Man dies in gas tragedy
Annabelle McDonald
September 19, 2005
ONE man has died and two other men and a woman are in a serious condition after apparently inhaling laughing gas.
The four friends were found unconscious in a car outside a home in Toongabbie, in Sydney's west, yesterday morning. Police discovered a 1m-long gas cylinder -- believed to contain nitrous oxide, commonly known as laughing gas -- in the Hyundai Excel sedan. The four were aged in their 20s to 30s.
Police said a resident of Union Street, Toongabbie, discovered the four people slumped in the car as he headed out for a walk about 7.45am.
He ran to tell a neighbour. "He came over screaming that the car was full of nitrous oxide," the neighbour told Sydney's Daily Telegraph.
One of the men and the woman suffered heart attacks.
"Ambulance officers found a male and a female patient, both in their 20s, in cardiac arrest. There were also two other male patients who appeared to be drug affected," an ambulance spokeswoman said. "Paramedics were able to restart the heart of the female patient."
Nitrous oxide has become popular at drug parties, as it delivers an instant rush of euphoria. However, hypoxia, a potentially fatal condition in which the body is starved of oxygen, is a common side-effect of inhaling too much.
"We've no idea what led to this situation," a police spokeswoman said.
"It could have been any one of many things," she said. "It is bizarre -- it's not something you come across every day."
The survivors were in a serious condition last night.

Good old Nangs, Poor guy! he probably died laughing..
This similar circumstance happened to some close friends of mine at an outdoor event, bunched into a van and closed the doors they let a little gas out but forgot to turn it off all the way, they were only just saved by a bunch of people wanting in on the little car party.
Very Dangerous!
What knobs. Of course it's dangerous.. it blocks oxygen to the brain.

LOL bulbs are completely safe if done the right way.. I think what happended here is that left the bottle on in the car.. with the windows up and left the bottle on so the 1 ltr bottle kept pouring out the gasses.
Its easier if you just buy bulbs from a supermarket and use one of those old drink dispencers u used to be able to get.
