My roomate is jabbering on about God's name being (pronunciation) yow-eh or ya-way. What the hell is he talking about?

I doubt if there was a god he would name himself. It may just be the word for God in another language.

in hebrew it's jehova, though we use the j as a y

Nope, it's legitimate. It's the Hebrew word for "THE LORD" (as it appears in English translations) used throughout the Bible:
