even though relatively few people have heard his name listed among those in our fast evolving world of electronica, Lieven was really one of the founding fathers of our American Trance scene. Maybe fr0st knows this already, but he helped give rise to BT when he was an emerging artist.

quote:
EMBRACING THE SUNSHINE

"Thats when the Deep Dish thing started up. Ali and Sharam (Tayebi) wanted to make a record label. We got together and said, Screw it, lets pool our money. We sold my junker car. I paid to do a record and Ali and Sharam paid to start the label, and we did it. I made two records for Deep Dish, The Moment of Truth and Relativity. Then the third track that I did, they were like, we dont get it. There are huge pieces where there are no beats - what will people do on the dance floor? They were really confused by it.

"The other Washington-based label, Music Now (Lieven DeGeyndt and Kurosh Nasseri) was like, we get it, we want to put it out, so I gave it to them. We made a couple hundred copies and one got to a guy named Guy Oldhams in Manchester (England). Guy always finds out cool stuff before anyone else. Sasha (legendary UK trance DJ) rings him up and asks if he has any good stuff, and Guy says, I have one copy of this record, Embracing the Future by BT - its wicked, youre going to love it. He gave it to Sasha, and Sasha was so freaked out by it that he called me.

"Ill never forget this phone call," says BT quietly. "He said to me: The music youre making is important and people over here are going to appreciate it. Im going to send you a plane ticket. I went to England, and got my record deal on that trip."

man i remember those nights when lieven spun, my first days of going to buzz and all i can remember is hearing some really great trance. i also remember being at the very first night of glow (zei club) off 14th st. when lieven spun there, and then every week after that became straight up trance. pete changed from euro house/hi-nrg to trance and all the dj's were trance dj's. i was there for it all man

Yeah, unfortunately I missed it as well. I really wanted to go, too! It's been a few years since I heard Lieven spin.
