - nice track selection - good energy.....

JOHN 00 FLEMING!

WOW!!

His style has changed a fair bit since I first heard his sets back in '98/'99 - miles away from his singles FREE/LOST IN EMOTION on (REACT) pure PSY tinged trance with loads of dark undercurrents. It has been almost 10 years since I first delved into psy-trance (Man With No Name/Juno Reactor/Prana/Astral Projection) from '96-'98 those dark sounds (as well as those of Drum&Bass - METALHEADZ) owned me.

The synthlines tonight - INSANE!!!!!

Mike Schryer - WHERE WERE YOU! - YOU WOULD HAVE LOVED THIS SET!!!!

Oakenfold and Sasha have in the past championed this sound and I have a feeling it may have a resurgance in its cycle. People were losing it hardcore to the beats tonight - John's crowd interaction was superb and the energy in the place was amazing......

TOTA's represent - fast and furious they did play - and we all threw it down in fine form FRONT AND CENTRE.

Tis true when you showed up Andrea (totally unexpected) I was like WTF!!!! WIKKID!!! And you were right in there - busting it out like you had been there all night - slowly getting lifted to the elevation of elation we were all feeling at the SICK sounds being coaxed out of that PIONEER mixer (twisted flanging).....haha you gave us LIFE - THANKS SPITTY!!!!

We had a good group of us there.....Del, Shane, Dave, Andrew, Laura, Fahad, Chris (HAPPY BIRTHDAY), Tyler, Bobby, Josh, Andrea, Hardcore trancer and sis (HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!) Marcusus, Maxtuh
(|3 |_ @ Z 3 |) thanks for the cd bro!!!) plus others......

Hey boy - Hey girl - Superstar DJ - Here we go!!!!

Deko-ze also spun a tight set - HOLY SHIT - LSG/OLIVER LIEB!!!!!!

Michael Babb is such a versatile DJ!! a nice transition from JOOF's hardstyle into his own signature dirty bassline beats - that MURDER WAS THE BASS/TIEFSCHWARZ mashup - Love Bizarre and more.......

My ass is officially PWNED - my legs a wreck - dancing like a MOFO for 5 hours straight - IN YOUR FACE - EVERYBODY IN THE PLACE!

Thank you every one for coming out - tonight was a blast - funny people mentioning the Asian invasions/perversions - I was like "MEH -ya better look/watch out - ROUND EYE is throwing down MAD skillz - destroying the dancefloor - HARDCORE!!"

WOOT WOOT!

9.5/10

Sunday parties rock!!

(somebody had better have ripped that shit - Jenn???? anyone record this set!!!! INSANE!!! LOVED IT!!!:eyespop

Unreal set from everyone last night! John 00 started of a bit to trancy for me, but when the techy sound took over I died (in a good way). For those that left before DekoZe good into his groove, around 4:45-5 he made a very gradual move from hard tech trance to a really REALLY hard tech house and then into hard house by around 5:15. Awesome sets from everyone last night

Posted by Flec on Sep-12-2005 17:02:

and to think i almost didnt go to this party......

IM NEVER GOING TO EVEN THINK ABOUT MISSING HIM AGAIN!!!!

Posted by NuERA on Sep-12-2005 17:18:

I hadn't been to Republik since the last time j00f played a few months ago. When I first walked in I quickly reminded how fucking nice that club is. The extra effort put into the lighting sure was worth while as it adds so much range to the environment. When the night was young the club was bright with an uplifting feel to it, but as the music got darker, so did the lighting. It was amazing how the whole feel of the club can be altered by a few adjustments in the lighting patterns. I also liked the big explosion of light and paper falling from the cieling midway through j00f's set.

Another HUGE difference from the last time was having the dj both setup on the stage! Big props!

J00f was amazing as usual. He warmed it up nicely with some nice dark prog trance and by about the 45 minute mark it was a full on assualt that didn't stop. He played some great tunes, but I was dissapointed that I didn't hear his latest single co-produced with Christopher Lawerence. All in all he sucessfully defended his title as my #1 Dj.

Had a great time for my first trip out to repbulik.

I thought goldfinger started out slow but was picking it up afterwards, and I was really impressed with John 00 Flemming. His style is pretty unique and was definately something different.

Great partying with everyone who was there, I didn't think i was going to go but made a game time decision.

Surprise of the night for sure was Andrea showing up out of nowhere, I was all disoriented and didn't know where the hell she came from.

Fun times!

Thanks for the ride Fahad.

Hope your classes were ok Laura, mine were rough!

it sure helped my mood to be there last night!

Posted by spitty on Sep-12-2005 20:17:

so this was a surprise night for me. i was working (beertub at money nightclub), when i met 5 guys and girls from london. we started talking about the music we actually liked (instead of the hiphop top40 money plays) and i was dismayed to hear that during their stay in TO, they had only gone to crappy clubs. after finishing work we went to go get eats, and on the way..the beats of republik called us, where outside i ran into fahad and laura..so inside we went

i only stayed just a bit over an hr. john 00 fleming ( ) was great. obviously he played a lot harder then my personal preference, but the beat was solid.

yeah..i was all over the place last night. it felt great to be outta highass hooker heels and to be dancing to music i actually liked, and there was soo much room to move around (i think i got revenge on some of those asain girls. i knocked a cpl off the floor )

del...got to watch your fancyfootwork in action. those things have a mind of their own

chris..so good that i could (unknowlingly) make it out for your bday..all the best!!!)

