== Special Announcements - New Compound Format And More Details Inside!! ==

Beginning this week, SURFACE will debut a new event after each one passes.
This new event will be located on the first page of our sticky forum topic where the full calendar can be seen. This should minimize the number of postings while giving all of you something"New" to look forward too after each SURFACE event concludes.

Here is the first event release:
Saturday, 12/10 - DJ DAN
@ The #1 Club in the U.S "Compound"

In addition to that SURFACE will be hosting live mixes every Sunday by our featured artist of the week at www.surfaceatl.com.
This week we are presently hosting Above & Beyonds award winning Essential mix.

Finally, our new DJ format at Compound will be as followed:
We all know how strong our local DJ's are here in Atlanta. With that said, In the event that a headliner is not going to play an extended set Surface residents and locals playing these events will be closing the nights at Compound. Since Compound has an early crowd headliners will be going on around 12am.

For all of you DJ's & producers out there, make sure you join our forum at www.surfaceatl.com and post links to your Demo's.
We have a show coming up at the Mark and we are getting ready to start the voting. We want to support our locals as much as possible!
So if you need help hosting your mix, let me know and I can help you out with that.

These are all efforts that SURFACE is working towards to provide each of you with A New Experience.

We look forward to these upcoming shows and I hope that all of you enjoy Above & Beyond this Friday at Eleven 50!
Remember the instore meet and greet tomorrow at Satellite Records starting at 6:00pm!

Best Regards,
Jonathan Allyn

Thumbs down

2 hour headliner sets I think it's safe to say that when we pay $15-$20, we wanna maximize our time with the headliner, not minimize it... I love local DJs and all as openers and would love to see more of them opening for bigger names, but the only thing that should slow a good headliner down is closing time

Amen brother!!! You speak the truth!

I do respect what you're tryin to do Jon... I know you're trying to elevate local talent to a higher level of visibility, but you gotta remember, that with Atlanta's miserable closing time, we're already getting so little time with the headliners... I mean, NYC & Miami are getting 5, 6 & 7 hour sets, and we're stuck with 2 & 2 1/2 hour sets, so when you get a big time headliner in, that extra 30 minutes and the "possible" encore is like gold to us... Chris Lawrence is a perfect example... he had such a great vibe going and then it was interrupted for the last 45 minutes.... Honestly, these headliners should be going on at like 12 and playing until 3... I mean, you're paying them uber bucks to be there and I think most of them would enjoy playing closer to three hours, rather than 2..... But, this is just my take on the situation...

Posted by Scottaculous on Sep-21-2005 17:53:

It might not even be 2 hours. Notice their wording said "around 12am." My flight time to NYC is longer. Why can't your headliners play longer sets? Is it their choosing and yours?

Posted by TheKidsWantTechno on Sep-21-2005 18:29:

i know, seriously, no offense yall, but what are you thinkin on that one?? compound has plenty of areas to see local djs, why not let the DJs we KNOW youre paying good money to bring, spin 3 hour sets? i mean, why even bring them at all if that's the case, im sure they dont like spinning for just two hours any more than we like seeing them for only two hours

seems like our entrance fees are buying us less and less... all these AWESOME names youre bringing, why not let them spin for as long as they want (even MORE than 3 hours if theyd like to get started early??)

Posted by Surface Atlanta on Sep-21-2005 18:39:

The 2 hour set time depends on the artist. If an artist requests or would like to play from 12 until close we will be more than happy to have them do so. Most artist contracts have them contracted to play 1 1/2 to 2 hour sets. We agree with you guys on the more set time the better, so rest assured if any headlining DJ would like to play longer we will allow them to.

What were stating with local DJ's, is that if there's an artist who's required to play only a 1 1/2 to 2 hr. set that the local artist will close out the final 45-30 min. of the night. With this format, it also allows them to meet and greet all you verus the artist getting off right at the closing time with everyone being rushed out of the club.

So.. If an artist has a 3 hour set time in the contract they will get their full time. If they don't, they will go on around 12 and play their scheduled contracted time and our Surface locals will finsih up the night with what time is left over.

See everyone at Above and Beyond...

Please, provide me with the names of all the artists who want to play 1.5 to 2 hour sets so that I can pay them a personal visit for a good kick up the ass for being so pretentious

Posted by Surface Atlanta on Sep-21-2005 19:00:

Zen,

You would be doing alot of kicking.. lol.. most artist have in their contract 2 hr. set times. There are alot less 1 1/2 hour set times in contracts but, the general set time is 2 hr. I've done well over 400 shows in the past 8 years and that's just the general set time. I agree with you, everyone should play longer with the amount of money that we pay for some DJ's... so get those boots ready.. maybe we can set up a kick section at the Compound.

Hope this all explains a little bit more of our reasoning for doing things.

We appreciate all the support and comments.

Thanks Chad,

I should have been a bit more clear when stating that point. Please let us know if you have any more questions about this.

best,
Jonathan

Oh ya,

I wanted to clarify this one point. With regards to the headliners going on at 12:00 instead of the normal, 1:00.

Compound has an early crowd and for those of you who were at CL can attest to how full the club was by 12:15.

Anyway, the club wants their headliners going on no later than 12:15 so thats why we are faced with the 2-3 situation.

Hope that answers your question...

Best regards,
Jonathan

Ok Jonathan,

First off, thanks for clearing up how things work. I believe that most people thought it was either the promoter or the club who were setting the times.

Here is the question I have for you... I have seen it with my own two eyes, a DJ gets into the set and wants to keep spinning. (The the paticular case that I am thinking the club wanted to close and so they shut off the DJs equipment. SHAME ON YOU 1150) Anyways, Lets say that you have a headliner who goes on at 12:00 and you have a local DJ who is all set to drop it at 2:15 for the last 45 min, If the headliner WANTS to keep playing please tell me that you would let them! Even if that means that the local DJ does not get to see the inside of the booth for the night!

Sure, we are not going to tell the headliner they have to stop. Its up to them. If they want to keep playing then, by all means have fun! I would have backed off to let Christopher keep playing.

You all will get everything out of the night, I promise!!

Best,
JA

Good point. Let them play and then just promise the local DJ he'll get next crack at it again.

P.S. I know Dave Dresden wouldn't approve of 2 hours sets.

Posted by Surface Atlanta on Sep-21-2005 20:46:

BTW - We have a show almost every weekend throughout the rest of the year and even into next. Within these events there will be quite a few extended sets. I am right there with you regarding the 2+ hour sets...

Best,
JA

cool so now instead of a 3 hour guaranteed set. we got a 2 hour and then whatever luck we get. we are clearly moving along!
i was getting tired of those 3 hour sets anyhow. great job

We have had MANY 3 hour sets. The problem is that in the past, people dont generally come out that early. Everyone wants to have it but when you give it to them, where is that crows asking for the extended set.

Like I already stated, if the DJ wants to do an extended set they always have that option. We will never stop that.

I think you forget sometimes that I am not just a promoter. This is my personal contribution to the local scene here. I want to hear the music as much as you do!

No one is trying to cut anyone short. We are working to give you something new to experience and I will never stop with that.

Best,
JA

uhh, hello...they're PROMOTERS!!! Its their job to "sell" this stuff to us. Without them we would have no dj's at all. Does a zero hour long set sound fun to you??? So before you go around being a dick to these guys, i think you need to reevaluate the awesome job all the promoters do for us.

Thanks for all the awesome memories guys!
