Icone - The Clearing / The Touch Of Summer

Hey guys,

here's two lofi clips (64kbps) of my two newest tracks, I hope you like them!

Icone - The Clearing (Original Mix)
Icone - The Touch Of Summer (Original Mix)

The Clearing is a bit of a mix of my 'older' Icone style and the more stabby new one, while The Touch Of Summer is actually a sequel of the purest form of 'The Way Home'.

Let me know what you think

// Wim

Hey Wim,

Makes me happy to listen to some new Icone work.

The clearing has a tad different bassline I'm used to from Icone. Hehe that reverbed tick always does the job. Everything evolves pretty slow in this track.. have to be patient to get through it without skipping parts. Melody is original but I'm not really touched by it like with your other tracks.

Touch of Summer starts nice. Good percwork. I love the vocoded-like shivering effect. Has a summer feel to it indeed. I like this better.

Good luck with the two.
-Jay

The Clearing is awesome, great sounds and a fantastic break. Love the drums, really the style I would play. The touch of summer is nice too but it doesnt really impress me so I also havent much to say about it. Are they signed yet? And so yes, when will they be released? Cause the clearing is really awesome.
Keep it up.

-Peter

Hi Icone,

Listened to both of your new productions. Here is what I think

The Clearing : Love the bassdrive, the build up is solid, the depth in the track is great with all the percussion and fx you use, truly love that. The build up however is a bit monotonous, I was expecting that riff to change tone half way through the build up. The break is nothing special but the lead is powerful and good and once every element comes together it is dancing time.

Overall a good track but nothing extraordinary.

The Touch Of Summer :

This indeed sounds like summer. Nice build up (too bad it is 64 kpbs, would love to hear this in full quality), again a great bassdrive. Percussions are top notch again.
I love that sound at 2.35 haha.

The break is superb, great pads. This is summertime baby. Wow wat a great lead. This is a lovely track. A lot better than the clearing. Only thing which misses a bit is the transition from the break to the lead, the beat comes pretty sudden into the track. I think a lot more energy could develop if the transition is done just a bit better.

Compared to The Clearing this track would get a 7,5 and the Clearing a 6+ And for details and depth in your tracks you earn a 9 !

Cheers mate!!

Thanks for the feedback guys

Contact with the labels I know is going very slow at the moment, so nothing fixed as of yet...

Cheers,

Hi,

Both are nice, but i prefer The Touch... Nice melodies and good structure. I only think you could tweak the leadguitarsound a bit, it sounds a bit too static for me. The Clearing is also a nice one, but the mainmelody does not impress me that much.

Posted by TOR on Sep-17-2005 17:01:

ah good to hear from you again

The Clearing is good.. loving the main melody

but The Touch of Summer is where it's at.. gorgeous pads, beautiful main theme and plenty of power. this one should get signed easily!

Really nice tunes man, both are a bit too generic Trance in my very personal opinion, but they are really good .
Kopi =o.

Thanks for the feedback all, appreciate it! Personal opinions are always welcome

HI wim,

The Clearing - Great intro and percussion work, Backing synth and bass is spot on. Lovely perc synths in the backing, Pads are great and the overall effects are brilliant. Breakdown, The melody is cool, simplistic but effective. Great Stuff

The Touch Of Summer - Again intro, percussion work, bass, effects, backing synths are spot on.... Breakdown, The guitar is great, nice melody, im loving the massive synth that incorperates with the guitar.

Great Stuff, Moved to samples folder >>>, personally i cant get over your George Hales - Autumn remix still

Terry

really great production in both tracks. The thing i like a lot in all your tracks is that there is constantly something moving

The Clearing is definitly the typical icone style I actually prefer the production and sounds you used in this one, but the melody isn't as catchy and memorable as in Touch of Summer.

Both are great tracks, i'm sure you will have no problems getting them signed as usual

Good to hear from you Wim - I was beginning to think that I'd been deserted once and for all! It seems most people who posted here a couple of years ago have since moved onto bigger and better things, leaving poor old me behind. But enough drama - let's get reviewing!