EVERYONE ELSE..fahad, laura, josh, sean, marcus, monish, flec..wikkid partying it up with yall. always a pleasure

I was in there til j00f finished, then a little bit more. So chances are you would've left anyway. j00f played itl 4:30, which was pretty awesome. Didn't see that coming.

I'm really surprised at the amount of asians in there to be honest. Seemed like asian central. The only non asian people were like the TA's and maybe a few pockets of no more than 5 people here and there. It was almost like I was back at home in Sydney. However, it seemed like most of the asians were having fun, as compared to Sydney. Generally back at home, we get a massive asian presence at the big name clubs who're just there to get munted, with no music appreciation, so it was good to see this crowd was (or at least seemed) into it.

Another amusing part of the night. Was probably about halfway through j00f's set, and I was on the right, right next to the bar. There were these two white chicks that were getting hit on left right and centre. Was so funny to watch them look at all the guys and just go "ugh". They barred every single one, and in the end moved off. Josh and I took their dancing space

The first set (Dennis Hahn right?) was damn awesome. Perfect sounds to warm up an evening, and it was definitely getting me worked up. However, I wasn't really getting into the tribal techy stuff that was being played before j00f too much, so that kinda put me out a bit. Although towards the end of the set it got more towards what I was expecting for a j00f warmup.

And then of course j00f. Took him a little bit to progress into it, but once he did it was nutso. I recognised a few tracks that he dropped out of his recent CD's, and of course Hey Boy Hey Girl. I think it was the Killer Buds vs Energetic Rmx (although I'm not 100%. I've heard there's another psy mix of that track), and then the psy mix of Insomnia. Didn't see that one coming. Absolutely awesome seeing him again, and this time actually knowing (and being more into) the style he plays. Last time I saw in was a year or so ago, and I was expecting the style when he first started playing. Not that I didn't enjoy the psy, but I just didn't know what it was back then.

Small qualms with the night:
Bass was up way way way too much all night long. I have nothing against having pounding bass to get people dancing, but when it drowns out the mid and treble, it means you have to concentrate so much harder to actually hear the melodies and enjoy the tracks.
Lighting was pretty awesome, but at times got way too hectic. Even straight it was starting to bug me out.

Massive massive night nonetheless. Had about 20 times more fun at j00f than I did at LoL. Bring him back already

Like OMG ... w0t a fantastic night. From the begining to end it was just perfect, well except for the part where my dumbass forgot to take the extra battery for the camera.

As i entered the club around 10:45ish i saw the decks and stuff set up right in the middle of the stage instead of the regular dj booth setup which is like seprated from the rest of the club, i knew this was going to be a gr8 night and after hearing some sick ch00ns from Mr. Dennis Hann himself there was no doubt in me mind.

As for j00f well, the amount of respect i had for him just went to another degree. After going through a rough with the record label and the boating accident and everything it was just simply amazing to watch him behind the decks and him doing w0t he does best.So Mr j00f i raise me glass to you Sir and cheers for the wonderful night and i can only wish that rest of the djs that share the same popularity as you could be as classful and entertainingg as you are.

Oh yea Goldfinger played Blank & Jones - Perfect Silence w0000000000000t I went nuts on the dance floor lolz. Had a Asian girl come up to me and say ' u r one crazy guy ' lolz

As for Tas well as usual it was a pleasure partying with ALL of you. Great to finally meet you swamper, chiclet, maxtuh and sumone else i cant remember rite now. (sorry)

Now that j00f is in my memory bank forever ... lets get ready for M.I.K.E.

LOL!!! I remember seeing that, Dave!!!! Those two (well, at least the one in white) were COMPLETELY hammered!!! I remember seeing that girl wanting to practically lie down on the floor and she was only being held up by holding out her hand to the other girl!

HOLY SHIT!!!! How could I forget making a comment about this!!! I remember as soon as I saw Dennis in the CENTRE of the stage, I was thinking, "Can't wait to give MASSIVE props to the management for this one!!!" I was SOOOOO happy to see the DJs right there, interacting with everyone...I wish they'd built that metal box right in the centre; as Josh said when I told him he's lucky he's catching this setup at his FIRST time at Republik, "It makes sense this way, how could it be any other way?"...oh GAWD if DuMonde were set up like that....

I thought i saw yo uthere but was not sure....crapppppppppp....

What a great set by John 00. The man kept on going after 4am, i thought he would never stop....This was the first time that a dj has ever mad me tired from dancing...

What a great time last night!
Club wasn;t as full as it had been for the Johan and Dumonde parties but that's ok because there was room to dance which is rare... still lots of people there and of coarse a solid corps of TA's... thanks for making it out early guys!
Really nice to meet some of you guys and great to get re-acquainted with some people I met before as well.

I wish I could have stayed longer for this one to hear John really get into it but I like his deep stuff every bit as much!

Many thanks once again to Republik/TA/TR for the opportunity to play with a world class dj at a world class club

And one more thing... please keep the booth setup in the middle of the stage for Sunday events guys- waaaaaay better!

Very happy to hear that Fleming was his typical self, throwing down a memorable set. Seemed everyone had a great time, even those who aren't big fans of his style.

Hope he comes back fairly soon. I won't be missing him next time.
