"The World" @ 816 Granville - What is down there?

Fellow TA's

So I hear of some trance going on at that world after hours
club on granville [www.816.ca], however, being all new to Van and such
I could use your experianced opinion and knowledge.

If anyone has been down there and/or know what the place
is like or can suggest wheather to go on friday or saturday
that would be great ... thanks.

Posted by pothead on Sep-26-2005 07:57:

hey there~ 816 we ususally call it "gay bar"~ open fri sat and sun nite...but sat nite is "gay nite"
the music there is soso...basically trance and hard dance.

Posted by Plump Funk on Sep-27-2005 01:58:

also called the world, the place seems like going to someones basement party.when i went there they played some dark tribal house it was one of the best tribal nites ever. not being gay i went with girls, but it is a gay club on saturdays and quite extreme too. so if you are going to check it out put in mind that (you've been warned).

Posted by krysx25 on Sep-27-2005 02:12:

Ya I heard the gays love to get naked and grind and play grab ass and stuff like that over there so I feel like letting them enjoy that without my hetero presence.

How about Fridays in there?

Posted by jmix on Sep-27-2005 02:21:

The world can be a fun place... on friday. Its fun to go there with a crew of buddies but be prepared to see some messed up stuff there..... its quite drug heavy, and there are always a few creepers lurking around. Its run well though and no shit goes down there, they seem to have it on lockdown.

Fuck this place... this is basically why none of the smaller trance shows are successful on fridays. Sorry for being negative but this place is almost single handedly responsible for ruining the trance scene in Vancouver. I hate hardhouse and I'm proud to say I've never been there, anyone wanna fire bomb this place with me??

Ahh Danny ... you're one angry dude man, but I hear for the right
reasons. So, here's the problem, other then THIS NIGHT - there is NOTHING!!
So if we fire bomb this joint my only other option
would be listening to shoutcast winamp fucking radio @ home.

I'm new man, can u explain why this place destroyed the trance
scene? got any better options for me? and it's not hard house
but trance and progressive in there (so I been told)...

I've never heard of this place!
I'm quite keen on going to check it out on Friday methinks. See what the venue and music is like.

Haha I was joking about fire bombing the place (or was I )

Last November the World started playing hardhouse and stupid dated hard trance. Basically all of the Asian people who used to come to my clubnight for 3 years started going to this place, the reason being... later closing hours, and earlier opening hours (12am). So without beating the 'Viva dead horse' again, and the fact that Nobody can use Plush on Saturdays anymore, this is where all of them go now. Any of the smaller trance shows or clubnights on Friday are guaranteed to lose 100-150 people and that makes all the diffrence (hence the reason why nobody will bother taking the chance anymore). I remember people leaving from Ben Lost early to go to this shit hole, man did that piss me off. Anyways if hardhouse and shit music sketchfest is your thing, by all means check this place out. I guess the thing that pisses me off the most is that the people involved with this establishment could be bringing in guest DJs, but instead are only cashing in because they know there is no other competition.

So that's as much as I feel like typing out, I'd be more than happy to explain everything in person but as you can tell I'm very biter about things

I hear ya Danny, it's a shitty deal what we got going on here now
and the fact is all that matters to these people is money.

All in all, I look forward to chatting all this out with ya
in person, perhaps @ uranus or other.
But there is hope brother, I'm in talks with some peeps
and I'm sure with the support and strength
of this community we can revive what was lost.

It's called research prior to investment.

My motive is to get something new and original
going. A not-for-profit organization that strictly
focuses on promoting positive vibe and in turn
gathers the community together in love of trance!

I know we're used to commercial establishments
raking in profits from our love to the scence.
But this afterall is a revolution, a new concept
where the community dictates an order.

i don't want to take sides. all i just want to say is you can pout all you want but the only way to change anything is to do something about it. if you do something about it, maybe something will change. if you do nothing about it, nothing will definitely change.

Care to elaborate on this comment?

I'm not sure what you expect anyone can 'do' about the current state of the scene man. Time after time I have to repeat myself about how there isn't a single club/venue in Vancouver that is... A.) available on a Friday or Saturday night... B.) that has suitable equipment and lighting for a respectable level of production. No offence man, but I've been trying to think of a solution to this problem all year! The only option I've come up with (a Friday) is a gamble at best, and you guessed it... will also require a nice chunk of change. Not to mention that I would have to gurantee a turnout of 400+ people. I'd be more than happy to fill anyone in with the details, although it's not something I would like to broadcast over the net. If anyone else can find a club where I can bring an out of town DJ to on a Saturday night, please let me know.

Good night
