Hey Rich,

When I read M.I.K.E Style I get curious because M.I.K.E is one of my favorite producers. To be honest after hearing your track I can not really hear the comparison. Okay your track is also a bit dark but there every influence/comparison ends.

I am wondering one thing. Is this track supposed to be a finished product? It seems you have only focused on melody. Apart from a kick and a light sort of clap and a weak hi hat riff there is hardly anything going on in the track, therefore it misses the drive and energy M.I.K.E certainly always creates. The track is very minimalistic. A lot more percussion and a decent bassline would give this track a lot more drive mate. Just really listen to tracks of Push, a driving bass and solid percussion is always a main ingredient there. also try to get some good kick samples because this kick is not really up to par.

Overall I do think you have created a good atmosphere and some nice sounds are being used but overall this track feels more like ambient trance than a dark M.I.K.E influenced trancer. However if you dig ambient trancy track this is a winner

Good luck with your productions!

Cheers!

Hi,

Ive got to agree pretty much with everything that Nomen Nescio said... If its an ambient track its pretty cool, the melodies are nice and the atmosphere is there. But for a trance track the beat just hasnt got the adequate drive. I thought also that the "booms" were too loud and with little bit too much reverb... the bass sound also could have slightly reverb, now its a bit dry... also the part after 4:18 when the beat comes back in after the calmer part should be more powerful, now it doesnt add anything. Its very very good that you are doing your own thing, thats the most important thing!!
But the production side is also very important, especially in trance.

Keep up the good work!

Best regards, Lakeus

btw check out my track and drop a few comments if you feel like it!!

Sounds good to me, it reminds me of old-skool minimal techno with melodic feel. Really like the pads.

nomen and lakeus:

i understand where you re coming from with the minimalism and lack of drive compaired to m.i.k.e. fair doo's.. i love the guys work so much and have followed his work since '98'. but when i said 'm.i.k.e' style i was refering to the overall atmosphere and breakdown structure.. not in comparisson with 'universal nation' 'fuego caliente' or 'the legacy' but more towards 'someone somewhere' 'dahab' and 'blue midnight' which are more atmosphere based as apposed to driving trancer based.

the kick is something i struggle to get right due to the fact that i dont have access to premade 'perfect' kicks from tr909's. i need to get me some!

i feel that at the moment m.i.k.e is playing stuff like this towards the beginning of his sets(but obviously a lot better tracks) and is stemming away from his 'strange world' style.

i agree with inserting a few more drum sounds to liven it up and will play with the kick. these will probably add to the drive...

desty nova; glad you enjoyed. i think my favourite part about making tracks is putting down layers.

thanx guys

Hi Rich!

I've been mad busy with some things here....
I havnt produced or even kept up with anything for 3 weeks.
...just listened to your new track

In keeping with your usual style, you've got some interesting perccusive sounds in the mix, and I have noticed some more layering in this track.
Paticularly with your synth-string pads. Also, think there's a bassline burried really deep in there...would be nice if it came out .The heart of what could be a remix (hint hint) is the bell-style arp you have going there during the tail-end of the breakdown (introduced early on).

I started a slower song last night, maybe I can take a crack at this and come up with a lil remake...

See you soon...

* listening *

first thing that strikes me is the m.i.k.e influences indeed although his kick is way more powerful.. when u say "m.i.k.e style" you are begging for a comparison, i can easily hear the resemblence, but i think all sounds so thin, its like very little going on.. pherhaps adding more reverb, stereo delat, add more percussions, and generally more layers of sound, u can fatten it up a bit.. and try focusing more on each sound..

keep it up

Posted by thoughtlessjex on Oct-06-2005 21:35:

Wma? Ewwww.

Hmmm. Actually it reminds me a bit of old school trance.

I can't tell, but it sounds like your kick is clipping. Maybe you just have a limiter on it. Either way, it's a bit annoying.

I love that bell-like synth. Very nice sounding.

eau: i cant wait! i think you percussion style is awsome. i cant wait to hear your new track and your rendition of this after hearing your remake of 'orgasm'

if you want i can put some of my samples i made for this track up on my site at 320kbps.. if not then i guess it ll be good to hear how you approach the track.

i look forward to it greatly!

subtle; i guess when saying m.i.k.e style it is being a bit over the top... i am mainly melody driven with my tunes and my perc area always lacks. mainly in the kick being weak. i am gonna add some percs and 'phatten' up the kick.

when i suggest m.i.k.e style it is mainly because this is the producer i feel has influenced me most out of everyone. i know a lot of people love his work and therefore, like you have done, will crit it and give me pointers.. its a great help! cheers mate

thoughtlessjex: glad you liked the wma the kick probably is clipping. im gonna use another one cos it just dont have the low i want. cheers for the comments.

thanx for the kind words jetflag

i just sent it to james holden.. it would be cool if he told me what he thought...

after going on his website its amazing how similar some of the tracks on his label are to this. only they have some wicked drums going on in them...

thanks again!

Like the track, you`re really good at creating atmospheres with your synths.Love the Yahel remix,i was going to do that too but couldn`t be arsed, the lead is so strong in original so i like yours even better because you didn`t even use it.

Posted by Axolotyl on Oct-23-2005 04:35:

Nice track dude, I can see that you've tried to create a MIKE style of sound, but yeah its a tad too minimal to really be compared. Big pad swells are really nice. Percussion needs more attention though as people have already stated. I quite like the minimal feel to a lot of your tracks. Dont loose this, as its quite an original sound to have.

If i were to recommend an addition to the track, it would be a light drifting arpeggio of some sort fading in near the middle/end of the track. Just an idea but could contrast well with the rest of the ambient elements.

I guess ive been living under a rock I only know one m.i.k.e song .. and I cant really hear something that sounds like that.
oh wait I do *lol*
man.. I like that groove in the beginning soo much its really cool
sounds really cool.. got a great atmosphere
no the percs are cool but you could add a nice stabby drum 1/4 before the 8th err note?

i thought this one had been lost miles down the list by now! great to see more replies!:)

luminous: glad you liked my track mate. and also my yahel rmx. i got slated for being a bit too 'artistic' with yahels original melody:) im pleased you enjoyed.

axolotyl: thanks for checking this one. and for your advise. i agree it is a bit minimal to be compaired to mike. i keep trying to combat my minimalism by cramming more layers in but my tunes always get too crowded for my likeing. an arpegio of some sort will probably give the track some more bulk and should take away some of the repetitiveness of the track. ill give it a go when i can stand to touch this track again:) cheers mate!

takkra: if you like this tune you should check 'sunrise at palemos' by mike! its a beauty...

anyways, im happy you enjoyed this one. its one of my favourite tracks ive done. and i agree with your kick suggestion... i know exactly what you mean. that type of beat would work well with the style of this one i think:)

sorry i havnt replied about any of you guys' stuff recently. i havent had a computer where i can download and listen from for a week. ill check em now!

rich:)