I've nothing to say from a technical standpoint beyond the fact that both tracks sound flawlessly mastered and produced. Though only lo-fi samples, everything sounds bright and driving and I don't think there's anything that I would change or tweak.

I would describe 'The Clearing' as a decent filler track, in that it's not complicated but has enough drive to hold its own. Who said trance always has to be anthemic, anyway? As for 'A Touch of Summer', that was by far my favourite out of the two. In fact, I really like it. Sounds more autumnal to me, though.

Great work, Wim! Long may you continue.

a touch of summer is the stronger:

the only stuff i have heared from you properly was icone 'astra' which i bought on flux if i remember rightly. and this lives up in quality. not quite as catchy but definately a keeper and player. be nice to hear a rmx from arc in the sky of this one...

a great track. really like the melody and bassline. kick is great.

sounds very very nice around the 1;45 mark. infact prefer the buildup to the main part. break is also quite sad sounding and moving.

are these signed?

Cool tracks, but you've really got to use some new sounds All your tracks sounds very similar... That being said, I love your style, but you haven't surprised me musically lately. Btw - I bought your album at Xing Records

Posted by Invertika on Sep-18-2005 13:09:

hey

The production is VERY good as usual from you

I agree with some others in that The Touch of Summer is hard to listen too without wanting to skip forwards just a bit, but when the melody comes in all is made up for

The Clearing is also flawless production, i like the stabs alot. Good melody too, definently a summer feel - which for us in the southern hempisphere is good as summer is just coming in

Good to see more quality coming from you Icone, however i agree that they are very similar to both each other and some previous work.

The Clearing: I like this, love the main riff! Nothing majorly original but solid work. Something I'd go mentle to on a dancefloor for sure. Enjoyable throughout.

The Touch Of Summer: Im not so keen on this. Nothing really does it for me. Not too keen on the melody but its certianly well produced as you would expect from yourself.

Ggood stuff mate, i see no reason why these won't get snapped up by someone!

Exclamation Good stuff

The cleaning- Nicely planned bass set-up. I'm really enjoying the uplifting elements in this song. Mastering is top notch. Now I'm a very big fan of your work, but this track's melody seems to be lacking something in the beginning. The build up was nice, subtle and did a good job as far a building tension. THe one problem I tought plagued the ending was that the melody gets fuzzy and the volumes go down, I understand you could get clipping problems if the volume is too high when you have climatic points in your song, but isn't there a way to raise the volume during the build up? It takes away alot of energy from the song.

Other wise, good job. Nice website by the way, real nice.

The clearing:

typical icone track, same percussion, same sounds and same beat and bassline, excellent melody but nothing that stands out imo. Nothing to pick on production wise but it does sound like you are having difficulties finding/producing new sounds. THis is something im beginning to see more and more with your productions, you should move on with sounds and stuff. Though also keep your uplifting style but try to wrap it up in a new coat.

A touch of summer:

Bassline touch at the end of the ripp reminds me of the sintra bassline. Nice summerfeel, like that but melody doesnt do it for me though again a nice production technical wise, though i do think your synthwork could be a bit fuller.

As stated i think you should venture forward with your new productions, try something different next. I agree with alexpea. We all know you can produce great uplifting tracks but i think its the moment to astonish us with a really kick ass production musically wise. Really retarded to say but: Never be a prisonor of your own style (fuck this sentence, but it does make sense now)

Thanks for all the feedback guys, appreciate it as always!

As to those who want me to change style, I'm sorry but it's not going to work. I like to produce this style as being 'Icone' and I definately won't change. This is not the way it works I think. I will use different guises to perhaps try some prog (don't think this will happen, but anywayz) or change sounds and patterns. I am not really fond of making tons and tons of guises and staying totally unidentifiable in the scene. I hope this is clear once and for all, I'm getting really tired of this by now *sigh*

You're absolutely right Wim
And the Icone trance style rocks everytime. Keep producing under Icone & Van Gelder. Also this "touch of summer" is great. I hope you will find a label soon.

I agree, but to me it seems like you're using a certain preset with sounds - over and over again... There's just not much creativity coming from your tracks anymore, cuz I've heard it all before
