speakers amplifiers mixer

I have a vestax pma270a mixer

I am planning to get PA speakers around 100 to 200 watts. Can i just plug in these PA speakers to my mixer using 1/4 plugs without an amplifier, or do i need an amplifier?

also what is active speakers, and what is passive speakers?

Passive speakers need a separate amplifier, whereas active speakers have an amplifier built in. Passive speakers are definitley the way to go though, the difference in sound quality is very obvious. This means you will need to buy a separate power amp to go with the speakers. My friend picked up a very good second-hand InterM 200 WPC power amp for 180, which works out to about $250 or so.

Are you sure there is a sound quality difference?

between i would like to skip the amplifier. I went down to the music store today and decided to get the powered (active) speakers instead. I havent got it yet, but i was thinking of getting the Yorkville or JBL or Behringer speakers.

Theres a yorkville NX520P active loudspeaker that im looking into. heres the specs:

http://www.yorkville.com/products_m...9&type=10&show=

its going to cost $855 (canadian)per speaker.. (thats 374.90 british pounds)

Is it worth it, or should i look into other brands?

Hmm if those speakers are jost for bedroom / house party use they are a bit of an overkill, really. I can't really see you driving them past 20% of their total power. A set of 2x50w (RMS, NOT peak power) should be more than enough. The active JBLs, Mackies, EVs etc are meant for monitoring in high SPL environments and would be much too powerful for just playing at home. If you are planning to use them as mobile PA active speakers for small parties then you should devinitely get the EV 300sx ... much better than the EON / EON G2 series.

I have JBl's with 50watts of power each. Honestly, i can't turn it very loud with flat (in the middle) bass. The bass gets muffled on high volume.

EV300sx? doe they have a website? i only saw the EV SxA100 ones on the axemusic site.

So do you think the EV 100sxa would be cheaper? and do you know how much?

www.electrovoice.com

I'm not sure about the local prices though, I guess you should just check with the local stores. Buying speakers online would be kind of pointless because of high shipping costs.
